What are seedlings, transplants, rooted clumps and dormant plants? A seedling is a bare root tree or shrub. We carry one, two and three year seedlings, depending on if it s a conifer, hardwood or shrub. Seedlings are shipped while dormant, without a root ball or soil, but are covered in a moist material or root dipped to retain moisture. A transplant is a seedling grown for a year or two, then replanted to another bed to allow for development of a fibrous root system and more branching. A rooted clump is a dormant rooted plant without top growth. It may not have leafing but is ready to grow! 3 Page 3 NEW OR FEATURED TREE & SHRUB SPECIES FOR 2018 American Witchhazel Eastern Larch This species is the source of medicinal witchhazel. It can grow nicely, up to 20 feet, in urban areas with adequate soil moisture. Witchhazel provides food for wildlife and is one of the only native plants that blooms in late fall or early winter. This is one of the fastest growing native conifers, up to 80 feet under the right conditions. The Eastern Larch is used for wildlife food and habitat. The needles of this tree turn yellow in fall and drop in the winter. Gray Dogwood Eastern Sweetshrub This is a low-growing wild hedge with a thickly branched structure used as wildlife habitat. Blooms white flower clusters followed by white fruit in bright red fruit stalks seedlings with a height up to 6. The deciduous shrub grows 3-12 feet tall and wide. It is used as wildlife habitat and has a strong camphor smell when it is scraped. It produces dark red, strongly scented flowers that resemble a small magnolia flower. American Hazelnut Serviceberry The nuts produced from this tree have a higher nutritional value than acorns and beechnuts. This plant provides a food source for a variety of wildlife and humans. Broadly oval deciduous leaves seedling, height up to 10. Among the first of the early spring trees and shrubs to bloom, flowers in MarchMay, and fruiting JuneAugust. At least 40 different song bird species are known to feed on its fruit. Available in the Flowering Tree & Shrub Pack. See page 10 for details. White Flowering Dogwood Edible Fruit Multi-pack This multi-pack contains two of each blackberry, raspberry, and strawberry plants and two different varieties of blueberry. See page 7 for more details. Back by popular demand! This species can be used to prevent erosion or as a windbreak. It also produces a striking display of white flowers when in full bloom in April and May. Available in the Flowering Tree & Shrub Pack. See page 10 for details.

