Sunday 26 and Monday 27 - Meet the Producer event: Come along and meet some of the growers, producers and craftspeople who supply Drewton s Farm Shop with their goods. June Judges at the national BPEX Food Service Pork Product of the Year awards in London named our sausage rolls the overall winner of the Pork Bakery Product category for Last month, we were informed that our homemade sausage rolls, pork pies and breakfast mushrooms, which are stuffed with Yorkshire sausage meat and wrapped in bacon, had all achieved a Gold award in the annual contest. The competition attracts thousands of entries from butchers, delis and farm shops across the UK and is run by BPEX (British Pig Executive), a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. Our sausage rolls, which are made in-house by Head Baker Kath Brown using sausage meat from Yorkshire farms prepared by Head Butcher John Lund, were also shortlisted for the top prize. This meant that they were pitted against other Gold award-winning products from all over the country to determine which was the best Pork Bakery Product. Kath Brown and Hellen Dimmock, Delicatessen Manager, recently attended the Awards Lunch at Butcher s Hall in London where the overall winner was announced. Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton s Farm Shop, said: I m thrilled for Kath, John, Hellen and the rest of the team; our sausage rolls and other homemade goods are a real team effort. Kath bakes them fresh every day using sausage meat that John and his team in the Butcher department have prepared, all of which comes from farms here inyorkshire. We were delighted to win three Gold awards for our pork products, but to walk away from the awards ceremony with the very top award was the icing on the cake! The Pork Product of theyear awards are highly regarded in the industry and attract entries from all over the country, so it s a huge honour. UR DIARY... DATES FOR YO Tuesday 4 - Le Tour roadshow: We re delighted to be hosting Welcome To Yorkshire s Le Tour roadshow. Starting at 4pm, this event is open to members of the public and local businesses who would like to find out more about how the region can benefit from The Tour De France, the world s largest annual sporting event, which will be coming to Yorkshire next year. July Sunday 21 - Nature Walk and Photography Workshop for beginners: Working with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Yorkshire Coast Nature, we re. excited to host a nature walk and photography workshop aimed at beginners All participants will be greeted with coffee and bacon sandwiches and a talk by Nigel Puckrin about the stunning Red Kites that have made the Drewton Estate their home. Those taking part in the walk will be guided by our resident Estate Woodland Manager, Seth Crosswaite, and Tony Martin from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on a stroll through the estate, finishing off with a picnic at the Shooting Lodge. 3 HALF-TERM & BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND FUN! We have all kinds of fun for the whole family planned for the Whit week half-term school holidays and the Bank Holiday weekend Scarecrow Festival 2013 SPECIAL EVENTS From Saturday 25 May to Sunday 2 June, we re staging our second Scarecrow Festival, when the entire premises will be decorated with scarecrows made by staff and customers. Once again, there ll be a prize for the best one, so, if you d like to enter, you ll need to drop your scarecrow off in the week leading up to the event (before Saturday 25 May), leaving your name and contact details with a member of staff. The best entries will be selected by customers who visit the Farm Shop during Whit week. Meet the Producer event On Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May, we ll be playing host to a number of the growers, producers and craftspeople who supply Drewton s Farm Shop with their goods. This is a chance to come and meet our suppliers to find out more about how and where the food, drink and gifts on sale in the shop are produced. Among those attending are Lizzie Bakes, a new supplier of delicious gluten-free cakes, quiches, breads and puddings, and Jollyum, makers of dairy-free ice creams. Scarecrow BBQ To coincide with our Scarecrow Festival, we re holding our first ever Scarecrow Ball on Saturday 25 May from 6.30pm. As the event falls in National BBQ Week, it seemed only right that this should take the form of a family BBQ, complete with entertainment and a raffle in aid of local good causes. Fancy dress is a must, (even if it s a token gesture), so get your thinking caps on! The more creative, the better. Tickets for the event, which includes a three-course meal (with a buffet-style BBQ main course) and drinks, are priced at 30 for adults and 15 for older children (aged ten to 16 years). A family ticket (for four two adults and two children) is available for 80. Those who book before 13 May will receive a ten per cent discount, so what are you waiting for? Call or ask in store. New products added to our own-brand range of goods DREWTON S ON THE DREWTON ESTA Our own-brand range of products continues to grow; we ve recently added beers, cakes, sweets, biscuits, paté and pickles to the selection. We also produce our own jams, pickles, preserves, coffee and chocolates. All of our own-brand goods are made using local, seasonal ingredients wherever possible, and produced to our extremely high standards. With their smart Drewton s Farm Shop-branded packaging, these items also make lovely gifts. 4 MEET THE TEAM: BAKERY Regular customers will be familiar with the friendly faces in our in-house Baker department, who bake fresh bread, cakes, pies and other tempting treats on a daily basis. Head Baker, Kath Brown, was recently joined by Carole Clarkson (pictured)to ensure that we can meet the ever-growing demand for our tasty homemade goodies. Kath s skills have earned Drewton s Farm Shop a series of awards, including a Silver medal in the England s Best Steak Pie Award 2011 and, more recently, Gold Awards for our pork pies and sausage rolls, and the title Pork Product of the Year 2013 for our sausage rolls. Kath works closely with colleagues in the Delicatessen and Butcher departments to create these awardwinning products. We re constantly extending and enhancing our range of homemade baked goodies, so watch this space! FRESH PRODUCE IN STORE NOW! Now that spring has finally sprung, the Farm Shop is bursting with luscious Yorkshire produce, from juicy tomatoes grown by Nigel Bartle of Elloughton and fresh strawberries from Nigel May of Ellerker to asparagus grown by Matthew Rawson of Driffield. YORKSHIRE Drewton s in the running for top national tourism award As if winning a string of awards for our pork products wasn t enough, we ve also been shortlisted for a top national award by tourism body Visit England! We ll be flying the flag for Yorkshire in the Taste of England category at the finals of the Visit England Awards for Excellence This means that we have definitely won either Gold, Silver, Bronze or Highly Commended, but the final outcome won t be known until the award ceremony takes place on 20 May at Lancashire County Cricket Club, Old Trafford, Manchester. This latest awards success follows on from Drewton s scooping the Taste of Yorkshire award at Welcome To Yorkshire s 2012 White Rose Awards, and from its proprietor, Katie Taylor, being named Entrepreneur of the Year in the Hull and East Riding Mail s 2012 Business Awards. Wishing the Drewton s Farm Shop team luck for the national finals, Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: Drewton s really are at the top of their game. It was great to see them as winners of the White Rose Awards last year and now to see them going through to the national finals. Welcome to Yorkshire will be there cheering them on. Katie Taylor said: We only celebrated our second Birthday in October, so we re still a relatively new business. I won t deny that it was hard work to get the business up and running, especially in such difficult economic conditions, but we ve come so far since the early days and I have a fantastic, hard working team behind me. During the latter part of 2012 and early part of 2013, we ve had so much to celebrate and it finally feels like all our hard work is paying off. We re always thrilled to be shortlisted for any award, but to be representing Yorkshire in such a high profile, national tourism award scheme is a dream come true. It s a reflection of our commitment to sourcing and championing the finest, local produce, something that has always been important to me and is central to everything that we do at Drewton s Farm Shop.
