A Pavelka collection from stony mountain steppe at 3000m, Pamir, Kyrgyzstan. Acantholimon trojanum Dense, silvery cushions with big rose/pink flowers ~10cm tall; from Kaz Dag, Turkey: 1600m. Sun Achillea aleppica ssp. zederbaueri Tiny dwarf with dense, silver gray leaves to 7cm high; yellow flowers in a thick corymb. Choice and slow growing. Pavelka collection, Ojuklu Dag, Turkey. Achillea clavennae Tufted silver mat of broadly pinnate leaves; clusters of white flowers to 25cm tall. From Julian Alps. Sun Achillea x lewisii 'King Edward' Toothed, wooly, gray-green leaves form mats with 15cm flower stems that bear corms of pale yellow flowers, which age to cream. Adenophora takedae v. howozana Part-sun Campanula relative from Japan; slender arching branches with narrow, toothed leaves. Blue violet bells in very late in August- September; 15cm. Aethionema armenum Compact 10cm evergreen mound of soft pink blooms. Easy to grow and will gently self seed about. Jurasek collection from Turkey. Aethionema ibirideum Sun Part-sun Small growing crucifer with trailing stems forming loose mats; blue gray leaves and maroon stems; pink, fragrant flowers. Aethionema lepidoides Dwarf, subshrub with mahogony coloured stems and narrow, glaucous leaves; dense clusters of fragrant pink flowers. Growing on dry gypsum hills in Turkey, it is perfectly happy with summer drought. Aethionema saxatilis Blue-green, thick (almost succulent like) leaves form a low mat of 10-15cm. Flowers are usually pink, but there is variability with white and mauve as well. Jurasek collection, 1700m Greece. Ajania af. scharnhorstii Interesting little subshrub from dry steppe areas of Pamir, Tajikistan. Finely cut leaves; yellow button like flowers; grows to about 10cm high. Holubec collection. Allium beesianum Very desirable thin leaved petite blue allium for rock garden and trough. A more than welcome bloomer in August and September. Allium chrysanthum Single bursting globe of sunny yellow spikes, held on elegant stem ranging in size from 10-20cm in height. Collections from S.W. China, Qinghai. Allium flavum v. minus Dwarf form from Turkey with umbels of bright yellow flowers; delightfully curled leaves, 12cm.. Sun Allium forrestii A diminutive species growing at 4500m on the rocky slopes of Beima Shan in Yunnan; big red/purple flowers on short stems. Allium kurtzianum Dense pinkish-purple clusters in summer. Grows to just 10cm high; excellent trough specimen. Rare endemic of NW Turkey; Jurasek collection. Allium sp. A very dainty allium with thin green leaves in a neat tuft bearing blue/purple flowers in the autumn until frost. Lacking a name only adds to its allure. 10 cm Alyssum lycaonicum Sun Tiny cushions with delicate pale yellow flowers. A Pavelka collection from gypsum hills at 1500m, Karaman, Turkey. Page 1 of 36

Mostly spring flowering, they do resume growth and blooming from September onwards, staying evergreen through the winter and often flowering through the snow. Is tolerant of heat and cold; very effective in combination with acantholimons and dianthus. Alyssum sp. 'Tahtali Dag' Sun Part-sun From 1800 m in Turkey, a very tiny member of the a. caespitosum group 1-3 cm; miniature silver cushions on woody stems; yellow flowers borne freely throughout the year. Anaphalis depressa Sun Part-sun Dwarf, mat forming with silvery, downy leaves; white straw flowers in June; from Chola Shan, 4800m in Sichuan. A137 Andromeda polifolia Ft. Chimo A collection from northern Canada which has proven to be a good grower; needle like leaves of bluish green; pink flowers; 30cm. A058 Androsace barbulata Thick tufts of woody stems, wooly leaves, white flowers. Sun A216 A139 A155 A118 A150 A010 A154 A065 A162 A188 A014 A189 Androsace globifera Halda collected seed of this species in Upper Burma on Mali Kha in a high alpine pasture (4800m); stemless, bright pink flowers sit atop tight cushions of hairy leaves, resembling a miniature form of a. muscoidea, very choice introduction. Androsace helvetica Sun Very choice, compact cushion to 5cm wide; hairy leaves. White sessile flowers in spring. Not the easiest plant to please. Androsace mariae An exciting