Namens die organiseerders wil ek graag alle besoekers aan Ficksburg se 40 ste Kersiefees verwelkom. Dit is vir my n trotse voorreg om deel te wees van hierdie besondere geleentheid. Ek is al 15 jaar by die fees betrokke en het die afgelope 10 jaar as voorsitter gedien is n besondere jaar vir die Kersiefees en ons vertrou dat ons al die elemente saamgesnoer het om die beste Kersiefees ooit vir u te kan bring. Ons het groot moeite gedoen om die feesterrein op te grader om sodoende die fees vir u meer gemaklik te maak. Dit het ons oor die R1 miljoen gekos om vanjaar se geleentheid te bewaarheid. Ek, my komitee en ons borge is trots om in staat te wees om die 40 ste Kersiefees aan u te kan bied. Ek vertrou dat u dit net so baie sal geniet as wat ek my deel van die skepping daarvan geniet het. Their ruby-red colour and sweet taste won cherries a noble place on the tables of Roman conquerors, Greek citizens and Chinese noblemen. Cherries were first brought to South Africa by ship by German missionaries with the early settlers in the 1900s. The first successful cherry trees were planted in South Africa in 1905 on the farm Platkop in the Clocolan district after Harry Pickston had contacted German missionaries in South Africa to enquire about growing cherries. A year later five hectares of trees were brought to Clocolan to be planted on the farm. The varieties included Giant Heidelfinger, Bing, Early River, Early Red and Elton. Some of the original cherry trees can still be seen on the farm today. These cultivars are still grown in the area. It is estimated that there 500 hectares of cherry trees in the Eastern Free State concentrated mainly in the Ficksburg, Clocolan and Fouriesburg area. There are approximately 250 trees per hectare and the average yield per hectare is 10 tons. Maraschino cherries, most often used in drinks and in ice cream sundaes, are made from sweet cherries. The maraschino cherry originates in Yugoslavia and northern Italy where merchants added a liqueur to a local cherry called the Marasca. Hennie Pretorius Agricultural Member Johannes Samuels Grounds The first Cherry Festival was held in Ficksburg in 1967, presented by the local Jaycees and launched with a street procession through the town, a Cherry Ball and the crowing of a Cherry Queen. The festival has grown over the years into a three-day event which each year attracts more than visitors. The festival is beneficial to Ficksburg because it creates employment and is the town s largest marketing tool. An important partner in the organisation of the annual festival is the Agricultural Show Committee, which has been in existence for 47 years, and which has has over the last six years co-operated closely with the Cherry Festival Committee. Voorverhit oond tot C. Smeer n muffinpan. 2. Meng hawermout, bruismeel, bruinsuiker, bakpoeier, kaneel, sout en amandelvlokkies in n mengbak. 3. Klits karringmelk, eiers en olie. Meng by droë bestanddele. Kap kersies grof en vou liggies in. 4. Skep muffinpan driekwart vol met mengsel en bak vir minute of tot gaar. 5. Laat vir vyf minute in pan afkoel voor dit uitgekeer word. Die amandelvlokkies kan deur 2,5ml amandelgeursel vervang word. Die muffins vries goed. Ontdooi hulle vir 10 minute by C.

