2 Why do Bath Bombs Fizz? Have you ever wondered why Bath bombs Fizz? Although great fun, there is chemistry behind the fizzing. So for those who like to know these things. When you drop a Bath Bomb into the bath tub and it begins to dissolve in the water there is a reaction between the acid part and the alkaline part of the Bomb. The main two components are Citric Acid and Bicarbonate of Soda (aka Bi-Carb). Citric Acid is used in cordials and other foods, and it is also used to balance the ph in shampoos and other skincare products. Sodium Bicarbonate is used in the kitchen, laundry and to soften the bath water. The result of this reaction is a salt called Sodium Citrate. When you drop the bath bomb into the water in the course of the reaction, Carbon Dioxide is released this is the bubble and fizz! The reaction causes the bubbles you see, much like carbonated soft drinks such as Soda Water and when you dissolve an Aspro tablet in water. Alka Seltzer Tablets used this same principle (if you can remember taking these when you had an upset stomach). The other bits and bobs in Bath Bombs such as Cocoa Butter, Colour and Fragrance are added are for aesthetics such as visual appeal, sensory effects and skin feel after the bath. With this kit you can make the Bath Bombs in the mould packs, or if you are feeling brave, unmould them and re-use the two halves. We suggest that if you have not made a lot of Bath Bombs or Fizzies you don t attempt the unmoulding. You have a couple of recipes to play with - one basic recipe and one using Cocoa Butter The method is identical for all bomb recipes (unless you own a hydraulic press!), but the second one is a little more moisturising. Many recipes call for oil to help bind them beware of adding oil not only does this make the bath very slippery it can zero out the fizz factor. *graphic used with permission With Bath Bombs - Practise makes perfect! Unmoulding yes or no? Normally you unmould your Bath Bomb after PRESSING REALLY FIRMLY the near dry mixture into the mould (remember we don t have that press), then wait a couple of minutes before unmoulding by tapping it swiftly and firmly on the bench top. With the sphere Bath Bomb Mould Pack you can leave the bath bombs in there! So you ll need to know how to join the two halves, rather than unmould
3 Here s how to use these moulds: Fill each half of the mould a dessert spoonful of mixture at a time, pressing down fairly firmly as you fill Then add a little extra bath bomb mixture to the centre of one half (this will help to keep it all together) To ensure a clean finish, brush any crumbs that have fallen into the seam areas away with a paintbrush or tissue. Then wipe the seams with a piece of clean paper towel to avoid any imperfections or issues when you join the two halves together Line up the two eyelet sections (unless you are cutting them off) Then, not wasting any time, press the two mould halves together using direct pressure to the edges of the mould rather than the centre TIPS: Don't forget to line up the eyelets of each side when joining the halves together, unless you are trimming these off. Note too that if the mould is packed too firmly it can make it difficult to open and close the packaging Styles: Stripey Layers - You can also layer two or three different colours if you are feeling a little creative. With this kit you could have a contrast of white, and two shades of the colour you chose. You simply divide the mixture up into two or three bowls, one for each colour and spoon the different coloured layers into the shells pressing the layers down as you go. The beauty of hand packing the moulds is that you can have a horizontal layered Bath Bomb, or even funky slanting stripey rainbow Bomb in abstract pattern. Botanicals and Salt Decorations - You can add the dried flower petals to the bottom of the mould before you begin adding the mixture. Pink Himalayan Sea Salt looks nice too! Pure White Zen Style - You don t need to colour your bombs, it is a personal choice you can make. There is loads of colour in the little bottle in this kit, so use it up in soap and other bath products. We recommend diluting some colour in some distilled water prior to adding to avoid colour bombing the bath! Check our free Formulary on our Website for all usage applications. TIP: If your bombs should fail (perhaps you need to have a little more practice, they can still be great fun when used as a Fizzy Bath Powder (fairy sprinkles add a little glitter and you have fairy dust!) Just add a tablespoon to a bath of warm water and enjoy them that way! To keep things manageable, we recommend making two or more batches of mixture so you can keep an eye on the moisture content as you go
