Finely cut leaves; yellow button like flowers; grows to about 10cm high. Holubec collection. Alcea nudiflora Sun Delicate yet showy white hollyhock with sunny yellow centre. Grows to about 80cm. Pavelka collection from Tian-Shan, Kyrgyzstan. Allium beesianum Sun Trough Very desirable thin leaved petite blue allium for rock garden and trough. A more than welcome bloomer in August and September. Allium flavum v. minus Dwarf form from Turkey with umbels of bright yellow flowers; delightfully curled leaves, 12cm.. Sun Trough Allium forrestii Sun Trough A diminutive species growing at 4500m on the rocky slopes of Beima Shan in Yunnan; big red/purple flowers on short stems. Allium kurtzianum Sun Trough $ 10 Dense pinkish-purple clusters in summer. Grows to just 10cm high; excellent trough specimen. Rare endemic of NW Turkey; Jurasek collection. Allium sp. Sun Trough A very dainty allium with thin green leaves in a neat tuft bearing blue/purple flowers in the autumn until frost. Lacking a name only adds to its allure. 10 cm Alyssum propinquum Sun Trough Condensed mats of gray/green leaves and stems. Mostly spring flowering, they do resume growth and blooming from September onwards, staying evergreen through the winter and often flowering through the snow. Is tolerant of heat and cold; very effective in combination with acantholimons and dianthus. Alyssum sp. 'Tahtali Dag' Sun Part-sun Trough From 1800 m in Turkey, a very tiny member of the a. caespitosum group 1-3 cm; miniature silver cushions on woody stems; yellow flowers borne freely throughout the year. Anacyclus depressus Sun $ 7 For one of the 'easy to grow' alpines out there, the Mount Atlas Daisy is a pleasing one that will self seed in your garden. Mats of ferny grey-green foliage covered in daises with cherry red reverse sides to their petals, making the buds attractively red too! Anaphalis depressa Sun Dwarf, mat forming with silvery, downy leaves; white straw flowers in June; from Chola Shan, 4800m in Sichuan. Andromeda polifolia Ft. Sun Trough $ 7 A119 A216 A139 A118 Androsace bisulca v. aurata Sun Trough Spiky, tight cushions of gray/green; large golden flowers on short stems. A wonderful new introduction from Sichuan, China. Androsace globifera Sun Trough Halda collected seed of this species in Upper Burma on Mali Kha in a high alpine pasture (4800m); stemless, bright pink flowers sit atop tight cushions of hairy leaves, resembling a miniature form of a. muscoidea, very choice introduction. Androsace helvetica Sun Trough Very choice, compact cushion to 5cm wide; hairy leaves. White sessile flowers in spring. Not the easiest plant to please. A Halda collection at 3100m from the Gobi Desert side of the Mongolian Altai. We have grown this species in the garden for many years. It is one of the best and is very drought tolerant. Androsace primuloides 'Sheppard' Sun Part-sun Large vigorous plant with many gray-green rosettes of elliptic leaves, each one producing, in May, a compact umbel of pink flowers with a yellow eye, lovely where given the room to form a solid carpet. Sun Trough Androsace sarmentosa Sun Part-sun $ 7 From a wild collection at 3300m, Garwal. Soft cushions of lonate leaves, rose/pink flowers with a dark eye; spreads into larger mats. Androsace sempervivoides A neat, mat forming species with deep green, succulent leaves. Bright pink flowers on short stems. Androsace tangulashanensis Tiny, tiny rosettes in dense clusters; stemless, white flowers; choice. From 4300m on Huashixia, Quinghai. Sun Part-sun $ 7 Sun Trough Androsace tapete Sun Trough From 4800m Kangding, Sechuan, a very tiny contour forming mat to 15 cm wide eventually with white flowers; perfect trough specimen. Androsace villosa v. jacquemontii Part-sun Trough Originally from Ota Vlasak, this collection is stoloniferous and mat forming, but slow. Flowers are a vivid red-purple with greenish yellow eyes, quite striking. Androsace x 'millstream' Linc Foster's selection of a tiny garden seedling with dark green leaves and pink flowers. Sun Trough Anemone ranunculoides Part-sun From woody, rhizomatous roots emerge short stems with trilobed leaves, yellow flowers on short stalks. Grow in dry woodland. Anemone rupicola Sun Part-sun Deeply lobed leaves which are dark green and shiny - as though they just came through a spring rain. Stunning large (4-6cm) single white blooms. Growing to 15cm tall in rich