10 By RYAN MYERS STAFF WRITER 2017 Restaurant Guide tcu360.com COMMUNITY 8 burger joints to try in Fort Worth In a testament to Fort Worth s burger scene, the first restaurant recommended to me was West 7th staple Rodeo Goat. Magazine Conde Nast Traveler agrees, calling Fort Worth a top 15 burger city in America. Fort Worth has a mix of high profile venues and some may have never heard of or considered. Here are eight places to visit if you are craving a burger. ALL PHOTOS BY RYAN MYERS Rodeo Goat RODEO GOAT As mentioned Hopdoddy Burger Bar above, this was the first restaurant recommended to me in Fort Worth. Rodeo Goat has been serving creative combinations since it opened in My personal favorite, the chaca oaxaca, features a beef and chorizo patty, pico, queso fresco, avocado, tabasco mayo, and a fried egg. Other burgers include the sugar burger, which features candied bacon and grilled peaches, and the terlingua, basically a Frito pie between two buns. For the vegetarians out there, Rodeo Goat has two vegetarian burgers and will change any patty on request. The restaurant also holds a battle of the burger against two limited-run burgers. This round s contenders are the padre and the chupacabra. Of all the eight places I visited, Rodeo Goat had the best fries. They keep it simple, but the fries have a satisfying crunch and a soft inside, a perfect combo for any fry. Also, be sure to get some dessert. The Restaurant Guide

11 shakes can be hit or miss, but the goat balls are a must. HOPDODDY BURGER BAR The newest addition to Fort Worth s burger scene, this Austinbased restaurant opened in August. It s the fourth location in DFW, joining the two Dallas and Addison locations. Hopdoddy s arrival came with a lot of hype, and deservedly so. I went for the first time for this story, and I walked away impressed and full. I ordered the llano poblano, a beef burger topped with pepper jack, bacon, seared poblano peppers, chipotle mayo, and lettuce on a wheat bun. The burger was excellent, and I fell in love with the wheat bun. It was toasted well and still warm from the oven. The most interesting burger on the menu is the impossible. It s a vegetarian burger that actually bleeds. For my fries, I ordered the parmesan truffle fries. The seasoning was great, but the fries disappointed. I found them to have the texture of cardboard, much like those at In-N-Out. The only dessert offered here are shakes, and they are amazing. I ordered a chocolate shake. My only complaint was that it wasn t strawberry. FRED S TEXAS CAFE If you want to watch the game or listen to some live country music, Fred s is the place for you. Burgers are the name of the game, but Fred s also serves other Texas favorites like tacos, quesadillas, and chicken fried steak. I ordered the classic Fredburger with bacon and cheese. I ve always found the bun a little dry, and the toppings are thrown on without much care unless you get a specialty burger, but the flavor is always there. As for the specialty burgers, try the diablo or serrano burger if you really want to turn up the heat. The fries are quite good and can be loaded with cheese and bacon for a filling bar appetizer. No desserts here, but you may not want one if you eat too much. Dutch s DUTCH S A TCU favorite, Dutch s has been serving burgers since 2007 and is currently expanding into the building next door. The burgers are the star here, and there is a number to choose from, from the original dutch to my favorites, the vaquero burger, which features fried onion and jalapeno strings, and the bacon bleu cheese. The one thing all of these burgers share is the wonderful bun. It s slightly sweet and buttery and always well toasted. Be sure to look at the other menu options as well. 12 bar food is quite good, and Dutch s serves a couple of mean melts. My personal favorite item on the menu is the steak finger basket. The gravy is divine and goes well with the fries. Speaking of fries, they are very good and always come in a heaping pile. Be sure to check out the tater tots. The shakes have always been a little thick, but they are flavorful and have strawberry, so there s not much else I can ask for. Swiss Pastry Shop SWISS PASTRY SHOP Known for its black forest cake and breakfast, the Swiss Pastry Shop has recently added burgers to their arsenal. Rather than using normal beef, they use Texas Akaushi beef, a form of Japanese beef known for its tenderness. This makes the burgers a little different from the rest. The burgers are creative but don t get too wild. I ordered the green chile bacon burger, and the chilies added a nice hit of heat without being overpowering. The bun is also great. It s a sesame bun that is light and buttery and holds firm, even with all of the juices from the meat and cheese. There are no fries to be found here, but I d recommend the potato salad or the sauerkraut. For dessert, you have a whole bakery to choose from. In fact, it s the first thing you see when walking in. They have a number of pies and cakes to select from, as well as pastries and bread. They are only open for lunch Tuesday- Saturday from 11:00-3:30, so be sure to remember this when trying to go. Kincaid s Hamburgers KINCAID S HAMBURGERS In business since 1946, this iconic Fort Worth burger joint sits in a long-abandoned grocery store that decided to make burgers and has yet to stop. Kincaid s now has six locations, but the original still serves up fresh burgers on Camp Bowie. In a testament to its heritage, every order comes to-go with the order markings in sharpie on the outside. Most of the burgers are pretty simple, and the wildest they get is putting pimento cheese or an onion ring on top. I ordered a junior cowtown, a burger with grilled onions and jalapenos. You may laugh at the size, but this burger was plenty large. The fries come crinkle cut and go Restaurant Guide

