It sends out pumps, both near the plants base and several feet away on rhizomes so give this plant some room. Plant in full sun in a well drained soil and irrigate very little. This plant needs to be grown where temperatures do not drop below 25 F or even below 27 F for extended periods so it is likely limited to southern California coastal areas or the low desert. This is the plant used in the Jalisco, Mexico as the base ingredient of the distilled spirit called Tequila where it has been cultivated since before the Spanish arrived. Other products derived from this plant include aguamiel and pulque. It is considered a domesticated species without any wild populations known to exist. In Jalisco this plant is grown in well drained soils at moderate altitudes of 4,500 feet or higher. And the plant is commonly called Tequila Agave or Weber's Blue Agave Produced from tissue culture after seed selection of the best clone was determined by Jerry Hunter. This selection is thought to be a Japanese cultivar of Agave potatorum and is highly sought after. Little irrigation is required in coastal gardens, but it is best to provide some supplemental irrigation in hotter inland gardens. It is cold hardy to around 25 degrees. Agave potatorum comes from the semi-arid highlands, in the altitudes between 4,000 and 7,000 feet in Puebla and Oaxaca Mexico. This cultivar resembles a diminutive form of the species but some consider it to be a form of Agave parryi. (AGA1031) AGAVE pelona 'Excalibur' The dense rosette of narrow, toothless leaves is dark bluegreen, 2 to 4 feet ( m) across. A long reddish spine tips each leaf. Since they do not cluster, the singular rosettes are very symmetrical. Mature size: 4-5 feet high and 6-8 feet wide. (AGA1034) AGAVE Parryi Truncata Produced from tissue culture this hardy agave is a spectacular addition to any garden or pot. Perfect for sustainable yards striving for drought tolerant status. Agave parryi var. truncata - A compact rosette-forming succulent with broad, short, squared-off blue-gray leaves which have prominent reddish-brown teeth and terminal spines. Individual plants grow to 2 to 3 feet tall by 3 to 4 feet wide. When the plants are mature, a flower spike rises 10 to 20 feet bearing orange buds that open yellow - flowering usually occurs in summer. Plant in full sun. It requires very little to no irrigation in coastal gardens and is hardy to around 15 F. This agave, native from Durango to Zacatecas Mexico, is very attractive in the succulent garden as a large specimen plant or in large pots. It is often noted to be smaller than Agave parryi var. huachucensis, but in our experience this is one of the larger of the Agave parryi varieties. It is quite notable for its stubby, almost flat-topped rosettes that are somewhat reminiscent of an artichoke Zones 9-11 full sun. (AGA1027) AGAVE parrasana 'Globe' Incredibly water wise and cold hardy, this non-clumping rosette Agave parrasana displays beautiful blue color and striking foliage shape.
