MENU

PROUD HISTORY There has been a public house on the site of The Bowling Green dating back to 1520. The original building was destroyed in a major fire in 1741 that accounted for many of the buildings on Coventry Street. The current Bowling Green pub was rebuilt in 1750 by Thornley s Brewery. It is famous as the starting point for the Lady Godiva annual commemorative procession on Spring Bank Holiday - a tradition that died out in the 1880 s. Francis Drake is reported to have played bowls at the pub in the days when it boasted a bowling green and tennis courts within its grounds. Southam is an old historic town developed on the Welsh Drovers cattle and sheep trail from Wales to the Midlands and London. Originally a Roman settlement dating back to 250-350 AD, named Sowe-ham later recorded as Sucha in the Domesday Book of 1086.
