Valeriana officinalis 2 4 Zone 4-7. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, sun. Plants tolerate some light shade, but stems may flop as the amount of shade increases. Tufted, evergreen, perennial sedge with glossy reddish-green or red-brown leaves and dark brown to black flower spikes in summer. Clumping perennial with scented leaves, stems, flowers and roots. Deeply lobed basal foliage from which rise tall, slender, sparsely-leaved stems topped in June-July by highly fragrant, white to pale pink flowers in branched panicles.
