2 Crop Update Apples & Pears Red delicious apples are starting to dwindle down as the storage season ends. Granny smith supplies are abundant. California is expected to start its Bartlett, Bosc, Red pear season towards the end of July. Cauliflower Cauliflower market is about steady with no change on the horizon. We see normal supplies here with average demand. The local deals around the country have started and are helping to flatten demand for California product. Quality is generally reported as excellent. Avocados Supplies from MX are on the decline with their main crop coming to an end. California volume is steady and should be in good supply through July. Quality is good. Markets are on the rise due to the limited volume from MX. Asparagus Mexico volume in increasing with supplies starting in Nothern Baja and continuing from mainland MX. Supplies from Peru are steady. Overall quality is good and markets are on the decline. Broccoli Broccoli market has strengthened and looks to be higher; especially on crowns. Quality is generally good but weather related issues in Mexico have affected supplies. This, along with a generally lighter volume in the Santa Maria and Salinas growing regions, has created the uptick in the market. The approaching weather system moving towards Mexico may further impact supplies but it is too soon to project that with any certainty. Bell Peppers Green bell supplies are currently out of the Bakersfield area with light supplies due to the high heat. Red and Yellow Bell volume is limited as Coachella Bakersfield is slow due to the heat. Market is higher on all colored bells. Qualtiy is good Berries Raspberry supplies are getting better. Expect to see improvements week over week as Salinas and Watsonville areas increase production. Strawberry supplies are fair to good; overall production is down about 35% from initial projections. Santa Maria fruit quality is fair at best due to recent heat which results in less labor hours to be able to harvest. Salinas Valley fruit is good and firm but fruit size is smaller than recent weeks clams averaging Blueberry Central California is now finishing up quickly and will be transitioning to the Pacific Northwest. Light harvest will start this week in Oregon and Washington and will improve moving forward. Information is subject to daily weather and market fluctuations and is meant to be used as a guide.
3 Leaf Lettuce & Iceberg 100% California Product Iceberg Lettuce: Excellent weather conditions for growing, coupled with a lack of current demand has created a surplus of product in the marketplace. This market is softer. Shippers are flexing on volume type orders, and this will continue thru the middle of next week as well. The weights on palletized lettuce has been running at pounds. Overall the quality is above average in both northern and southern California. With no rain or cool weather in the forecast, expect production to continue to exceed demand. Southern California has moderate production numbers and Salinas is much stronger. Citrus Lemons: The Central Valley crop has finished. We will now depend on the Oxnard/Ventura area to get us through summer and early fall. Demand is strong, especially on the medium and smaller sizes of 140s/165s/200s. Demand exceeds supplies on theses sizes. We may see some relief with Chili starting in a couple weeks. Oranges: California Navel crop is almost finished. By mid June packing will be done completely. California Valencia crop is increasing. Valencia s are very nice and peaking on 88s/72s. Small size fruit 113s/138s will be limited through the entire Valencia season. Leaf Lettuce: This market has remained flat as we head into the fourth of July holiday. There were a few shippers expecting the market to get more active at the beginning of the week but this never came to be. Suppliers continue to offer sharp pricing on romaine, green and red leaf throughout this week. There has been some fringe burn reported upon arrivals, but weights and size have been good. As mentioned last week, the loss of school business has hurt the sales of these commodities. Expect steady supplies for the entire week. Potatoes New crop russets are expected to start within the first few weeks of August. Quality is good on all sizes. Colored potatoes have shifted up to the Stockton growing region of California. Good quality and availability are being reported on all colors and sizes. Information is subject to daily weather and market fluctuations and is meant to be used as a guide. Tomatoes California is in full production on gas greens. Market is holding steady. Quality is good. Baja continues on vine ripes and romas. Quality remain good out of Mexico and prices are reasonable. Grape/Cherry tomatoes supplies are in decent supply out of Baja. Markets are steady and quality good. Onions California has good supplies of jumbo and larger sized red and yellow onions. White onions are hit and miss. Good quality is being reported on all varieties. Squash Santa Maria continues with good volume on both zucchini and yellow squash. Markets are steady and quality is good.
