2 Crop Update Apples & Pears Quality has been good Red Delicious apples are in a demand exceeds supply situation, Granny Smiths are in a supply exceeds demand situation keeping the market low. Gala and Fuji apples markets are good with moderate demand. Supplies of Washington storage pears are winding down. Chilean Packam and Bosc pears are coming to an end just in time for the California Bartlett and Red pear season to start up around the beginning of July. Avocados Supplies from MX are on the decline as we approach the end of their normal crop. California volume remains strong and should be in good supply through July. Quality is good. Markets are on the rise due to the limited volume from MX. Asparagus Supplies from California are on the decline as their season finishes. Mexico volume has been extremely limited due to the recent rains in central MX. Supplies from Peru are limited due to colder weather. Overall quality is good and markets are active and high with the overall limited volume available. Broccoli Broccoli market remains steady at current levels. Supplies are consistent but not abundant from all growing regions. The quality has remained really nice with decent crown size, minimal yellowing, or dehydration. Cauliflower Berries Cauliflower both the Salinas Valley and Santa Maria growing regions are reporting steady growth in supplies. This has kept the market very competitive. The quality has been exceptional with vibrant white color, minimal bruising / brown spotting. Blackberries supplies remain limited this week, but increasing gradually. Expect Salinas and Watsonville areas to continue to increase production and reach the first peak by middle of July. Overall quality continues to be good and consistent. Raspberry supplies are getting better. Expect to see improvements week over week as Salinas and Watsonville areas increase production. Strawberry industry turned around rather unexpectedly on Friday where the entire Salinas / Watsonville growing region lowered their harvest estimates by 30-40%. This has left strawberries in an unexpected supply gap. It is a combination of several factors that led to the sudden shift in supply. The holiday pull, decreased volumes, labor shortages and smaller size fruit due to varieties, have all contributed to this short term shortage. Blueberry Central California is now finishing up quickly and will be transitioning to the Pacific Northwest. Light harvest will start this week in Oregon and Washington and will improve moving forward.

3 Bell Peppers Green bell supplies are currently out of the Bakersfield area with supplies steady and increasing. Red and Yellow Bell volume is limited due to high heat in Coachella and growers have not started in Bakersfield on reds/ golds. Market is active on reds/ golds, but lower on greens. Qualtiy is good Citrus Lemons: The Central Valley crop has finished. We will now depend on the Oxnard/Ventura area to get us through summer and early fall. Demand is strong, especially on the medium and smaller sizes of 140s/165s/200s. Demand exceeds supplies on theses sizes. We may see some relief with Chili starting in a couple weeks. Leaf Lettuce & Iceberg 100% California Product Iceberg Lettuce: This market is active with all suppliers. A few shippers started the week sold out. The gap in production of this commodity will continue throughout the week. Look for pricing to be active throughout the week in both northern and southern California. Good overall quality continues with slight mechanical and misshapen heads. Leaf Lettuce: Overall this market is steady. Multiple suppliers continue to seek orders on romaine, and sharp pricing continues to be available. Red and green leaf, as well as butter, is steady as well in the marketplace. The lack of school business has made these commodities readily available. Good supplies on romaine hearts will continue for the week. Potatoes The Russet storage crop is peaking mostly on smaller sizes, causing the market to firm up on the larger counts. Quality has been very good this storage season. California has good supplies of Reds, Golds, and Whites. Supplies will transition from Bakersfield up to Stockton around the beginning of July. Information is subject to daily weather and market fluctuations and is meant to be used as a guide. Oranges: California Navel crop is almost finished. By mid June packing will be done completely. California Valencia crop is increasing. Valencia s are very nice and peaking on 88s/72s. Small size fruit 113s/138s will be limited through the entire Valencia season. Tomatoes Tomato supplies are at the tail end out of mainland Mexico and transition back into California and Baja. California is slated to start production of gas greens mid-june and Baja has already start on the vine rips and roams. Quality remain good out of Mexico and prices are reasonable. Grape/Cherry tomatoes supplies in decent supply out of Baja. Onions Yellow onions are in a supply exceeds demand state, causing a low market on all sizes. Red and White onions have good demand with light supplies. Good quality on all varietals. Squash Baja, Santa Maria, and Fresno have good volume on both zucchini and yellow squash. Markets are slowly coming off and quality is good.