4 4 Offical White Star Cherry Festival Programme 2007 Church s stained glass windows a work of art The beautiful coloured glass windows of the All Saints Church in Ficksburg, known far and wide and one of the town s major tourist attractions, are a glorious testimony to the magnificence of God s creation. Created over a span of a year by a talented local artist, Helen Dickson, these 10 unusual and picturesque windows depict the indigenous wild flowers that grow around Ficksburg. The flowers for each window were chosen to fit the personalities of some of the people commemorated by them. Helen used broken coloured glass from all sorts of sources bottles, dishes and tumblers, as well as some glass imported from Italy, which she glued onto ordinary window glass in layers, giving the window a three-dimensional appearance as well as creating the required shades. Inside the church visitors are astounded, as the sun shines through the windows, by the agapanthus, protea, lobelias, erythrina and other flowers that come ablaze with luminous colour. The All Saints Church dates from 1891 and, unlike the many sandstone churches in the area, was built of unbaked mud bricks. It is plastered on the outside to protect it from the weather and woodpanelled inside to hide the poor surface of the walls that have deteriorated with the passing of time. Although still in use as a place of worship for the town s Anglican congregation, the church s main claim to fame is its unique windows. The church, which is on the corner of Lang and Piet Retief Streets, will be open for viewing between 10:00 and 17:00 on the Thursday and Friday and between 10:00 and 13:00 on the Saturday of the festival. Our famous and delicious Cherry Liqueur What you need: 400g (500ml) sugar 1,5kg cherries Brandy What you must do: 1. Fill a bottle with cherries, tightly packed. 2. Dissolve the sugar in brandy, fill the bottle and close tightly. 3. Store for three months. 4. Remove cherries and use with ice cream or in tarts. Cherry Sauce for Smoked Chicken What you need: 410g tin of canned cherries 100ml orange juice Peel of a ¼ orange 30ml lemon juice 15ml brown sugar What you must do: 1. Add all the ingredients and heat to boiling point. 2. Reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Remove orange peel. 4. Add 15ml brandy or cherry liqueur. 5. To serve: Arrange meat on platter and pour sauce to cover meat. Replenish your soul at the floral festival Amongst the hustle and bustle of the Cherry Festival there will be two havens of tranquillity and beauty in Ficksburg the Methodist Church and Hall in Toorn Street. Housed in these sacred buildings is Flowers of Praise, an exhibition of spiritual beauty sure to replenish the souls of visitors. This floral festival created by the Christian women of Ficksburg is their act of worship and thanksgiving and is intended to permit visitors of a more contemplative nature to stop and allow their souls to be charmed by that which is Godgiven and natural. The flower arrangements portray the favourite Scripture passages of the arrangers. Visitors can visit the Flowers of Praise exhibition between 10:00 and 17:00 on the Thursday and Friday and between 10:00 and 13:00 on the Saturday of the festival. This year promises to be the best year ever Sit back and enjoy The Cherry Festival has become household name in South Africa and I am proud to be part of that brand. It has taken hard work and dedication to reach the level this festival has attained. No matter where you are in the country, the word associated with Ficksburg is cherries. The festival takes a year to organize and the result of all this hard work lasts only for three days. Last year was a great disappointment for me. Just when the festival was hitting its stride, we had 132mm of rain in 8. It was heartbreaking to see all the hard work destroyed by an act of nature. To see visitors walking around barefoot in the mud and rain. This year I can, however, breathe more easily as we have upgraded the grounds to counter these problems, should the unthinkable happen and heavy rain occur again. This year is the 40th year that the festival will take place, which makes it the oldest crop festival in the country. The 2007 festival promises to be the best ever. There is a wonderful line up of entertainment and attractions on offer. I believe that the weather will be fantastic over the festival and you can sit back and relax and enjoy the show. 5 The idea for the first Cherry Festival took root in 1968 when a group of young men who had founded a Ficksburg chapter of Jaycee International, the international service/leadership development organization, were looking for a project not only to launch their new organization, but also to perform a service to the community. Looking back, one of the organizers of that first festival says that as many ideas were originally thrown around, it is difficult to say exactly how they arrived at the decision to present a cherry festival! What is sure, however, is that Ficksburg is the largest cherry-producing area in South Africa, followed by its two neighbours, Clocolan and Fouriesburg and, to a lesser extent, parts of the Ladybrand district. The Jaycees thus connected a Ficksburg product to a festival that would promote both the cherry industry and the town. Today Ficksburg is known throughout the country as the Cherry Town, and the two have become synonymous. Through the years the Cherry Festival has grown in stature and has become one of the must-do events in South Africa, with thousands of visitors visiting the Eastern Free State during cherry time. The Cherry Carnival, what the Cherry Festival was then known as, was (according to one of the Jaycees involved in the first festival) a very amateurish presentation consisting of a film-show at which the Cherry Queen was chosen. Offical White Star Cherry Festival Programme How the Cherry Festival started way back... This was followed the next day by a street procession consisting of, amongst others, floats and drum majorettes and a small open-air programme. The grand Cherry Ball, however, was a great success. Today the presentation is professional and the programme caters for a variety of