Variety Development and Implications for Australian Wheat Classes Dr Bertus Jacobs LongReach Plant Breeders AGIC Asia 1 March 2016
Introduction LongReach Plant Breeders Wheat Quality across the supply chain Wheat Classes in Australia and what is driving their functionality How do we know what to breed for Breeding for a specific wheat class
LongReach Plant Breeders LongReach Plant Breeders is a commercial wheat breeding business. Established in 2002 is currently a joint venture between Advanta and Syngenta. Develop wheat varieties for Australian domestic and export market. Target all production zones in the Australian wheat belt. LongReach understands the need for breeding programs to respond quickly to market signals. Use advanced technologies to meet market requirements.
Wheat Quality Across the Supply Chain
1. End Users & Customers Use supplied wheat Feedback about quality requirements
2. Market Information Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) Collect information on grain quality, processing, market innovation Feedback to breeders
3. Breeders Develop new varieties Incorporate grower and enduser quality attributes Submit for Classification
4. Classification of varieties Wheat Quality Australia Asses new varieties against biological controls Classification based on end use functionality
5. Growers Deliver grain to receival centres Declare identity of variety on truck
6. Bulk Handlers Variety checked against the Variety Master list Each load tested for receival quality Segregated in relevant grades
7. Traders & Exporters Establish contract specifications according to GTA Wheat Standards Perform pre-shipment quality testing Sample and test shipment to contract specifications

Breeding for a specific wheat class 7 step process Takes 6 years and longer Completed when a Final Classification is awarded
Year 1. Defining the Target Select parents Address all requirements for a successful variety, including yield, disease, agronomy and quality Quality gene combinations considered include: milling quality, protein and lipid composition Make the crosses - about 250 crosses annually
Year 2. Population Development Generate 15 to new breeding lines annually Use two systems: Doubled Haploid and Single Seed Descent Lines