4 Basic Fizzy Bomb Ingredients: 1 cup Bicarbonate of Soda ½ cup Cornflour 2/3 cup Citric Acid drops Essential or Fragrance Liquid Colour Equipment Required A glass, ceramic or stainless steel bowl, a strainer or sieve, mixing spoon Mould cases The Spritzer Bottle filled with choice of water Method: 1. Sift or sieve all the dry ingredients into a bowl and stir thoroughly 2. Dilute some colour into an old cup, the drip in some colour and mix well with your fingers. It will take a little time to work it well through the mixture 3. Add some Essential Oil or Fragrance (to suit your own nose) and stir through well so as to not activate the mix 4. Next start to blend the batch with a wooden spoon, and occasionally spritz with water about 4 spritzes at a time. Don't use too much spray or you will activate the bombs! The mixture should ALWAYS feel dry 5. You may like to get your hands in the mixture at this point. You need to watch out for a temperature drop in the mixture this is the point when you have added enough moisture it will suddenly feel cold 6. The mixture should hold together when squeezed VERY firmly in your hand, and should feel a little dry if it feels moist it will start to activate. Patience is the key 7. Now on to moulding, you are nearly there! Place a few flower petals into the mould cavity 8. Pack the mixture slowly and VERY tightly into the mould, working in layers and then keep the final section compressed down for a few seconds. (Step by Step instructions on previous page) 9. Leave in the mould for 2-3 minutes 10. Beware of open doors and humidity, both will tend to activate the unsealed bombs and unused mixture 11. Done! Make a swing tag or label and attach ONLY IF ATTEMPTING UNMOULDING: There is no need to leave to set in the mould, you can tap out the fizzies and refill moulds within a couple of minutes. If left too long in the mould the fizzies will be more difficult to unmould. Don t forget, there are lots of tips and information in our Recipe Formulary on our Website the link is at the top in the centre of every page! You ll also find a Tutorial on Soap-Queen TV that is very helpful (If you have chosen Bramble Berry Fragrances in this kit, Anne-Marie is the CEO of Bramble Berry):
5 Butterball Bliss Bombs Ingredients: 1 cup Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 cup Cornflour 1/2 cup Citric Acid 2 teaspoons finely grated Cocoa Butter drops Essential Oil or Fragrance Flower petals if desired Colour if desired Equipment Required A glass, ceramic or stainless steel bowl, a strainer or sieve, mixing spoon Mould cases The Spritzer Bottle filled with choice of water Method: 1. This is only slightly different than the basic method 2. After sieving, add the grated Cocoa Butter and manually stir through the mixture 3. Continue as previously described 4. To vary the look of the finished bomb, a few flower petals can be sprinkled into the base of the mould prior to filling with mixture THE INGREDIENTS Bicarbonate of Soda Also referred to as Baking Soda. Most of us will find a box of Bi-Carb Soda in the pantry; it helps relieve itching, deodorises, and softens bath water. It has a skin soothing and softening effect. Bi-carb is the mainstay of all Bath Bomb mixes and in many other bath goodies too. Citric Acid Originally derived from citrus fruit. It is used commonly in hair and skincare products and many post perm ingredients to neutralise odour. Citric Acid has astringent and antioxidant properties and also can be used as a stabiliser. Used as a flavouring and preservative in foods and beverages (including cordials) and is also used in bath products as it puts the FIZZ in Bath Bombs. Used as a ph adjuster in many personal care products. Cocoa Butter This is the main ingredient in Chocolate - YUM! Obtained from the Cocoa bean, it has a melting point C. Helps maintain elasticity of the skin. Cocoa Butter has a characteristic and wonderful chocolate scent and contributes skin softening and moisturising properties to products. Cornflour Usually not from corn, but from wheat. Very fine, silky flour useful in bath bombs, powders and deodorants. Available from the supermarket. In the USA it is known as Corn Starch. Useful to smooth out the blend of Citric and Bi-carb. If you are allergic to Wheat products on your skin, substitute with more bicarbonate of Soda or a Wheat Free alternative. Note: Many people may be intolerant to wheat taken internally, but don t react externally do a spot test to check if you are unsure. You can exchange this ingredient with the same amount of Citric Acid but if omitting it ensure the ratio between Bicrb and Citric is 2:1 overall. Calendula Petals Included for decoration. Calendula however, is soothing and gentle and very useful when infused as an addition to Lotions and Creams. or Lavender Included for decoration. However, Lavender is soothing, calming and gentle and one of the most often used Essential Oils. Calms the agitated mind, heals the body and soothes away ills. Essential Oils, Bramble Berry Fragrances and Cosmetic Colour please see our website for attributes and details of the individual scents and colour in this kit - 5 -
