1 Wasaga Beach Garden Club June 2014 The weather is warm so you ve probably all been in your gardens fighting the mosquitoes and weeds. Don t forget to do some stretching exercises to warm up before you start digging and drink plenty of water during your breaks. Please mark your calendar for these upcoming Meetings and Events Club Picnic Our picnic is on June 22 nd. Lunch will be served at 1:00 p.m. at the Klondike Sports Park (Klondike Park Rd and Power Line Rd) Lunch and drinks will be provided. Because this is a public park, there will be no alcohol served. You can still sign up by contacting Susan Rankine at dandsrankine@bell.net. Be sure to bring your own plate, cutlery, napkin, mug and chair. Alliston Horticultural Society hosts Paul Zammit Paul Zammit will be speaking at the Alliston Hort Society meeting on Tuesday, June 24th at St Johns' United Church in Alliston. The meeting will get under way by 7:30 pm. Paul will be speaking about Plants that light up the shade. He's always an interesting speaker. Bring a friend and come for the fun of it. Brentwood Annual Strawberry Social The Brentwood Horticultural Society has invited members of the Wasaga Beach Garden Club to their Annual Strawberry Social on June 24 th in the Brentwood Community Hall from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Strawberry Social speaker will be Frank Solty who will be discussing Pruning and Grafting. 2 Creemore Horticultural Society BUS TRIP TO FOLMER'S PERENNIAL GARDENS Wasaga Beach Garden Club has been invited to join this bus trip. Visit exceptional gardens and enjoy the camaraderie of horticultural friends in our District. The Folmer's Gardens are located on Highway 9, seven kilometers west of Walkerton. The trip is on June 28 th from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and starts at Creemore... the STATION ON THE GREEN...and ends there after a wonderful day! We would ask you to mention this fund to any young people in Simcoe County that you may know who share a love of horticulture and who may wish to take advantage of this fund to assist them in their pursuit of post secondary school education. Look what Maureen is growing Kingfisher Corydalis - Plants form a clump of elegant, lacy green leaves, bearing upright stems with dangling tubular flowers in the most amazing electric-blue shade. Best in regions with cool summers, where the plants can be in flower from spring right through to late fall. In hot areas plants generally go dormant in midsummer, sometimes coming up again in the fall, or otherwise in spring. Choose a rich, woodland soil that remains evenly moist. Dislikes summer drought. Divide carefully in early spring. Yellow Lady's Slipper: Exquisite and unusual, this wild orchid is distinguished by its inflated lemon-yellow pouch and twisted burgundy-brown petals; extremely slow growing and an endangered native plant. Yellow Lady's Slipper will grow to be about 12 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 12 inches. This perennial should be grown in a location that is shaded from the hot afternoon sun. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth. It is particular about its soil conditions, with a strong preference for rich, neutral soils. This plant can be propagated by multiplication of the underground bulbs 4

Let s be environmentally friendly What are you collecting for your favorite cause? Let us know if you re collecting pop tabs, grocery tapes, cosmetic containers or any small item. Bring a basket to our meetings and we will provide space at our meetings then you can take your baskets home at the end of the evening. What a great environmentally sound idea that will keep these items out of our land fill sites. We re now collecting cosmetic containers, pop tabs and Tassimo cups. Contributions to the Newsletter Including recipes, gardening tips should be forwarded to Eva Caulfield by evacaulfield@gmail.com Rustic Rhubarb Tart Ingredients Pastry: 6 cups (1.5 L) chopped rhubarb 1 cup (250 ml) granulated sugar 1/4 cup 1 (60 ml) all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp (1 ml) nutmeg 1/4 cup (60 ml) coarsely chopped pecans 1 tbsp (15 ml) milk icing sugar 3 cups (750 ml) all-purpose flour 1/4 cup (60 ml) granulated sugar 1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt 1-1/2 cup (375 ml) cold butter 2/3 cup (150 ml) cold water Preparation Pastry: In bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt. Using pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until in fine crumbs. Add water; stir with fork just until moistened. Transfer to work surface and press pastry together; knead lightly 5 or 6 times just until dough forms ball. Flatten slightly into disc; wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry into 16-inch (40 cm.) circle, leaving edges rough. Transfer to 12-inch (30 cm) pizza pan, letting pastry hangs over edge. In bowl, toss together rhubarb, sugar, flour and nutmeg. Arrange over pastry; sprinkle with pecans. Fold pastry overhang over filling. Brush pastry with milk. Bake in 425 F (220 C) oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 F (190 C); bake for 35 to 40 minutes longer or until rhubarb is tender and pastry golden. Let cool on rack; dust with icing sugar. 5