collection from Sichuan; dark green cushions; flowers on short scapes range in colour from white to light pink. The expedition photos have pictured some lovely colours, as one collector notes, "all forms are very good plants." Androsace muscoidea Silvery green, stoloniferous mats; stemless lavender flowers; from drier regions of the Himalaya. Sun Androsace ovczinikovii Dense, silvery cushions with heads of fragrant, white flowers often reblooming in September. A Halda collection at 3100m from the Gobi Desert side of the Mongolian Altai. We have grown this species in the garden for many years. It is one of the best and is very drought tolerant. Androsace primuloides 'Sheppard' Sun Part-sun Large vigorous plant with many gray-green rosettes of elliptic leaves, each one producing, in May, a compact umbel of pink flowers with a yellow eye, lovely where given the room to form a solid carpet. Androsace sarmentosa Sun Part-sun From a wild collection at 3300m, Garwal. Soft cushions of lonate leaves, rose/pink flowers with a dark eye; spreads into larger mats. Androsace sempervivoides A neat, mat forming species with deep green, succulent leaves. Bright pink flowers on short stems. Androsace tangulashanensis Tiny, tiny rosettes in dense clusters; stemless, white flowers; choice. From 4300m on Huashixia, Quinghai. Sun Part-sun Sun Androsace tapete From 4800m Kangding, Sechuan, a very tiny contour forming mat to 15 cm wide eventually with white flowers; perfect trough specimen. Androsace villosa v. jacquemontii Part-sun Originally from Ota Vlasak, this collection is stoloniferous and mat forming, but slow. Flowers are a vivid red-purple with greenish yellow eyes, quite striking. Androsace x 'millstream' Linc Foster's selection of a tiny garden seedling with dark green leaves and pink flowers. Sun A098 Anemone parviflora Dark green, basal leaves; short stems bearing bluish/white flowers. Sun Part-sun A270 A145 Anemone rupicola Sun Part-sun Deeply lobed leaves which are dark green and shiny - as though they just came through a spring rain. Stunning large (4-6cm) single white blooms. Growing to 15cm tall in rich meadows from the Himalaya to western China, this is a very showy plant. Nodding opalescent flowers resemble a cross between an anemone and a fuchsia, with light violet waxy outer sepals and an inner cup of infused deep violet. From woodland areas in central Honshu, Japan. Grown from a thick packet of seed Barrie Porteous sent! Antennaria aromatica Mats of congested shoots with small, wooly, ash-gray leaves which have a distinctive citronella fragrance; white flowers with pink bracts. Native to the dry screes and gravelly flats of the Upper Beartooth, 3200m; Ratko collection. Excellent trough specimen. Antennaria dioica 'nyewoods' A fine pink flowered form. Makes dense carpets of green and silver. Sun Part-sun A015 Antennaria sp. (Beartooth collection) Silver mat of geometrical leaves, very tight; white folwers. Sun Antirrhinum hispanicum - white This hardy white selection of the "Spanish snapdragon" is both tidy and floriferous, blooming all summer long. Rounded grey leaves are heavily felted and evergreen throughout the winter. Likes it hot and dry; 20cm high. Aquilegia alpina A compact plant from the Alps that grows to about a foot high with many large 5-8cm purple blooms. Sun Part-sun Aquilegia canadensis 'nana' Sun Part-sun A genetically fixed form of this wide-spread Eastern NA species, growing to 15 cm tall, adorned with the bright tangerine-red and yellow flowers. Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila Sun Part-sun Bells of violet blue and creamy white; compact at 15cm high, "Dwarf Fan Shaped Columbine"; easy to please. Aquilegia hybrid Porteous Sun Part-sun Large, fully purple blooms; plant forms a tidy and compact mound at 15-30cm high. From Barrie Porteous' garden. Aquilegia jonesii A fabled plant with incredibly blue flowers in late April, set just on the leaves. It likes a gravelly limestone soil with a boost of fertilizer in the spring, which very much encourages it to bloom. Aquilegia scopulorum Sun High alpine plant from Nevada; grows in limestone screes; very small, 