1 2003 Hosta Registrations Thanks, to all who took the time to register cultivars in There were 308 registrations for An updated index is included with this year s new registrations. Registrations are established when printed in a publication that reaches the general public. Other communications, including electronic media, are not considered valid for epithet establishment under the International Code of Nomenclature. The simplified form introduced in June of 1998 resulted in some wide variation in the detail of cultivar descriptions. One significant difference was in the dimensions of the plant. Part of the simplification was to give registrants the option to place their cultivar in a more general category rather than give the specific dimensions. These categories (miniature, small, medium, large, and giant) are somewhat arbitrary. Because of this, dimensional measurements have been utilized when provided, understanding that they reflect clump size at the age recorded. Under parentage information (found within the brackets) the category of parentage unknown was added in As is consistent with the registrar s policy of not adding further to the confusion of the nomenclatural soup, this category is used when the parentage information submitted by the registrant contradicts information already in print. Parentage undetermined does not imply anything regarding the validity of either existing published information or information submitted by the registrant, only that an inconsistency exists. Parentage information published with registrations is intended to be known parentage as opposed to guesses, educated or otherwise. The abbreviation t.c. is used to indicate tissue culture. Brief Key to Descriptions: ONIR: O=originator, N=nominant (Namer), I=introducer, R=registrant. Flowers: Bloom periods are given in either start peak finish format or a more general period format. The general periods are very early period: before June 1, average period: June1 July 15, summer period: July 15 to August 15, late period: August 15 to October 1, very late period: after October 1. Bloom Period Codes: Ties the flowering of the cultivar to a species scale. The registrant has provided the number code from the scale below for the start - peak - finish of the flowering period H. sieboldiana H. ventricosa H. plantaginea H. Tardiflora Forms: Registration forms are available from the registrar, or may be obtained on the Internet at: or at: I welcome inquiries regarding availability or validity of names in advance of the formal submission on registration request forms. Corrections: The spelling Tish is changed to Tisch in the 2002 registrations of American Tish Breeder and Tish. Thanks: The editing of Kevin P. Walek, W. George Schmid, Mark Zilis, and Warren Pollock is acknowledged and greatly appreciated. I am grateful to Lu Treadway Nelson for the use of her database.