13 well dipped in their shakes. The shakes are exquisite and stay creamy from the first to last sip. I would also recommend the banana pudding. It is thick and creamy and full of banana chunks. Good Food Co GOOD FOOD CO A little out of the way from the TCU area, this Race Street diner is serving up good food at better prices. There s nothing fancy here. Each burger is a homage to the past when things were simple and you could pronounce the toppings. The bacon cheeseburger ($6) was very good. The patty was well seasoned, and the vegetables were fresh and crisp. They also toasted both sides of the bun, which was interesting but enjoyable. Be warned, if you want to eat here keep, in mind they are only open 8-3 Monday- Friday and Saturday from The fries here were a little different. They had more of a homestyle feel. They were wider than I was expecting, but were still crisp on the outside. The seasoning on top was also excellent. If you are in need for midday dessert after your meal, you won t find it here. I would recommend walking right next door to Gypsy Scoops. The Bearded Lady THE BEARDED LADY This Magnolia gastropub is serving up a large variety of craft brews and a select menu of bar food favorites like burgers, wings, and corn dogs. The main attraction is the Bearded L.U.S.T, a burger stuffed with roasted poblano and feta with gouda, avocado and caramelized onions on top. The flavors go well together, and the brioche bun was fluffy and buttery. I would also recommend the pulled pork sandwich. The pork is very tender, the sweet pickles are crisp, and the BBQ sauce is good. The fries are excellent and well seasoned, but the best side I ve had here is the bacon mac and cheese. It has plenty of cheese, and the bacon cuts right through and adds just enough salt. They will tell you the desserts on request, but I ve never had their dessert because I always find myself walking down the street to Melt. Restaurant Guide

No matter what sort of day you ve had, crispy tortilla chips dipped into a bowl of hot, melty cheese are bound to make it better. Here are some of the best places to get queso near TCU. We ranked based on price, chip and cheese quality, proximity to campus and extra ingredients. Each score is represented as X/5 blocks of cheese. 8. Yucatan Taco Stand PRICE: 3/5 ($5) CHEESE QUALITY: 2/5 CHIP FACTOR: 1/5 EXTRAS: 0/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 3/5 OVERALL SCORE: 1.8/5 Someone had to be last, and Yucatan Taco Stand secured that position almost immediately. The menu features $5 queso served with chips and hot sauce, which, seems like a bargain. I say seems because with the first bite of queso, it becomes apparent you get what you pay for at Yucatan. The chips are eerily similar to Julio s bagged chips right down to the inconsistent seasoning. As for the queso itself, it was bland and could be replicated at home with a few melted string cheeses. In short, it s not worth it. 7. Rodeo Goat PRICE: 2/5 ($6.50) CHEESE QUALITY: 2/5 CHIP FACTOR: 1/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 2/5 EXTRAS: 3/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 2/5 Rodeo Goat is pretty hit-and-miss as far as queso goes. Ordering it is a gamble, especially considering the $6.50 price tag. It s filled with extras like ground beef, pico and guacamole. However, if you go on a bad day, even the extras can t hide the Velveeta-like consistency. Rodeo Goat is known for its burgers, and queso won t likely be taking its place anytime soon. 6. Gloria s PRICE: 4/5 ($4) CHEESE QUALITY: 3/5 CHIP FACTOR: 2/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 2/5 EXTRAS: 0/5 Restaurant Guide