8cm. With long-spurred blue flowers; very choice. Aquilegia viridiflora Sun Part-sun Intriguing for it's odd flower colours: green sepals and maroon/brown spurs. Jurasek collection from Gansu, China at 2500m. Aquilegia x micrantha Sun Part-sun Hybrid collection from Colorado. Having the sticky leaves of a. micrantha, but the yellow corolla and peach coloured spurs speak of a. elegantula. Arabis bryoides Sun Part-sun Tidy, tight cushion of heavily tomentose leaves giving it a soft appearance. Covered in white flowers in spring. Arabis ferdinandi-cobourgii variegata Waxy leaves with a yellow/green variegation. Useful mat-forming species; white flowers. Sun Part-sun Arabis x suendermannii Sun Part-sun A lovely mat forming species from Rick Lupp with overlapping rosettes of elongated, lustrous green leaves; small white flowers. The visual texture of the mat is beautiful and unusual, especially for an arabis. Arctostaphylos uva ursi 'Wood's Red' Excellent dwarf form. Mats of dark green leaves. Delicate pink lanterns followed by red fruits. Sun Arenaria drypedia Sun Part-sun Leaves arranged in a columnar fashion on short stems producing tight, globose cushions; somewhat like an acantholimon- an adaptation to cold dry conditions; white flowers with red spots; from Ercias Dag, Turkey at 2400m. Arenaria obtusiloba Mats of trailing stems with tufts of short needles. White blooms in late spring to early summer. Alplains collection from Albany Co., WY, 3310m. Page 3 of 36

4 A025 A095 A228 A051 Arenaria tetraquetra Dense, hard green mat of tetragonus leaves; many white, stem-less flowers in May. Use as a mat to intergrow with something larger such as dianthus or bulbs. Arenaria tetraquetra ssp. granatensis One of the tightest mats I have seen; ground hugging little hummocks of light green and gold; especially attractive growing on tufa. The white flowers are stemless ~1cm wide. Excellent for combining with other mats or to use as a ''dry'' underplant for bulbs or a small alpine campanula, gentian or primula. Arenaria 'Turkish Frost' Sun Part-sun Grown from seed from a Czech collection in Turkey, this is not keyed out, but is so good that it must be listed. Narrow blades of grey/green form a dwarf, soft mound; many white flowers with distinctive purple striping are borne in the heat of summer making a valued addition at this time of year; 6cm. Arenaria Wallowa Mts Solid hummocks with white flowers on 1 inch stems. A very tight, wonderful cushion. Sun Part-sun A029 A030 Armeria juniperifolia 'Alba' Sun A white flowered version with more glaucous leaves and condensed habit. It does best in very dry sand and full sun. Armeria juniperifolia 'Bevans' Sun Part-sun A diminutive form, very compact making the cushion almost hard. Stemless rose pink pompoms cover it in early spring. A046 Armeria maritima 'rubrifolia' Striking maroon coloured leaves; a deep pink flower on 12cm stems. Sun A049 A181 A056 Armeria x 'Little Penny' A tiny armeria with stemless crimson pink flowers on a tight mound of red-purple foliage. Sun Artemisia frigida A high collection ~3300m, Utah; small woody crowned shrub with spreading branches of silvery blue/gray foliage; flowers are small yellow discs on 10cm stems. Artemisia pedemontana v. assoana White, wooly mats, perfect to fill a vertical crevice. Yellow flower heads in June; 5cm; trough. Sun A193 Artemisia 'tiny green' Unusual mat of green filigreed leaves in tiny marble sized balls. Sun Part-sun A222 A032 A079 A239 A044 A063 A172 A240 Aruncus aethusifolius Sun Part-sun Shade $ 7 Native to Japan and Korea; low mounds of finely divided leaves with airy plumes of white flowers over a long period; tolerates dry, shaded sites. Asarina procumbens compacta $ 7 Miniature form with large flowers, all summer long. Trailing stems make it ideal for the edge of a trough or over the side of a wall. Asclepias asperula Leaves are pale green, narrow and twisting; terminal flowers have purple hoods over yellow/green petals. Unusual as the stems lie prostrate; grows on lean, dry calcareous gravel. Alplains collection from Cache Co., UT, 1463m. Asperula boissieri 'killini' From Mojmir Pavelka, who provided