4 Page 4 CONIFERS Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) Slow growth rate, up to 100 feet. Prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils with partial to full sun. Primarily used for screens, windbreaks, and Christmas trees. Sharp needles with a bluish tint seedling. Price: $12/10pack; $47/50 pack; $80/100 pack Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri) Non- This stately tree is commonly used for Christmas tree production and wildlife benefits. With a moderate growth rate reaching 50 ft., shiny dark green needles, a distinctive bark and dense pyramidal shape it is a popular choice. It grows in cool, moist soils transplant*. Price: $21/10 pack $88/50 pack; $157/100 pack. Concolor Fir (Abies concolor) Slow to moderate growth rate, up to 120 feet. Prefers deep, permeable soils with partial to full sun. Primarily used for Christmas trees and lumber. Curved silver/ green needles seedling. Price: $16/10 pack; $63/50 pack; $105/100 pack Eastern Larch (Larix laricina) Rapid growth rate, up to 80 feet. Prefers full to partial sun and predominately wet conditions with poor to moderately drained soils. Primarily used for lumber and wildlife habitat. Deciduous, needlelike leaves produced in clusters seedling. Price: $17/10 pack; $68/10 pack; $114/100 pack Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) Rapid growth rate, up to 150 feet. Prefers moist to well-drained soils with partial to full sun, but is adaptable to adverse soil conditions. Primarily used for lumber and Christmas trees. Prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils with partial to full sun. Does not tolerate poorly drained soils. Primarily used for windbreaks, ornamental plantings, and sometimes Christmas trees. Prefers moist, well-drained, loamy soils in full sun, but very adaptable to adverse conditions, such as heat, drought, humidity, and pollution. Used for lumber and wildlife habitat. It s needles are aromatic. Also known as American arborvitae transplant*. Price: $20/100pack; $84/50 pack; $154/100pack White Spruce (Picea glauca) Slow to moderate growth rate, up to 100 feet. Prefers moist, welldrained soils and is shade tolerant. Not tolerant to pollution, winter salt spray, dry soils, and heat. Primarily used for lumber, windbreaks, Christmas trees, screens and wildlife habitat. Green needles, with pungent odor when crushed seedling. 5 Page 5 DECIDUOUS SHRUBS American Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana L.) Slow growth rate, up to 20 feet. Grows nicely in urban areas with adequate soil moisture, highly shade tolerant, grows under conditions from shade to sun and moist to well drained soils. Source of medicinal witch hazel. Bright yellow flowers, blooms in fall seedling. Price: $15/10 pack; $58/50pack Eastern Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) Deciduous shrub growing up to 12 feet tall. Prefers average, medium, well-drained soil. Tolerates full sun to partial shade. Blooms strongly scented dark red flowers in April and July. Lotus resembles small magnolia flower seedling. Price: $16/10pack; $62/50 pack Arrowood (Viburnum dentatum) Is often used for borders or screens to attract birds that eat its fruit. Grows to a height of 6-15 ft., with arching branches and a rounded crown. The plant develops white flowers and the fruit is bluish-black between August and November seedling. Price: $15/10pack; $58/50pack Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) Moderate growth rate, up to 12 feet. Prefers a wide variety of soil conditions with saturation. This is a shade tolerant species. Primarily used for fruit production and to attract wildlife. White-pinkish flowers bloom from February to June and 1/2 blue berries fruiting from April to October seedling. Species that have moderate to high salt tolerance include: Gray Dogwood (Cornus racemosa Lam.) Slow growth rate, up to 6 feet. Tolerates many climatic conditions, moderate shade tolerance. The berries are primarily used as a food resource for humans and wildlife. White flowers bloom from May to July and the juicy red berries ripen around in July seedling. 6 Page 6 American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) Moderate growth rate, up to 10 feet. Prefers sun to partial shade and rich, moist, well-drained soils. Cultivated for nut production. Also provides habitat and food to wildlife. Broadly oval deciduous leaves seedling. Price: $14/10 pack; $58/50 pack American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) Rapid growth rate, up to 100 feet. Prefers moist, deep, rich soils with full sun, but is very adaptable to dry, wet, compacted, and poor soil conditions. Primarily used for pulpwood and wildlife habitat. Has a large, broad, open crown, with crooked branches. Bark is attractively mottled seedling. Price: $13/10 pack; $53/50 pack Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) Rapid growth rate, up to 80 feet. Prefers moist, rich, moderatelywell drained soils, but will tolerate a variety of soil types, textures, and drainages with partial or full sun. Primarily used for lumber and for habitat & food resource for wildlife. Flowers are small and white. Crushed foliage and bark have a cherry-like odor and a bitter taste seedling. Price: $13/10 pack; $53/50 pack Red Oak (Quercus rubra) Moderate growth rate, up to 80 feet. Prefers deep, fertile, well drained, finely textured soils, but very adaptable to many different soil types, textures, and drainages with partial sun to full sun. Primarily used for lumber and habitat & food resource for wildlife. Bitter acorns are heavily predated upon by mammals seedling. Price: $12/10 pack; $50/50 pack DECIDUOUS TREES Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) Slow growth rate, up to 150 feet. Prefers rich, well-drained soils and is shade tolerant. Will tolerate drier upland soils. Primarily used for commercial sap production and habitat & food resource for wildlife. Leaves are deciduous, opposite, and are long-petioled. Fruits are paired, winged nutlets. As our New York State tree it provides a beautiful display of fall color seedling. Price: $15/10 pack; $64/50 pack White Oak (Quercus alba) Slow growth rate, up to 100 feet. Prefers coarse, deep, moist, well drained, slightly acid soils with partial to full sunlight, but very adaptable to many different soil types, textures and drainages. Primarily for lumber and habitat & food resource for wildlife. Acorns are oval, with 1/4 covered with a cap which drops off at maturity. Bark is whitish or light gray seedling. Price: $14/10 pack; $58/50 pack Wild Plum (Prunus americana) Wild Plums can be eaten fresh, canned, and preserved in jams for human consumption. Turkeys, foxes, and songbirds eat the fruit as well. It is recommended as a drought resistance, erosion control plant and for creating wildlife habitat. Wild plum can grows to a height of 24 ft. and has white flower clusters in April/May and fruit in August seedling. Price: $13/10 pack; $53/50 pack Compost mulch will be available at the ecopark during both the Tree and Shrub pre-order distribution and overstock sale. This is a great source for you to obtain excellent nutrients and cover for your plantings! However, mulch is not for use in vegetable gardens. 7 Page 7 Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) Perennial with a rapid growth rate, up to 3 feet. Prefers well drained to somewhat poorly drained soil in full sun. Yellow flowers with dark brown spherical centers bloom from June to September. It is planted to beautify landscaping and in critical area seedings for erosion control. Dormant rooted clumps. Price: $16/10 pack; $68/50 pack OTHER PLANTS Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) Purple coneflower is a perennial herb that produces aesthetically pleasing cone shaped flowers. The flowers attract pollinators such as humming birds and butterflies. Birds will feed on its seeds. The plant can also be used to make popular herbal remedies and have become increasingly rare in the wild. Dormant rooted clumps. Price: $13/10 pack; $50/50 pack Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) A perennial with a moderate growth rate, up to 2 feet. Prefers moderately well drained to somewhat poorly drained soils with full sun to part shade. This is a herbaceous wildflower that blooms from April to May. The pale pink to deep pink flowers attract butterflies and makes for a great ornamental flower. Dormant rooted clumps. Price: $16/10 pack; $68/50 pack Planting and Storage Tips If storage is necessary, be sure to store your seedlings in a dark, cool area. Once in storage, check the moisture content of each bundle and sprinkle with water if necessary. DO NOT SOAK SEEDLINGS FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. Plant your seedlings as soon as possible. This reduces mortality rates. Use a site that s been properly prepared. Sod should be removed and be sure to consider sun and shade preferences for each plant as well as soils, drainage and ph before planting. Plant your seedlings at the proper depth and cover with mulch or weed mats. Water your seedlings and plants often. Following these tips can greatly increase plant survival rates!

