Friday 29th September 2017 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year 2017-2018 Issue 3 HEAD S MESSAGE I am sure by now you may have surmised that I am a fan of a quotation. I am innately interested in the language choices people make to express what can sometimes be a complex concept. When searching for a new quote on bravery for this week s Sagitta I found the results frequently followed a similar theme that of being brave enough to continue when things are challenging being resilient. Watching children in classrooms, I find myself fascinated by how quickly children resort to asking the teacher for help. Whilst we obviously are delighted that children feel confident enough to ask for help when needed, and that our staff are clearly seen as people safe enough to ask, there is a balance to be struck. Children must also be allowed to struggle with a problem, to make mistakes and to understand that this is a positive, necessary aspect of the learning process. If things are too easy, are they worth doing? At KHPS, a balance of challenge and support is the position we are aiming for. As adults, we use our problem solving skills daily furthermore being resilient can be a key contributory factor to our success. Our children are the adults of tomorrow and I imagine that this particular form of bravery will be even more important then. This week in assembly We learnt about the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur. We thought about how important it is to say sorry and what we should do to try to put things right. Kind regards, Mrs G Bowser Headteacher RIDDLE ME THIS Last week s riddle was: What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries? SOLUTION: A towel Our new riddle is: Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. Nelson Mandela

Anyone who missed out on the meeting but is interested in their child attending should email Miss Sainsbury and she will send out details (sainsburyj@khps.co.uk ). For those who were at the meeting, there was some discussion about the departure and return dates. Although the paperwork states the departure date as Sunday 8 th July at midnight - we will actually be meeting at school on the Saturday night (7 th July) at around 9pm. The return date as marked on the paperwork is correct: Thursday 12 th July (time to be confirmed, but likely around 10pm).

NETBALL FIXTURE RESULTS U10 A Solihull Netball Tournament Tuesday 26 th September Well done to the U10 Netball team for coming 3rd in the Solihull Netball tournament on Tuesday. They played exceptionally well with some very close matches. Well done! Results: KHPS v St Martins 13-0 WIN KHPS v Solihull 0-3 LOSS KHPS v Acocks Green 11-0 WIN KHPS v Bablake 3-6 LOSS KHPS v Ruckleigh 13-1 WIN GIRL S HOCKEY FIXTURE RESULTS The hockey season has started! Despite it being very early in the term for us, we sent our U9 and U11 A & B team players to The Croft this week. These matches had been organised with the intention of giving the girls an opportunity to experience a match early on in the season while they are still learning how the game works. In true KHPS style, the girls gave 100% in all the matches, fought hard for the ball and learnt an awful lot on a short space of time long corners, short corners etc. Particular mention should go to Daisy and Eloise for playing goalie having only tried it once before! Well done to all involved, lots to work on but a very positive start to the season.
