2 From the Principal: Dear TAISM High School Parents: Thank you to the parents who attended the High School Parent Coffee Morning on Monday, April 30th. I know that it is not possible for many of you to come to school at that time, and I am grateful that so many of you were able to attend. The two related topics, transitions and third culture kids (TCKs), resonated strongly with those who attended, as they might with you. Several of the attendees identified with the experiences and emotions of being an Adult Third Culture Kid (ATCK), and these ideas are likely to be personally relevant for many other parents in our community. If you are interested, please take a few minutes to review the presentation and the accompanying handouts posted on the High School page at parents.taism.com. The feedback we received indicated that the Ruth VanReken TedxTalk titled Third Culture Kids: the impact of growing up in a globalized world (embedded in the presentation) established a strong context for understanding these issues, and the practical ideas in the handouts for supporting children as they go through transitions was very helpful. One of these ideas is to help children build a RAFT from their current situation to the new situation they are moving into. RAFT is an acronym for: Reconciliation: When we hear that we are leaving, it is often easy to ignore any interpersonal difficulties we may be having. However, these difficulties do not go away when we leave and this mental baggage may even affect our future relationships. Therefore, it is very important to resolve any conflicts before we leave. In order to do this, we need to both forgive and be forgiven. Farewells: It important to say good-bye to people, places, pets and things that are important to us. This may involve for example giving somebody a gift, attending a party for people we want to say goodbye to, planting a tree in your favorite spot or taking pictures of what we cherish. Think Destination: Finally, it is imperative to begin thinking about the future destination by asking questions about it and considering what resources you will have there to aid with the transition. It may for example be helpful to research the new place online and/or get in contact with other families in the new destination. Our high school counselors, Ms. Chrystal Kelly and Ms. Cheryl Brown, are outstanding resources on these topics. Please also note that we have several excellent books on these topics available in the TAISM High School Library. A list of these titles and authors can be found on the document titled Transitions and Third Culture Kids posted along with the presentation and handouts on the High School page at parents.taism.com. Thank you for trusting us with your child at TAISM. I am grateful for their contributions to our school and community, and we look forward to their successful transition from grade to grade, to and from TAISM, and when they graduate from TAISM to the next phase of their life. Sincerely, Richard Petersen Affirmation: By acknowledging the influence of a person in our lives, relationships can be built and maintained. This can involve identifying special teachers, friends and family members and acknowledging them for example with notes and/or gifts.
3 HS Art: AP students are submitting their portfolios today. Each student will submit 24 works, 12 of which are based on an exploration of a theme or concept. Jaifer Sultan focused on the anatomic diversity and narrative quality of eyes. Layal Sultan s works represent aspects of Omani culture. Rannissa Rangkuti is submitting a design portfolio which explores the physical integration of technology and humanity. Tamima Al Shanfari and Janan Behjoo each want to emphasize the commonality shared between Arab, Persian and Western teenagers as well as broaden Western conceptions of youth in the region. Antonia Andersson is exploring the dynamics of light, and Rafaella Saa Rodriguez is trying to raise awareness of child poverty in her home country of Ecuador. Student works will be evaluated and scored by an even mix of high school and college art instructors who are divided into small groups that must reach a consensus. About 50,000 portfolios are submitted each year with only percent receiving the highest score. Unfortunately, other than a numerical score, no feedback is provided by AP Collegeboard, though students get plenty of critique throughout the year from me. Classroom grades reflect my sense of a student s effort and growth evidenced by work both in and outside of the studio. Few AP art students actually go on to major in art, but most will take an art course or two in college. - Ray Montoya (MS/HS Art Teacher) Tamima Al Shanfari (11) Layal Sultan (12) Antonia Andersson (12) Jaiffer Sultan (12) Janan Behjoo (11) Ranissa Rangkuti (11) Rafaella Saa Rodriguez (11)
