4 Option 2: Private River of the Kings, Royal Grand Palace and Reclining Buddha (09:00-15:00 hrs.) This morning, you ll be driven to the pier to board a private boat to explore the Thonburi Klongs and the mighty Chao Phraya River (River of Kings). Criss-crossing Bangkok, the complex network of klongs (canals) highlights the traditional Thai way of life that once gave the capital the nickname The Venice of the East. This excursion provides a unique glimpse of how important the city's water network remains in the life of the residents of stilted houses and floating bank barges which line the majestic river. During your cruise, you ll also pass Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), a dramatic temple on the south bank of the Chao Phraya embedded with pieces of multi-coloured porcelain which strikingly reflect the rays of the morning sun. Wat Arun once housed the Emerald Buddha before it was moved across the river to Wat Phra Kaew in 1782 by Rama I. Next, your knowledgeable guide will escort you around the Throne Hall, the Coronation Hall, the Reception Palace and the Funeral Palace as you soak in the regal ambience of the graceful compound. Your guide will then take you to see Wat Phra Kaew (also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) Bangkok's most important and sacred temple. Built at the end of the 18th century by King Rama I, this splendid wat (temple) is a beautiful example of Thai aesthetics and architecture and proudly houses the elegant Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most revered religious image. Though perhaps small in stature, the effigy symbolizes independence and strength and is said to bring good fortune to the nation. Page 4 of 19
5 Later on, take specially arranged Tuk Tuk ride to visit Wat Pho. Page 5 of 19
6 Built by King Rama I nearly 200 years ago, Wat Pho plays host to the gigantic Reclining Buddha (or Phra Buddhasaiyas), a distinctive image covered in gold leaf that lies 150ft long and stands almost 50ft high. Wat Pho is considered the first centre of public education and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, therefore the temple is sometimes referred to as "Thailand's First University". Lunch is served at Babble & Rum Café. Page 6 of 19
