An oenology graduate of the prestigious Adelaide University, Debbie has become a cool climate specialist, having made wine overseas in the cool regions of

10 ROD HOOPER DEBBIE LAURITZ Rod is an accomplished winemaker with over 30 vintages to his name. A graduate of Roseworthy Agricultural College with a Bachelor of Oenology, Rod gained international winemaking experience with vintages in California, France and Germany. Rod is among Australia s most awarded winemakers, at last count he has won 30 trophies, including 51 gold, and more than 350 other medals. An oenology graduate of the prestigious Adelaide University, Debbie has become a cool climate specialist, having made wine overseas in the cool regions of Alsace, France; Marlborough, New Zealand; Niagara, Canada; Sonoma, California, and here in Australia Debbie s winemaking philosophy is let the fruit do the talking, she believes the fruit should be the main focus of all our wines, with oak, yeast and other secondary characteristics supporting and enhancing the total varietal character. 13 ORANGE WINE REGION The Orange region is ideal for grape growing and winemaking due to the combination of geology, soils, climate and temperature. Together these factors combine to produce grapes and wine of distinct flavour and colour.

The Cumulus vineyard provides a range of elevations, terrains, volcanic soils and aspects, which combined with the area s high altitude, intense sunlight and cool climate delivers wines with bright fruit flavours and subtle elegance. STATS Established in hectares One of the largest single vineyards in New South Wales. Traverses both the Orange and Central Ranges wine regions. Extends across a range of elevations from meters above sea level, which adds to the depth and diversity of flavours we produce. It is the only vineyard in the region that has this level of diversity.

15 TERROIR The wines of the Orange region have a unique style as a result of the local climate, soils and topography (terroir). Terroir contributes to the individuality and renown of the wines produced in the region. ELEVATION The Orange region is the highest wine growing region in Australia, extending from 600m to over 1,000m in elevation above sea level. The elevated area is dominated by the extinct volcano of Mt Canobolas, at 1396m. Three separate eruptions over the last million years have formed pockets of limestone, shales, slate, older volcanics and greywacke in the surrounding areas of the Region. There are also coral and shell deposits from ancient shore lines. SOILS Some of the oldest soils in the world have come from local Mt Canobolas, an extinct volcano in the Orange region. Soil depth, water holding capacity, drainage and fertility are closely linked to vine performance and grape quality. The soils at the Vineyard are aged red brown sandy clay loams over clay subsoils (Chromosols) that are derived from old sediments such as shale, limestone, andesite and slates. The most common marine animals of the Permian are the brachiopods, a group of hinged-shelled invertebrates. This combination of influences has led to great diversity in our soils. 17 COOL CLIMATE The weather is significantly influenced by the high elevation and proximity to Mt Canobolas. The Orange region has one of the sunniest cool climate wine regions in Australia, with over 9 hours of bright sunshine every day during the growing season. Cool sunshine is vital to develop high fruit colour and grape flavour. High elevation sunshine also has increased levels of ultraviolet light which can increase the levels of phenolics that build flavour, colour and mouth feel of wine. OUR SUSTAINABILITY Use of multi-row and multifunction equipment which helps reduce soil compaction and diesel use. Maintain inter row ground cover - reduces erosion & soil compaction. Re-use composted grape marc as mulch, spread under the vine. Sheep are brought in to the vines in autumn & winter to keep the grass down, reduce slashing and diesel & soil compaction. 100% drip irrigation. Monitor soil moisture to understand the level and depth in the soil. This controls our irrigation.
