Less watering stress and also with this mild weather, summer sales have been okay. Like so many other nurseries and primary producers, I worry through most of spring that we are going to have a killer summer and run short of water. When we first bought our Wandin site the bore was producing ample water and even with a leaky dam, water was never an issue. Since then the yield has dropped and we struggle to pull out enough water. So we have lined and deepened the dam, improved the bore pump but it still gets tight on those really hot days. It seems that whatever preventative systems we put in place there are always more needed. We have back up tanks and back up pumps and access to mains water. In 2015 we put in solar for the nursery and separate system for the pumps with a switching system that disconnects us from the main grid when the power drops out. This has been a real relief as we now know that whatever the power does we can water our plants.... Continued on page 4

Solar power has been good for us and I would have liked to have installed it 10 years ago, but whilst we had those crazy feed in tariffs of more than 40cents the prices of the equipment stayed high. This was great for those who only used a small percentage of what they produced but was useless for small businesses that could never produce what they need. Once feed in tariffs dropped so did the installation costs. The limiting factor now is what the power companies will let you have. They limit your generation capacity to the level of their equipment. In our case we need 23KW but the street system can only cope with 14KW so we are limited to that amount unless we store the excess. Next item we want to come down in price is the batteries. With new technology and increasing demand they should come down soon. There is also new switching that will allow us to generate more power that is separate from the grid. With batteries and switches we could reduce the power bill to just base charges and be basically be free of mains power system. Once too many of us do that then the base charges will increase dramatically. All these things cost money and take time to payback and as we get older we must wonder if it is worth it. There are however other benefits, eg: reduction in dealing with utility companies. Becoming less reliant on the power company means less stress in dealing with their phone systems. Every time I ring one of them my blood pressure rises. They must train their staff in how to be so annoying and this new found skill is turning up in more and more businesses. It seems the company owners or senior directors just do not care about their customers. The funny thing is I bet they hate dealing with these types of phone centres when they have issues. So why do they allow their companies to continue with this behaviour? We have reduced water and power usage now I just need to find some way of not having to rely on Telstra. They are the experts in generating frustration amongst customers. As nursery owners we like growing plants and dealing with our customers. We didn t start in the industry to spend most of our time sorting out problems with banks, utility companies and government departments. Some days I sit down at the desk at 7.20am and the next thing I know it is 5pm. So much of what we have to do is not really needed but has to be done to keep some bureaucrat happy. Forms for this and forms for that, signatures here and there. Compare that with the private sector where invoices and statements are sent by with minimal need for extra data entry. I often wonder what percentage of the Australian workforce is self employed, employed in small business, work for large companies, employed in the Public Service or on welfare? We produce and they spend! Anyway 2017 is progressing quickly with one month down already and only 338 days until Christmas. Happy Valentine s Day to all.