17 AVERAGE SCORE: 2.2/5 Nothing describes my experience with Gloria s queso quite like the phrase: I m not angry just disappointed. The atmosphere at the restaurant is great, but the queso not so much. It s the kind of queso one would expect to get from a food truck, not Gloria s. The cheese is a decent quality, but nowhere near good enough to justify a stand-alone queso. The chips are, in a way, notable just because of their complete lack of taste. In the end, the only thing the queso really has going for it is the fact it is $4. 5. Fuzzy s PRICE: 5/5 ($3.29) CHEESE QUALITY: 1.5/5 CHIP FACTOR: 1/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 5/5 EXTRAS: 2/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 2.9/5 Fuzzy s queso might be served a little cold with semi-stale chips, but it s the answer to anyone looking for cheap queso within walking distance. The one thing it has going for it is the pico, which is either fresh or at least tastes fresh in comparison to the cheese. For a.4 mile walk and $3.29, it isn t the best queso but it s worth it. 4. Brewed PRICE: 1/5 ($9.75) CHEESE QUALITY: 5/5 CHIP FACTOR: 4/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 2/5 EXTRAS: 3/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 3/5 If you re willing to pay $10 for queso then I have just the thing for you, Brewed goat cheese queso. The queso is made with fresh goat cheese and homemade chilli and salsa. Ultimately, if you re going to be on Magnolia and have some money to burn, Brewed queso is a bit of an investment, but it s worth it. 3. Chuy s PRICE: 2/5 ($6.79) CHEESE QUALITY: 5/5 CHIP FACTOR: 4/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 2/5 EXTRAS: 3/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 3.2/5 Chuy s was one of the highlights of this investigation. It isn t anything fancy just melted cheese mixed with ranchero sauce and green chili sauce, but it s definitely one of the top contenders for best queso. 18 cheese is just the right consistency. Overall, it s just simple queso done right. Also, it s free during happy hour. 2. Velvet Taco PRICE: 4/5 ($4.75) CHEESE QUALITY: 5/5 CHIP FACTOR: 5/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 2/5 EXTRAS: 3/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 3.8/5 Of all the contenders, Velvet Taco s queso might have the best quality cheese. The only extras it comes with are red onion and a basil leaf, but both serve to give the cheese more distinction. If you run out of queso don t worry because the blue corn chips are good enough eat on their own. 1. Torchy s PRICE: 3/5 ($5.50) CHEESE QUALITY: 5/5 CHIP FACTOR: 3/5 PROXIMITY TO CAMPUS: 4/5 EXTRAS: 5/5 AVERAGE SCORE: 4/5 Torchy s queso is what other quesos aspire to be. It s made with quality cheese and is loaded with extras like guacamole, basil and cotija cheese. It also comes with Torchy s signature diablo sauce which gives it an extra kick. Not to mention, it isn t too far away from campus nor is it too expensive. Pro-tip: Order a half order to get the same amount of chips and queso for half the price. I don t know why it works that way, but it does. For that, I am Restaurant Guide

Fans wearing purple on Fridays can even get special discount and deals at local businesses. Known as Go Purple Friday (GPF), over 61 retail stores, 56 restaurant and 42 service providers throughout the city offer special discounts and free items to fans wearing purple every week. SuperFrog can also be found around town at GPF locations, ready to take selfies with fans. By wearing purple on Fridays, fans can receive a free McAlister s cookie with the purchase of a meal, a free Cyclebar class, 20 percent off at J.Crew and much more. Kathleen Adkins, a senior nursing major, said she and her friends love GPF and often go to Chick-Fil-A and Dutch's Burger to get free food on Fridays. Freshman year, my friends and I tried to complete the entire TCU Go Purple Friday list, Adkins said. "We didn t do all of them, but we got pretty close." After talking to several managers at different locations, it seems many students have yet to take advantage of these deals. The J.Crew assistant manager, Keagon Rhodes, said they haven t had anyone use the offered 20 percent discount in the last three weeks. Despite a large array of game day clothing, Christa Watts, manager at Runway Seven, said they ve had little interest as well. Watts said they have only about 10 customers a week use the Friday discount. I love discounts, but I feel like it s not advertised very much, so I m not sure where to use it, said sophomore speech pathology major Audrey Warren. Restaurant Guide

