Breakfast Parfait Ingredients: ¾ cup low-fat cottage cheese or low-fat plain yogurt 1 cup pineapple chunks, papaya chunks or cling peaches 2 teaspoons toasted wheat germ You can tell the child where yogurt comes from. Ask what else is made with milk or is considered Dairy Products. Directions: Place cottage cheese (or yogurt) in a small bowl. Top with fruit and sprinkle with wheat germ. Courtesy of: EatingWell FYI: You can substitute the plain yogurt for flavored yogurt and use corresponding fruit such as peach yogurt and peaches.
Quick Breakfast Taco Ask your child where tacos come from? Or you can tell them tacos come from Mexico and then ask about other food origins. FYI: If your child does not like salsa you can substitute a little ketchup or no condiment.
PB&J with Banana & Granola Wrap FYI: You can substitute the Peanut Butter and Jelly for cream cheese (Low-Fat)
Baked Banana-Stuffed French Toast Eighteen other countries eat French toast under other names with different meanings such as: France s French toast means Lost Bread FYI: You can use strawberries instead of Banana in the French toast.
Multi-Grain Waffles Waffles come from waffle irons of the middle ages. They were like the present waffle irons but they had many different designs to choose from not just the honey comb shape. FYI: You can make the waffles ahead of time or use leftovers wrapped individually in plastic wrap then heat toaster or toaster oven.
Oatmeal Banana Pancakes Ingredients: ½ cup of oatmeal 3 egg whites 1 medium banana, lightly mashed Cinnamon (to taste) Vanilla (to taste) Athletes do not like to leave home without their bananas because of the burst of energy they provide. What are your favorite sports where bananas would help give you more energy? FYI: Eating just 2 bananas will give enough natural energy to exercise for an hour and a half because of the high amount of vitamins and minerals.
Bagel Gone Bananas Monkeys like bananas for the same reason that people do, because they are sweet. What are some other reasons that you think monkeys like bananas? FYI: To keep bagels for longer periods, they can be frozen. Slice them, place in freezer bag and seal tightly. When you are ready to eat them, they can be popped in the toaster while frozen.
Mini Mushroom and Sausage Quiches Quiche can be served as breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a snack. What are some things you could put in it to make it different for each meal? FYI: When making quiche, it will turn out better if the ingredients are very cold. For this same reason, it is best to not handle the food much while preparing.
Mexican Breakfast Wrap FYI: Cheese is considered to be low fat when there are 3 grams or less of fat per one-ounce serving.
Mango-Passion Fruit Smoothie FYI: Did you know that Mangos originated in Southeast Asia. And that mango trees are evergreens and can grow up to 60 feet tall!
Scrambled Egg Burritos What is something that you are looking forward to today? FYI: You could substitute the eggs for egg whites to lower calories, fat, and cholesterol. Also you could microwave the tortillas between damp paper towels for about 30 seconds or until hot.
Whole-Wheat Apple Pancakes Where is one place that you want to go and why? FYI: Did you know that the first ready-mix food, which was sold commercially, was Aunt Jemima pancake flour. It was invented in 1889 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Vanilla Spice Oatmeal Ask your child to talk about their favorite subject in school. FYI: Oats contain a large amount of carbohydrates and fiber. This promotes very slow digestion and can keep the hunger at bay for a longer time.
Baked Apple-Cinnamon French Toast Talk about something relating to breakfast food from your childhood, maybe a story or some memory. FYI: This would be a great breakfast meal when having family over for a holiday or a weekend.
Whole-Grain French Toast Why do you think it is called French toast? What part about it makes it French? FYI: White bread digests in the body like sugar would. By changing from white bread to whole grain it allows your body to digest smoother.
Smoothies What are some other fruit mixes that can be used to make a good smoothie?
Ingredients: Poached Egg Florentine 2 cups fresh spinach 2 whole, free range eggs 1 whole wheat muffin What are all the different ways to cook an egg? FYI: A medium sized poached egg has 64 calories where as a fried egg has 92 calories.
Fruit Salad with Cinnamon What do you think the cinnamon does to the fruit? What value does cinnamon serve? FYI: Any mix of fruit can be used for this meal. Feel free to clear the fridge.
Scrambled Eggs with Bacon and Vegetables What part of the turkey does turkey bacon come from? FYI: Turkey bacon works just as well in this recipe. You will just have little bacon grease.
English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich Ingredients: 1 whole wheat English muffin 1 egg 1 piece of sliced cheese 1 Tbs. low-fat butter Mustard to taste See if your child knows why an English muffin is English FYI: When cooking an egg if you use low-fat butter instead of frying them in cooking oil it reduces the grams of fat.
Banana Almond Pancakes Ingredients: 2 bananas 1 egg 1-2 Tbs. almond butter Fresh blueberries 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped 1 tsp. coconut oil Talk about what good things different fruits can give our bodies; for example, bananas give us potassium.
Omelet Muffins FYI: You can change the vegetables and meats as you please adding different ones and changing it up to fit your taste
Sausage Stir-Fry Discuss where the meat you eat at home comes from FYI: Nitrate/nitrite free is a compound forms nitric oxide which is used in order to stabilize the color of meats
Western Omelet Discuss why we wash vegetables before we eat or cook with them FYI: Add a spoonful of salsa for more flavor!
Cranberry-Orange Scones What is your favorite time of day and why? FYI: These keep very well in the freezer.
