As a result, birth rates declined from 31.4 in 1989 to less than 17.0 in Despite this, in rural areas families are larger and poverty is high so the government are planning to reintroduce the two child policy. Today, Vietnam s population is 86 million and two thirds of these people are under 35 years old. Couples generally have small families, but abortions are used by some couples to ensure they have at least one boy to meet cultural expectations. As a result, the male : female ratio climbed to 112 : 100 last year. However not everyone sees the growing younger population as a problem. In Vietnam now, life expectancy is rising, the fertility rate is decreasing and in the next 20 years many people will be in the older age group (65+), said a member of the United Nations Population Fund. If there are not enough people able to work because the population is ageing, the country will face a lot of problems.