meadows from the Himalaya to western China, this is a very showy plant. Anemone x lesseri A garden origin hybrid with shiny green, palmate leaves, to 15cm tall; many rose flowers about 2cm across. Sun Antennaria aromatica Sun Trough Mats of congested shoots with small, wooly, ash-gray leaves which have a distinctive citronella fragrance; white flowers with pink bracts. Native to the dry screes and gravelly flats of the Upper Beartooth, 3200m; Ratko collection. Excellent trough specimen. Antennaria dioica 'nyewoods' A fine pink flowered form. Sun Trough This has been a mystery to us, we can't even remember where it came from. A dwarf woody/shrubby grower with white daises. Light green pinnate leaves. Very hardy. Anthyllis montana Sun Part-sun From a Czech expedition to Cvrsnica Mt. in Bosnia; low, compact cushions of grey/green; light pink flowers on short stems that hug the earth; 8cm. Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. atlantis Sun Part-sun A wide ranging, quite variable species that in this form produces creeping scapes of white, lanate leaves and very attractive raspberry red/white flowers; from 2300m in the Sierra Nevada, Spain. 3 A275 A234 A287 Antirrhinum hispanicum - white Sun This hardy white selection of the "Spanish snapdragon" is both tidy and floriferous, blooming all summer long. Rounded grey leaves are heavily felted and evergreen throughout the winter. Likes it hot and dry; 20cm high. Aquilegia canadensis 'nana' Sun Part-sun Trough A genetically fixed form of this wide-spread Eastern NA species, growing to 15 cm tall, adorned with the bright tangerine-red and yellow flowers. Arabis bryoides Sun Part-sun Trough Tidy, tight cushion of heavily tomentose leaves giving it a soft appearance. Covered in white flowers in spring. Useful mat-forming species; white flowers. Arabis x suendermannii Sun Part-sun Trough A lovely mat forming species from Rick Lupp with overlapping rosettes of elongated, lustrous green leaves; small white flowers. The visual texture of the mat is beautiful and unusual, especially for an arabis. Arctostaphylos uva ursi 'Wood's Red' Excellent dwarf form. Mats of dark green leaves. Delicate pink lanterns followed by red fruits. Sun Arenaria drypedia Sun Part-sun Trough $ 7 Leaves arranged in a columnar fashion on short stems producing tight, globose cushions; somewhat like an acantholimon- an adaptation to cold dry conditions; white flowers with red spots; from Ercias Dag, Turkey at 2400m. Arenaria hookeri Dense cushions of short, green needles; for sunny, dry conditions; white flowers. Sun Part-sun Trough $ 7 Arenaria tetraquetra Sun Trough $ 7 Dense, hard green mat of tetragonus leaves; many white, stem-less flowers in May. Use as a mat to intergrow with something larger such as dianthus or bulbs. Arenaria tetraquetra ssp. granatensis Sun Trough One of the tightest mats I have seen; ground hugging little hummocks of light green and gold; especially attractive growing on tufa. The white flowers are stemless ~1cm wide. Excellent for combining with other mats or to use as a ''dry'' underplant for bulbs or a small alpine campanula, gentian or primula. Arenaria 'Turkish Frost' Sun Part-sun Trough $ 7 Grown from seed from a Czech collection in Turkey, this is not keyed out, but is so good that it must be listed. Narrow blades of grey/green form a dwarf, soft mound; many white flowers with distinctive purple striping are borne in the heat of summer making a valued addition at this time of year; 6cm. Arenaria Wallowa Mts Solid hummocks with white flowers on 1 inch stems. A very tight, wonderful cushion. Armeria juniperifolia 'Alba' Sun Part-sun Trough $ 7 Sun Trough A white flowered version with more glaucous leaves and condensed habit. It does best in very dry sand and full sun. Armeria juniperifolia 'Bevans' Sun Part-sun Trough A diminutive form, very compact making the cushion almost hard. Stemless rose pink pompoms cover it in early spring. Armeria scabra ssp. sibirica Sun Trough $ 7 An odditiy from the middle Rockies found on drier areas of alpine tundra; flat tufts of short, grassy leaves; opalescent spheres on short 10cm stems. Armeria x 'Little Penny' A tiny new armeria with stemless crimson pink flowers on a tight mound of red-purple foliage. Sun Trough Arnebia echioides Sun Part-sun $ 15 A perennial borage with tufts of hairy dark green leaves. Short stems bearing sulphur yellow 