Kids are back at school and the summer shut down seems a year ago. Football season starts and festivals hit Melbourne; Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, Melbourne Comedy Festival, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and our very own Herb and Chilli Festival. There are literally dozens of food festivals in Melbourne during the season. I am sure there also many festivals of similar calibre in the other major cities (eg Carnivale in Port Douglas). They are now part of our ethos. We are a mixed community in Australia with 200 years of immigration from all corners of the world. Over the last 100 we have had waves from different regions and each time it happens the current population feels threatened. Sometimes this is justified and sometimes not. As a non-native born Australian I love our ethnic and cultural diversity. Granted it is mostly in the big cities but I have found some pretty special restaurants in many medium sized towns. A large Korean BBQ in Bundaberg, a real traditional Italian restaurant in Goulburn and a special northern Thai café in Nagambie. Lots of small towns also have huge cultural diversity. A stop on the IPPS International Tour this May is Paronella Park (an hour or so south of Cairns) which is an amazing tribute to a working class Spanish immigrant Jose Paronella. Jose left Spain to come here and build a fortune so he could invite his fiancée Matilda (Interesting Spanish name) to come and build a life together. After a decade plus in and on the sugar cane fields he returned home to find her married to another man. Jose returned and built... Continued on page 4

It is now owned by a new family who are making it their life s work. This is the story of typical Australia. Men and women who worked hard for a vision, didn t look for hand outs and didn t try to manage how and what their neighbours thought. I recently read a story of a man who walked from Sunshine Coast to Sydney to Melbourne to Adelaide and back to Sydney to find a place to build a life. This was early twentieth century and life was hard but the spirit was also hard. Such was life until seventies with people working hard and enjoying life for what it offered. They didn t whinge and complain but addressed the issues and did what they had to for their families. If they had to move home then they did so. It seems a shame that our culture has changed so much. Many of the shifts are rooted in good causes but have failed to make the difference. As a civilised society we must have a safety net for the sick, unemployed, elderly and disabled. The problem is the percentage of people in these groups is far too high. There should be no-one on unemployment in so many parts of Australia. Yes some areas do have high unemployment and no options. Recently I mentioned we have 4000 on the dole in the Yarra Valley. At the same time there would have to be 200 jobs on offer how is this so? I am tired of the phrase working class Australians on minimum wage. The attitude that all they need is a large pay rise and the world will be okay. I am stunned that the concept; if wages go up then prices will go up is not understood by the advocates for huge payrises,. Small businesses have to work on a margin over cost. If the inputs increase the so must the sale price. It is not rocket science or brain surgery. Secondly the biggest cost increases are government controlled: power, water, taxes, rates, superannuation, wages, workers insurance, OH&S etc. They do not come from locally made inputs yet those screaming for pay rises accuse the bosses or exploiting the workers. I read a recent FB post: Stick one in ur bosses arse for those long business lunches. As a small business I don t have those long lunches. Indeed I rarely even get lunch let alone a long lunch. Since when did we become the enemy? Why do the Unions and left wing lawyers keep attacking us? What would they do if we all just sacked our staff and closed the doors? We have so much good in our country that it is disappointing we have this conflict between the thought police who believe they know what is best for everyone and the real Australian who just go about their lives. If it wasn t for the farmers, mechanics, small manufacturers, food processors, trucking companies and similar this country would fall over. The thought police wouldn t have any food on the table. They also wouldn t have the wide choice of products, local restaurants and all sorts of local producers and employers. They wouldn t have a house to live in! As I have said, we live in a good country so let us all work to make it better. Stop complaining and just start buying more plants. They never complain or whinge. Just give them some water and fertiliser and they will return with lots of good growth, flowers and food. They also produce lots of our favourite chemical oxygen.
