1 Newsletter March/April 2016 Homemaker Annual Meeting April 28, 6 p.m. Cooperative Extension Service Wayne County 255 Rolling Hills Blvd. Monticello, KY (606) Fax: (606) This year s Annual Meeting will be held at Ellen McKinley s Barn, located at 2165 W Hwy 92. A guest speaker through the Kentucky Humanities Council will reenact Aunt Molly Jackson, Pistol Packin Woman. The theme of this year s meeting will coincide with our guest speaker and will be Life in a Coal Camp. Each club is responsible for designing their own name tags for a contest, as well as decorating their own table. Ellen will provide red and white checked table cloths. Any item related to coal would be suitable for decorating, such as coal buckets, lanterns, etc. The meal will be pinto beans, cornbread, and all the fixings. The pinto beans, ham, potatoes, drinks, and paper products will be provided. Clubs are responsible for bringing cornbread, corn sticks, or corn muffins (15 members or less - bring one dozen, over 15 members - bring two dozen). Each member will also need to bring a large side dish or dessert such as sauerkraut, greens, relishes, beets, dried apple stack cake, fried pies, cobblers, custard pies, etc. Each club will also need to bring a $15 door prize. If they aren t available that evening, please send someone in their place so that your club will be represented. A light meal will be served. Jemima Boone - April 4, 6:30 p.m. The Kentucky Humanities Council presents Betsy Smith as Jemima Boone, Life on the Frontier. Make plans to attend the program which will be held at the Wayne Theater. The Monticello Woman s Club is sponsoring this event. KEHA State Meeting - April The 2016 Homemaker State Meeting will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, KY. If you haven t attended before, this would be a great opportunity to meet new people and make new memories with homemakers from across the state. 3 The next blood drive will be held on April 19 at the Extension Office from 12-6 p.m. Clubs in charge of working the drive will be Basket Cases from 11:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Cooper from 3-6:15 p.m. Clubs are responsible for providing homemade or deli cookies for donors to eat. Make sure to tell someone about the blood drive so there will be plenty of donors. A special thanks to each of you who volunteer your valuable time to work the drive! Greenhouse Tour - April 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Please make plans to join us and tour several greenhouses in our community. Farmers will give a tour and briefly discuss their greenhouse operation. Vans will be leaving the Extension Office at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. We will return around 3 p.m. Senior Citizen Vouchers for Farmers Market Wayne County has recently been accepted to participate in a voucher program for senior citizens. Seniors over the age of 60 that are on a limited income will qualify for the program. To apply, contact the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency. Applications will be accepted started in May. Vouchers can be used at the Farmers Market starting June 1. Wayne County EXPO Check in Viewing Pick up July 5-8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 6 & 7-8 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 8-8 a.m. to 12 noon We look forward to seeing quality items entered in the EXPO this year! 4 March is National Nutrition Month Breakfast Made Easy for Everybody- Keep quick and easy food on hand: Cereal, Milk, Crackers and peanut butter, Fruit or juice, Cheese, Breakfast bars, Bagels, Hard-boiled eggs. Children who eat breakfast: Perform better in school, have fewer accidents, stay healthier than children who do not eat breakfast. Adults who eat breakfast: Have more energy, concentrate better, avoid feeling tired, irritable, and hungry, control their weight better, have lower risk of developing heart disease. Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie Ingredients: 1/2 cup fat-free milk 1 container (6 ounces) low-fat vanilla yogurt 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender in order listed. Cover. Blend on high speed until smooth Serve immediately. Smoothies are easy to prepare and are very popular. These delicious drinks can give us a boost throughout the day. Try different fruits for different tastes. Take advantage of lower prices of fruit when in season. If you can t eat all the fruit before it becomes to ripe, consider freezing it in 1 cup quantities to use in future recipes. Serve cold. Garnish with raisins if desired. Make it a meal by adding fresh greens, carrot sticks, whole grain crackers, and low fat milk. Nutrition facts per serving: 130 calories; 2g total fat; 0.5g saturated fat; 0g trans-fat; 40mg cholesterol; 45mg sodium; 14g carbohydrates; 2g fiber; 15g protein; 2 % Daily Value of vitamin; 10% Daily Value of vitamin C; 4% Daily of calcium; 4% Daily Value of iron.