our original collection of a. boissieri back in 1994 from Parnassus. From the Killini Mts. in Greece, this collection is much more compact in character. Tiny silvery leaves with a hint of blue, rose-coloured flowers set close to the cushions. This is arguably the best dwarf asperula; 2cm. Asperula gussonii Frosted hard dome topped with long tubular pink flowers. Asperula pontica Sun Sun Dense cushion of green curls with a touch of frost on the margins. Long tubes of dark pink; excellent for crevice or trough. Asphodeline taurica Sun Part-sun Long, thin leaves errupting from the base of a thickened stock. The 40cm high flower spikes carry hundreds of stemless white flowers; an accent plant popular with garden visitors. Aster asterioides Dwarf, tufted plant of West China and Tibet, ~ 6cm. tall; short sprays of lilac/blue flowers. Sun Part-sun Page 4 of 36

Aster dumosus 'Woods' Purple' Sun Tidy 30cm mound, multitude of purple flowers with yellow centres in late summer to early fall. Disease resistant. A173 Aster 'Hein Richard' Hot magenta blooms from August to September. Only ~20cm tall. Sun Part-sun A207 A036 A043 A208 A314 A039 Aster mongolicus Sun Part-sun A Josef Halda collection from the 2700m in Altai Mts. bordering the Gobi Desert. Short tufts of gray/green leaves amongst dolomitic rocks; large lavender/blue flowers on short stems, at ~6cm. Suitable for a trough. Astilbe sim. 'Willy Buchanan' Very low with sharply toothed leaves; pale pink flowers. Sun Part-sun Shade $ 7 Astragalus angustifolius Received from Fred Case, this woody plant makes an excellent mat of silver divided leaves and white pea flowers. Easy to grow,and excellent draped over rocks. Asyneuma limonifolium ssp. lim. Dense tufts of narrowly oblong leaves with spikes of densely packed blue flowers to 15 cm tall. Sun Part-sun Asyneuma linifolium Basal linear-lanceolate leaves spread beneath 10-15cm spikes adorning purple star like flowers. A subtle beauty a close up look will bring delight! Jurasek collection from Dedegol Dag, Turkey; 2200m. Aubrieta gracilis Mats of tiny green leaves; profuse, purple flowers in May. A040 Aubrieta x marjorie Large mat of gray-green leaves; bright magenta flowers. A265 B012 B013 B005 C225 C210 Azorella trifurcata Ground hugging mats of hard, rubbery foliage. Tiny yellow/green flowers sit on the carpet. Besseya wyomingensis Delightful purple 'kittentails' on woolly spikes in early spring. Alplains collection from steep east facing limestone slope; Teton Co., MT, 2348m. Bukiniczia cabulica Basal rosette (20cm across) of gorgeous round blue-green mottled leaves. From 3000m up in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan, it s always a surprise that this isn t a tender succulent. Branches of papery statice flowers; a worthy monocarpic for the beautiful leaf form. Buxus microphyllus (dwarf) Sun Part-sun Recieved from Harry Elkins this is a tiny dense evergreen with shiny green leaves about 2cm long. Grows only 2cm/yr. Calluna vulgaris 'Annapolis Mist' Sun Part-sun Low growing (10cm) dark green spreader - a sweet chance seedling from Bunchberry Nursery in Nova Scotia; lots of lavender flowers. Calluna vulgaris 'Annemarie' Dark green heather with double rose/pink flowers; grow in full sun and sandy soil with lots of peat. Sun Part-sun C216 Calluna vulgaris 'Anthony Davis' Long sprays of white flowers over gray/green mats. Low spreading habit. Sun Part-sun C211 C215 C227 Calluna vulgaris 'County Wicklow' Sun Part-sun This lovely floriferous shell pink double heather blooms from August through to October. Bright green compact foliage spreads but stays low at 25cm. A 1930's introduction from County Wicklow, Ireland. Calluna vulgaris 'Devon' Double pink, grows to 20cm high. Dwarf, dark green heather growing to just 15cm high. Needs to be planted in an acidic bed. Calluna vulgaris 'John F Letts' Only 10cm tall mat, with lavender blooms through autumn. Foliage is quite attractive with tonal changes throughout the seasons - from gold in summer to bronzey reds in winter. Calluna vulgaris 'Martha Hermann' Bright green foliage; white flowers with a shade of lilac sprout to 20cm high from late summer