5 -petalled flowers, each with a distinctive brown dot. A standout for a rocky scree. Artemisia frigida Sun A high collection ~3300m, Utah; small woody crowned shrub with spreading branches of silvery blue/gray foliage; flowers are small yellow discs on 10cm stems. Asarina procumbens compacta Sun Trough $ 7 Miniature form with large flowers, all summer long. Trailing stems make it ideal for the edge of a trough or over the side of a wall. A044 Asperula gussonii Frosted hard dome topped with long tubular pink flowers. The 40cm high flower spikes carry hundreds of stemless white flowers; an accent plant popular with garden visitors. Aster alpinus Clumps of green leaves. 5cm violet-blue flowers held on 15cm stems. 'Willy Buchanan' Very low with sharply toothed leaves; pale pink flowers. Sun Part-sun Shade $ 6 Astragalus angustifolius Sun $ 7 Received from Fred Case, this woody plant makes an excellent mat of silver divided leaves and white pea flowers. Easy to grow,and excellent draped over rocks. Aubrieta gracilis Mats of tiny green leaves; profuse, purple flowers in May. A040 B002 Aubrieta x marjorie Large mat of gray-green leaves; bright magenta flowers. Bolax glebaria nana The dwarf form of bolax glebaria. Calceolaria arachnoidea Sun Part-sun Dark plum slippers stunningly contrast with heavily felted grey leaves. Flowers held 15-20cm high. Blooms quite happily from late spring to mid summer. Hardiness is suggested to go to as low as -15C to -20C; perhaps tender for some gardens. Calceolaria falklandica Sun Part-sun Trough A form of c. biflora, this species makes neat litle clumps of elliptical leaves with prominent linear veins. Short stems carry inflated, rich yellow pouches. Likes a gravelly, moist soil with humus; small enough for a trough. Calceolaria luxurians Sun Part-sun Trough Hairy, round leaves with a jagged margin; large yellow flowers distinctively pouch shaped - unusual and attractive. This collection is from stream sides in Mendoza, Argentina at high altitude (3100m). Grow in part sun in a moist, gravelly soil Calluna vulgaris 'Annapolis Mist' Sun Part-sun Low growing (10cm) dark green spreader - a sweet chance seedling from Bunchberry Nursery in Nova Scotia; lots of lavender flowers. Calluna vulgaris 'Fire Star' Mauve flowers in August and September; brilliant yellow/orange foliage. Grows up to 30cm. Tiny mauve flowers hug the stems in summer. Calluna vulgaris 'Foxii Nana' Diminutive heather (10-15cm tall) with tidy dense foliage. Mauve flowers in fall. Sun Trough Calluna vulgaris 'J.H. Hamilton' Sun Part-sun Deep pink double flowers late in the summer. Dwarf, dark green heather growing to just 15cm high. Needs to be planted in an acidic bed. Calluna vulgaris 'Rock Spray' Sun Part-sun Another lovely heather from Bunchberry Nursery; deep pink flowers on 20cm stems; woody spread of dark green foliage. Calluna vulgaris 'White Lawn' Sun Part-sun This heather only grows sideways. Completely prostrate light green stems with single white flowers. Found near Loch Fryne, Argylle Scotland during the 1930's. Campanula ardonensis Compact cushions of bright green leaves; medium sized flowers of rich purple/violet; to 10cm. Sun Part-sun Trough Campanula betulifolia Sun Part-sun Trough Tufted Turkish species with prominently toothed leaves. In June, large bell shaped flowers, pink to red in bud, open white; spectacular when allowed to splay over rocks; easy to grow. Campanula 'Blithe Spirit' Sun Part-sun Trough Delightfully compact with white blooms so fully open they can hardly be called 'bells'. Seedling of C. Maie Blyth raised by Lesley Cox. Campanula bornmuelleri Sun Part-sun Trough $ 10 In Kerwood we grew this plant for more than 10 years in a vertical crevice in one of our dry walls, much the same condition as it experiences in nature. It can also be grown in a deep gravelly scree, of low organic content with a supplemental feeding. Succulent dentate leaves arranged in basal rosettes; short stocks of angular violet bells; quite different from other campanulas and very heat and drought tolerant; small enough for trough. Campanula carpatica 'Pearl White' A wonderfully compact form with delicate leaves. Lots of cute shimmering white bells on short stems. Sun Campanula chamissonis Sun Part-sun Trough A species from Japan to Kamchatka and over to Aleutian Is. Bright green clumps of leaves on slowly speading rhizomes; blue, single flowers with white hairs; for a moist scree or trough. Campanula coch. 