tastes. It seems that the festival is the oldest crop festival in the country. The Jaycees ran the festival from 1968 to After the Jaycees disbanded in 1985, a community committee took over the organizing. Types of Cherries Sours: Amarelles (light colored) The origin of cherries The Romans are believed to have discovered sweet cherries in Asia Minor in about 70 BC and introduced them to Britain in the first century AD. Although the fruit has always been popular for dessert and culinary purposes, cherries were used during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for their medicinal properties. The German word Kirsch, the cherry liqueur, came from the word karshu, the name given to the first cultivated cherries in Mesopotamia in 8 BC. Hot cherry stones were once used in bed-warming pans and Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream asincluding mascaras or maraschinos Morellos or griottes (black in color) made into kirsch Sweets: Mazzards (small black fruits) Geans (soft, juicy flesh) Bigarreaus (firm, dry flesh) including the white Napoleon, the Bing, and the Ranier. The sweet cherry is related to the wild fruit that was indigenous to the Black and Caspian Seas, Turkey and Iran. The sour cherry seems to be a hybrid of a wild ground cherry and the sweet cherry that grew in the central and eastern areas of Europe. Records indicate that cherries were a prized food in a region of China dating back to 600 BC - generally considered a food for royalty. Steamed Green Vegetable Wraps What you need: Green vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, mange-tout, courgette, fennel and spring onion Wrapper: Baking paper or washed spinach leaves or banana leaves Cotton string to tie the wraps. What you must do: 1. Place the vegetables on your choice of wrapper and tie with string. 2. Place into steamer or a pot of boiling water to steam lightly. 3. It is home to the highest sandstone building in the country, the mill which used to be the hub of this once thriving district. While driving along the dirt road, one can see only the remains of this beautiful building. Heading past the siding, in the distance you can see Goodhope Farm where fields and fields of blue flowers are glistening in the afternoon sunlight. As you draw nearer you realise that these are lavender fields in the heart of the Free State. For a moment, it feels as if you are in France in the Provence Region, known for its lavender. The crisp afternoon air is filled with the sweet scent of lavender that covers the whole area with a soothing tranquility. Although lavender thrives in a Mediterranean climate, some varieties are frosthardy and do well in colder climates. Not all varieties of lavender produce oils; some are used for oils and others for their garden and decorative qualities. An average lavender plant produces two crops of flowers a year. The first harvest is in December and the second around Easter. The flowers produce the oil and are cut off for distillation purposes. It takes approximately 1kg of flowers to produce 30ml of concentrated oil. There are many varieties of lavender worldwide, but only a few are used for producing oil. The main variety used here is Grosso as it also produces an abundance of flowers. There are about 7000 lavender plants per hectare and the average plant lives for about 10 years. Once the oil is extracted, it needs to be kept in a cool dark place. The oil is sold to soap manufactures and perfume companies, as well as a large percentage to aromatherapy companies, where the oils are used in treatments for relaxation. You might think that only cherries are grown in the Eastern Free State, but right next to the lavender field is a plantation of berries. In neat rows all tied up and trained along wire, are thousands of berry vines under shade-cloth. Each vine is laden with clusters of succulent ripe berries waiting to be picked. During the lavender and berry seasons, visitors are welcome to visit Goodhope Farm, by appointment only. Fresh berries and other products are on sale at the farm and the bottled jam makes a delicious gift for the visitor passing through the area. Hoe om dit te maak: 1. This tour includes transport to the farm, a tour of the packing shed, information on the cultivation and packing of cherries, picking of cherries in the orchard and eating as much as you like, plus a punnet to fill and take home. Products such as jams, liqueur, wine and fresh cherrieswill be on sale at the Ionia Farm Stall. Cost of tour: R150 per person Ben Nevis Cherry Cellars This tour includes a visit to the packing sheds, a wine tasting session and a punnet of cherries to take home. A wide variety of cherry products will also be on sale at the farm. Live entertainment at the cellars. Cost of tour: R120 per person Loskop Cherry Farm This tour includes transport to the farm, a visit to the packing shed, information on the cultivation and packing of cherries, picking of cherries in the orchards and eating as much as you like, plus a punnet to take home. Cost of tour: R120 per person GP Asparagus This tour includes transport to the farm, a visit to GP s asparagus fields and a visit to the factory to taste asparagus prepared the traditional German way. A short talk on the cultivation, harvesting and packing of asparagus will be given. You will also receive a punnet of fresh asparagus to take home. Cost of tour: R80 per person White Mischief River Cruise Take a step back in time and enjoy a colonial cruise along the Meulspruit Dam, sipping a cocktail or a G&T. The cruise includes transport to the dam, and a cruise which meanders through a game park that is home to more than 600 antelope and 250 species of birds. Bar facility is available on board and a sandwich will be provided. The White Mischief is situated 4km from Ficksburg and is the only floating cigar and single malt bar in Africa. Cost of tour: R130 per person Lootsberg Sandstone Tour Not only cherries and asparagus are the major products of this region, but so is sandstone. Take this unique opportunity to see how sandstone is cut into architectural features and garden ornaments. Included in the tour is transport to the farm and a sandstone paperweight.
