I am here at GES 2014 in Sydney. One of the better trade shows where the best of the best is on display for the industry to see. From large to small plants, new to old and rare to common varieties along with a full range of allied products. There is a lot of positive feeling about the coming few years. The feel of the expo is where we are going with a series of speakers talking about the Garden Centre What will it be like? What will it take to survive until then? What about prospering in the coming decade? Who will be our customers and what will be the decision drivers? The reality is that there will be a big shift in our position. We will not be an industry sector targeted towards post 50 females. Sure there will still be a large number of people to whom the key driver for their garden will be a selection of simply well presented plants. However the dominant... 5 Larkman Nurseries Pty Ltd June Clive s Comments Continued customer will be 25 to 45 year old men and women who see the garden as part of their house. The plants will mostly have home use. Cut flowers, medicinal, culinary, pest control and maybe even beer and wine making. These will be planted around a number of purely ornamental plants that will give structure to the garden. The mass planted estates of Gold Coleonema, Dwarf Nandina, English Box and a handful of Lavender will be a thing of the past. Those who take a tree change and move to the country will be building large formal, free growing perennial or carefree native gardens mixed in with the edibles. The suburbs will have houses that melt into the gardens. Watch all the home renovation shows to see how the kitchen, patio and garden become one. Then inner city will have small boxes or sections in community gardens where they grow their kitchen favourites. The Garden Centre with its dedicated fine food cafe will become the weekend meeting point for the house conscious family. It will provide them with good food, wine and coffee. It will tell them how to grow and prepare the food and it will sell them the plants. I feel that this will be the resurgence of our industry and the independent (or corporate owned independent) will again be the base outlet of green life to the public. It will also see an influx of young minds to the garden as kids spend time with their parents growing their favourite food. Perhaps this is all a bit of a utopia but philosophy is sound. We are entering the Food and Flora era of gardens and nurseries. We are always on the look out for more plants that look good, perform well and are either edible or have another household use. Winter is here and the cool weather slows everything down. In Victoria we are looking at a few slow cold months but Queensland and WA are already seeing the first hints of spring. It is a good time to get many of the quick growing perennials in pots for the late spring sales. A couple of sunny days in July and August will start the sap flowing and as soon as the night time temperatures warm up the plants will take off.