'Elizabeth Oliver' Sun Tiny mat former, slender rhizomes with small rounded leaves; in this form the flowers are double and pale blue. Campanula fenestrellata Similar to c. garganica but more compact; doubly toothed leaves; blue flowers; 10cm. Campanula x 'Mai Blyth' Tiny mounds of crinkled leaves; huge, open dark blue flowers that are particularly eye-catching. Sun C014 C066 C202 Campanula zoysii Sun Part-sun Trough $ 25 Oversized blue flowers, having a distinctive pouch appearance erupt on short stems over a dense mat of tiny green leaves. Classic and desirable trough specimen - these come already planted in a tufa rock. Centaurea drabifolia Sun Trough Small tufted species with dentate leathery leaves and white tomentum. Spiny, yellow flowers on short decumbent stems. Long lived and very attractive in a hot, sunny site. Centaurea parilica Sun Part-sun A Pavelka collection from1800m on Alibotish, Bulgaria; woody stems with blue/silver, 10 cm tall; flowers on this species are a bright pink/purple, almost as attractive as c. achtarovii, but the plant is much easier to grow. Ceratostigma minus Sun Dwarf shrub 15-30cm wide, gentian blue flowers with striking red calyces. Small, thick lanceolate leaves. Cheers up the garden in late summer through autumn. Holubec collection Lhasa, Tibet, 3700m on a dry rocky slope. Chaenorrhinum glareosum Sun Part-sun Trough Our own selection, forms a delightful mat of dark green, tiny round leaves; dark lilac flowers with a yellow palate blooms over a long period. Chamaecyparis pisifera Tsukomo A dwarf form with fine foliage laced with snow. Sun Part-sun Trough Chrysanthemum hosmariense Sun Narrow, silvery, trifid leaves; large (4cm) white flowers with prominent silvery bracts, edged with black. A handsome, much appreciated plant that provides the much sought after white autumn flowers. Chrysanthemum weyrichii Sun Part-sun $ 7 Clump forming with shiny green divided leaves; large pink flowers on 10cm stems from August to October. This particular form is slower and more compact; from Hokkaido, Japan. Cistus albanicus Sun A Pavelka collection from 1500m on Burrel, Albania. Dwarf subshrub to 25 cm tall, large white flowers in May. Hardy to zone 5 (USDA). Clematis aff. akebioides Sun Part-sun $ 10 Woody vines, pinnate leaves. Sun Part-sun $ 10 Convolvulus compactus Sun Trough $ 12 Choice, dwarf, cushion forming mats of woody stems, gray leaves with silver fur. Huge white or light pink flowers; beautiful in the garden or a trough. Convolvulus suendermanii Sun Trough $ 12 A member of the c. compactus group, growing in Slavjanko, Bulgaria; raised from a rarely offered seed collection by Jurasek. Silvery leaves on compact plants with white or pink flowers. Coprosma petriei Sun Trough $ 12 Crowded, dense, absolutely flat mats of dark green leaves; slow spreadeing. Flowers are small but the fruits are delightful pearls of translucent and lustrous blue. From New Zealand and has survived many years in a zone 4, Muskoka garden; a real gem. Cyclamen coum ssp. caucasicum Part-sun $ 10 Deep green heart shaped leaves with an inner ring of mint. Beautiful pink flowers with dark purple eye. Jurasek collection; Pont Alps, Turkey; 1700m. Cymbalaria aequitriloba Carpet of small purple-pink snapdragons all summer. Rounded leaves, softly hairy. Sun Part-sun Shade $ 7 D127 D074 D001 D170 Daphne blagayana Sun Part-sun Shade $ 20 A low spreading shrub growing in humusy, rocky soils from the Balkans to Transylvania. Forms large mats a yard wide. Crowded terminal heads of white flowers with an intense fragrance. This is a first rate daphne that is not offered very often. Thanks to Barrie Porteous for the cutting material! Daphne cneorum 'Porteous' Sun Part-sun Trough $ 20 A form received from Barrie Porteous with tiny leaves and a ground hugging habit which follows the contours of underlying rocks. The wood is a particularly attractive mahogany colour; profusion of intensely fragrant pink flowers in May-June. This is very similar in appearance to the d. cneorum pygmaea, clone B described by Robin White in his recent 'Daphnes Guide'. Daphne cneorum 'Pygmaea Alba' Dense mat about 7cm high; completely covered in scented white flowers. Daphne cneorum verlotti x d. arbuscula A very compact form that favours the d. arbuscula parent; lots of bright pink flowers.
