5 Ivory Halo Dogwood Cornus alba 'Bailhalo' This compact selection of variegated dogwood provides beautiful variegated foliage in summer and attractive red twigs in winter. Its finer textured, fuller, more compact form lends itself to use in smaller planting areas. 6 American Hazelnut Corylus americana Rounded edible nuts 1/2 inch wide and 2 to 4 in a cluster. Useful for the shrub border and in naturalistic settings. Sun or partial shade. 7 Grove Dwarf Burning Bush Euonymus alatus 'Grove Compactus' The wings are more pronounced and the habit is mounded and compact rather than upright. 'Grove Compactus' will tolerate shade, but should be planted in sun for the most dramatic fall color. 8 Meadowlark Forsythia Forsythia 'Meadowlark' In collaboration with the Agricultural Experiment Station of North Dakota, South Dakota and the Arnold Arboretum, this hybrid forsythia was developed for the Northern Plains. A shrub with superior flower-bud hardiness and showy, bright yellow spring flowers, its flower buds are hardy to - 35 F. It will perform best in full sun. 9 White Diamonds Hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata 'HYPMAD I' With a commanding presence in the summer and fall garden, White Diamonds is an exceptional new compact hydrangea with glistening white panicles that are held upright and eventually fade to parchment and pink for dried arrangements. 24 York Elderberry Pots Only 2016 Sambucus canadensis 'York' Perhaps the largest fruit and most productive of any cultivar. Plants are larger and fruit matures later than 'Adams'. Developed by Neal Holland of Sheyenne Gardens in North Dakota, this compact lilac is the result of crosses made between Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' and Syringa microphylla 'Superba'. It exhibits a growth habit and bloom time similar to Dwarf Korean, but with a pleasing, spicy fragrance and incredible wine-red flower buds that open to pink. 26 Dwarf Korean Lilac Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' This tree form has the same fine features of the shrub-form Dwarf Korean. It makes an excellent globe for accent or interest in the landscape. Height: 8 Shape: Globe Zone: 4-7 Spread: 5-6' Foliage: Deep green Common Purple Lilac Syringa vulgaris This old-fashioned lilac is the one most of us remember from our youth. A perfect informal hedge or screen, it has extremely fragrant, purple flowers in May. Color may vary from purple to lilac and occasionally even white. The cut flowers hold up very well, and easily fill a house with their fragrance. Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles. 29 Miss Canada Lilac Syringa 'Miss Canada' The brightest pink of all late flowering lilacs, this vigorous and nonsuckering lilac blooms prolifically in mid-june with single, rose flowers. The foliage is larger than that of other lilacs in this group. This outstanding lilac is extremely hardy. Variegated Norway Maple Acer platanoides 'Variegatum' This Norway selection is an unusual specimen tree that is certain to draw attention. Only sterile flowers are produced in spring, thus no fruit or undesirable messy seedlings. The long lasting fall color gradually turns from red to brilliant reddish purple. A mediumsized shade tree with an oval crown and significant leafhopper resistance. Although adaptable to a wide range of conditions, prefers a slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil. 38 Fall Fiesta Sugar Maple Acer saccharum 'Bailsta' One look is all you'll need to see that Fall Fiesta is superior to the sort. The branching is full and symmetrical. Leathery, glossy, deep green leaves are resistant to leaf tatter and leafhopper damage. A rapid grower, easy to transplant and also resistant to sun scald and frost cracks. Outstanding fall color, shows far more oranges and reds than other sugar maples. Prefers a moist yet well-drained soil with a slight acidity for optimum growth. Matador Maple Acer x freemanii 'Bailston' Discovered in 1997 at our container tree farm by one of our employees, Kevin Johnston. This freemanii cultivar was selected because of its superior habit and fall color. Matador has a deeper red fall color than Autumn Blaze and colors more consistently than Sienna Glen. An adaptable tree with an upright, symmetrical form. Gains its fall color a bit later than other cultivars and holds its leaves longer. Excellent choice for lawn, street or park. 39 Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' This tremendously popular tree offers white blossoms in spring, followed by showy, sweet purplish-black fruit. Heavily branched, the tree has an interesting spreading branch pattern, and attractive light gray bark. The brilliant fall leaves are quite persistent. Own root. River Birch Betula nigra This river bottom native also does well on upland soils. Resistant to bronze birch borer, it has nice yellow fall color, and attractive cinnamon-brown exfoliating bark for an interesting winter effect. Before planting, bareroot river birch trees should be sweated. See page 293 for procedure. Clumps have three or more stems. 40 Paper Birch Betula papyrifera This very hardy birch is the most permanent and desirable of all the white-barked birches. Stems are a beautiful red-brown when immature, a perfect chalk-white when older. Fall color is an outstanding landscape feature. Clumps have three or more stems. Height: 40 Spread: 30' Shape: Loosely pyramidal, rounded at maturity Foliage: Deep green Fall Foliage: Yellow Zone: 2-7 Royal Frost Birch Betula x 'Royal Frost' This birch has the best from both of its parents. From 'Whitespire' it inherited beautiful white bark and resistance to the bronze birch borer. From 'Crimson Frost' comes burgundy-red foliage. The combination of two colors makes this an outstanding specimen tree. Much faster growing than 'Crimson Frost'. Height: Shape: Upright Zone: 4-7 Spread: 15-20' Foliage: Burgundy

41 Shiloh Splash River Birch Betula nigra 'Shiloh Splash' Distinctive variegated foliage, small stature, and slow growth make this river birch an exciting addition for small residential landscapes. Double Flowering Plum - Tree Form Prunus triloba Grown as a tree form, this vigorous large shrub/small tree has been trained to a head forming at 2-3 feet on a single stem. 45 Bur Oak Quercus macrocarpa Native from Nova Scotia to Manitoba and south to Pennsylvania and Texas, this beautiful oak has attractive corky bark especially interesting in winter. A great xeriscape plant, it tolerates a wide range of soil types and air pollutants.
