We have two important estates in this region: the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate and the Quinta de S. Cibrão estate, totalling more than 300 hectares. Forestry 3

6 Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo An 18 th century estate The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate has an approximate area of 120 hectares, extending along the River Douro, on one of its most emblematic stretches. This is one of the oldest estates in the region, dating from Pombaline times, as can be seen from the 1768 Pombaline milestone and the 18th century chapel, which grace the property. 4 Forestry The magnificent vineyards of the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate possess excellent solar orientation and are classified as letter A, accompanying the twists and turns of the River Douro over a distance of 1.5 Km.

25 ALENTEJO The Alentejo is the most extensive and flattest region of Portugal. It is here in this heavenly region that Amorim concentrates its other forest activity centre, namely cork production, cattle raising and hunting tourism. Forestry 23

Cork and Holm Oak Cork and holm oak cultivation is one of the activities carried out on our estates in the Alentejo.

27 The business activity undertaken on these estates favours biodiversity. The cork oak forests are the habitat for 135 plant species and 160 bird species. The Amorim Group s forestry activities are an example of sustainable development and concern for climate change. The Group was one of the first members of BCSD, in Portugal. Cork and Holm Oak Cork and holm oak cultivation is one of the activities carried out on our estates in the Alentejo. Our annual cork production capacity is around 525 tonnes. This cork is sent to our factories for transformation. We reserve 3500 hectares for holm oak, in order to use the acorn, an excellent food source for black pig, one of the region s sources of wealth. These activities have shown themselves to be fundamental for the preservation of dozens of species of animals and plants which would otherwise be in danger of extinction. Forestry 25

29 Cork production The main activity on our Alentejan estates Removing cork from the cork oak does not damage the tree. It is done every 9 years and only from when the tree is years old, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of the forest. Cork production, which is the main activity on our estates, with all its peculiar, traditional processes, is a magnificent example of creating wealth in an environmentally sustainable framework. We maintain constant investment in the maintenance and renewal of the cork oak forests to achieve that goal and to improve estate yields. Forestry 27

The production of pine cones for pine nuts is another of our activities, producing over 20 tonnes of pine nuts annually. The other aspect is the production of wood for industry. Forestry 29

35 Farming and livestock WHEAT, RYE AND BARLEY In addition to cork oak cultivation and cork production, we have set aside part of our land, around 1500 hectares, for dry farming, in particular of lucerne, sorghum, oats and mixtures of pulses and grasses. CATTLE We allocate around 130 hectares for the production of feed for more than 750 head of cattle. This is one of the supplementary activities undertaken on our estates in Alentejo. Forestry 33