Our handy guide will help you get reacquainted with the area and suggest places if you have food allergies or a four-legged guest. HG Sply Co. HG Sply Co. is a paleo spot down University Drive. HG s menu is vegan, vegetarian and meat-friendly. For those with special diets, HG has customizable options that can accommodate anyone s needs. The vegan queso, a healthy twist on a Texas classic, is a customer favorite. HG is one of my favorite spots to eat in Fort Worth, Jillian Fuhrmann, a senior marketing major, said. I have dietary restrictions, which makes it hard to find healthy options that taste good, but HG always does the trick. Righteous Foods Eating righteously is the goal at this health-conscious option on West 7th. Serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, the options can change the way you think about healthy eating. All the ingredients are organically sourced and allergy and vegetarian-friendly. There s even a detox section if you re feeling guilty after tailgating all Saturday. Spiral Diner & Bakery Spiral Diner & Bakery coins itself as vegan comfort food from the Lone Star State. This West Magnolia Avenue spot serves burgers, sandwiches, hot plates and desserts, but with a twist: Everything at this joint is plant-based. Melt Ice Creams Melt Ice Creams shop can be a great spot for a post-tailgate cool down. This craft ice cream shop serves up home-made flavors and toppings, including several vegan flavors. Melt uses fresh fruits and herbs to create its distinct flavors. Eatzi s Market and Bakery Eatzi s is a Dallas original that made its way to Fort Worth over the summer. Here, the options are endless. From a salad bar to a build your own sandwich station, there is something for everyone. The cafeteria-style restaurant allows chefs to accommodate tastes and dietary restrictions. There are also pre-prepared meals for on-the-go eaters. Woodshed Smokehouse Located only a few miles from campus, Woodshed Smokehouse is a Fort Worth staple from local chef Tim Love. With ample outdoor seating, Woodshed is ideal for pet owners who don t want to leave their dogs at home. Woodshed even has a menu for Restaurant Guide

23 dogs. Love created Woodshed as a one-stop shop for all things grilled. There is a daily rotating menu of various meats and vegetables grilled over different woods and fire sources. Press Cafe A new spot in the Clearfork area, Press Cafe serves up a wide variety of salads and sandwiches. It s popular for brunch. Located along the Trinity River, Press Cafe has a relaxed atmosphere and an outdoor patio perfect for pet lovers. On Saturdays, the Clearfork farmers market opens next door for some morning shopping. Fort Worth Food Park Fort Worth s first food truck park features a rotating selection of gourmet food trucks manned by some of the city s top chefs. Located in the West 7th district, this spot is a place to kick back with friends or four-legged animals. It s only open on the weekends, but it s casual atmosphere works for a post-game bite. Rodeo Goat Rodeo Goat serves Photo by Gracie Livingston up gourmet burgers and craft brews in a warehouse space off West 7th. This restaurant offers plenty of seating for big groups and family dinners. There s even an outdoor patio where all pets are welcome. The cheese fries, steaming pile, and chaca oaxaca burger are staples at this Fido-friendly joint. I loved serving outside, especially when guests brought their pets, said Hannah Davis, a TCU senior and former server at Rodeo Goat. It makes the atmosphere friendlier and relaxing for everyone. Mash d Mash d is another West 7th joint, which is nearby several sports bars perfect for watching the TCU game. Known for its food and moonshine, the environment at Mash d is relaxed and social. It s a place to feel at home while chowing down on some American classics. Pets are also welcome in the outdoor seating space. Restaurant Guide