to early fall. Found near Loch Fryne, Argylle Scotland during the 1930's. Campanula 'Blithe Spirit' Sun Part-sun Delightfully compact with white blooms so fully open they can hardly be called 'bells'. Seedling of C. Maie Blyth raised by Lesley Cox. Campanula carpatica 'Pearl White' A wonderfully compact form with delicate leaves. Lots of cute shimmering white bells on short stems. Sun Part-sun Campanula chamissonis Sun Part-sun A species from Japan to Kamchatka and over to Aleutian Is. Bright green clumps of leaves on slowly speading rhizomes; blue, single flowers with white hairs; for a moist scree or trough. Campanula choruhensis Gray-green leaves; huge ivory bells tipped with pink; from Turkey. Part-sun Campanula ciliata Part-sun A Caucasian species from ~ 2000m, taproot topped with leathery, narrowly lanceolate leaves, solitary campanula bells, 8 cm high. Campanula coch. 'Elizabeth Oliver' Sun Part-sun Tiny mat former, slender rhizomes with small rounded leaves; in this form the flowers are double and pale blue. Campanula fenestrellata Similar to c. garganica but more compact; doubly toothed leaves; blue flowers; 10cm. Campanula linifolia 'Alba' Sun Part-sun White form of this popular species which resembles a larger c. rotundifolia; very beautiful in bloom as the flowers sway in the wind. Spikes are covered in what seems like a million upward facing pale yellow (yes, yellow) flowers. At about 30cm tall it makes quite a statement in group plantings (or reseedings). Campanula x 'Mai Blyth' Tiny mounds of crinkled leaves; huge, open dark blue flowers that are particularly eye-catching. Sun Part-sun Campanula x 'Tiny Tim' Part-sun A minute purple bellflower that we haven t the slightest idea of it s origin most likely a lovely gift from a friend. Very contained, perfect for a trough. Centaurea sp. Apuane Dwarf tufted perennial, slightly fuzzy green leaves, several violet-purple flowers. 5-10cm. Pavelka collection 1700m, Apuane Alps, Italy. Ceratostigma minus Dwarf shrub 15-30cm wide, gentian blue flowers with striking red calyces. Small, thick lanceolate leaves. Cheers up the garden in late summer through autumn. Holubec collection Lhasa, Tibet, 3700m on a dry rocky slope. Chaenorrhinum glareosum Sun Part-sun Our own selection, forms a delightful mat of dark green, tiny round leaves; dark lilac flowers with a yellow palate blooms over a long period. Chamaecyparis pisifera squarrosa intermedia Silvery-blue, compact false cyprus. Grows to 50cm in 10 years. Sun Part-sun C089 Chamaecyparis pisifera Tsukomo A dwarf form with fine foliage laced with snow. Chamaecytisus polytrichus Beautiful ground hugging shrub, even the brilliant yellow flowers seem to rest on the earth. Tiny green leaves with white edges on 10cm procumbent stems. This has become a favourite in our garden, even when not in bloom. Jurasek collection, Galicia, Macedonia; 2000m. Chrysanthemum weyrichii Sun Part-sun Clump forming with shiny green divided leaves; large pink flowers on 10cm stems from August to October. This particular form is slower and more compact; from Hokkaido, Japan. Cistus albanicus Sun A Pavelka collection from 1500m on Burrel, Albania. Dwarf subshrub to 25 cm tall, large white flowers in May. Clematis aff. akebioides Sun Part-sun Woody vines, pinnate leaves. Outer petals are reddish-purple, while inside is soft yellow. Jurasek collection from Sichuan, Maniganggo, 3800m. Clematis fremontii Lovely little herbaceous clematis growing to 35cm tall; leathery leaves; nodding, urns of lavender-blue outside, pale green within. Similar culture as c. integrifolia, i.e. a sunny scree. Clematis integrifolia Non-climbing, erect stems to 40cm.; large blue flowers make a grand display in June followed by equally attractive, fluffy seed heads. Clematis sp. But it s the silver fern like foliage below that really catches the eye for the rest of the growing season. Holubec collection from mountain grasslands of Varzob, Hissar, Tajikistan; 2000m. Helianthemum (light orange seedling) A garden sleeding we brought along from Kerwood. Not sure of the parentage, but it grew between the red, orange and yellows, making a colour of it's own.