8 Page 8 CONSERVATION MULTI-PACKS Editable Fruit Multi-Pack #1 Plant pack contains 10 plants with two of each species. All of these plants produce fruit that is edible to humans and also enjoyed by wildlife. Blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry plants will be sold in dormant seedlings larger than 9 inches and strawberry plants are sold in dormant roots. Price: $35.00 per packet Blackberry - Darrow (Rubus darrow) (Eldorado x Brewer) x Hedrick Moderate growth rate, up to 5 feet. Prefers moist to welldrained, sandy loam soils with partial to full sun. Not tolerant to dry, hot conditions. Primarily used as a food resource by humans and wildlife (blackberries have record diameter of 1 inch). This hybrid bears its large fruit over a long season from late spring through early summer. Fruits are borne on second-year canes. Blueberry - Jersey (Vaccinium corymbosum) Jersey Is a late season producing blueberry plant. It produces high yields of small blueberries. The plant is cold hardy and can grow in a wide range of soils when compared to other blueberry cultivar. Jersey blueberries are also enjoyed by humans and animals. Blueberry - Blue Crop (Vaccinium corymbosum) Bluecrop The most widely planted midseason producing blueberry cultivar in the world. It can produce high yields of medium sized blueberries. It is a disease resistant and cold hardy blueberry plant produced by selective breeding. The plant can grow to a height of 6-8. Blue crop blueberries are enjoyed by humans and animals. Raspberry - Latham (Rubus latham) This plant requires full sun to grow well. It typically flowers in the late spring and produces bright and tasty berries mid summer that are enjoyed by birds as well as humans. It grows to approximately 3-5 in height and has dark green leaves. Strawberry - Jewel (Fragaria ananassa) A common variety of strawberry that is widely grown and sold. The berries are large and wedge shaped that are firm and are abrasion resistant. This variety of strawberry is well known for its flavor and high quality berries. This plant also has longer yielding seasons than other strawberry plants. The flowers of the strawberry plant can attract pollinators and the plant and it s fruit are eaten by many animals.

9 Page 9 CONSERVATION MULTI-PACKS Fern Plant Variety Pack #2 Plant pack contains 10 plants with two of each species. All of these ferns are protected plants in New York. Plants will be sold in dormant rooted clumps. Price: $18.00 per packet Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum pedatum) Moderate growth rate, up to 2.5 feet in height and 1.5 feet in width. Prefers moist, acidic soils, but will tolerate medium well-drained soils in partial shade to full shade. This perennial fern is finelytextured, with somewhat frilly fronds which have curved stalks and are palmatelydivided. Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) Moderate growth rate, up to 2 feet in height and 2 feet in width. Prefers moist, welldrained and acidic soils in partial to full shade. This perennial fern is evergreen, dark green, with a characteristic "ear-like" lobe pointing upwards. Most commonly found in woodlands. New York Fern (Thelypteris noveboracensis) Moderate growth rate, up to 1.5 feet in height. Prefers welldrained to poorly-drained soils in partial to full shade. This fern is straw-colored, shading to green, scales tan to reddish brown. Ostrich Fern (Athyrium pycnocarpon) Moderate growth rate, up to 3 feet in height. Prefers moist soils with partial to full shade. This fern has a smooth lance shaped pinnae and has sharp pointed tips that are reduced at the base. Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) Moderate growth rate, up to 5 feet in height. Prefers poorly drained, wet acid soils and in partial to full shade. This perennial fern gets its name because of the cinnamoncolored hairs covering leaf stalks and reproductive bodies.

Price: $18 per packet Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) Moderate growth rate, up to 12 feet. Prefers moderately drained soils with full sun. The berries are consumed by wildlife and humans. Flowers are white, blooming in May with fruit harvested in the fall dormant seedling. NEW SPECIES! Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) Rapid growth rate up to 7 feet. Prefers well drained to poorly drained soils and sunlight to shade. Berries used by humans and wildlife. Attracts pollinating insects. Blooms white flowers in June and July followed by dark purple berries dormant seedling. Serviceberry (Amelanchier) Slow growth rate, up to 25 feet. Prefers moderately drained to poorly drained soils in partial to full shade. At least 40 different song bird species are known to feed on its fruit. Blooms white flower in March- May dormant seedling. American Cranberry (Viburnum opulus) Slow growth rate up to 10 feet. Prefers moderately to poorly drained soils and full sun. Berries consumed by humans and wildlife. Blooms white flowers in May and June followed by red berries dormant seedling. White Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) Moderate growth rate with a height up to 30 feet. Prefers well drained soil with partial sun. Striking display of white flowers when in full bloom in April and May dormant seedling.

11 Page 11 CONSERVATION MULTI-PACKS Hosta Variety Multi-Pack #4 Plant pack contains 10 with two of each plant. Plants will be sold in dormant roots. Price: $20.00 per packet NEW SPECIES! Hosta (Fortunei-Hyacinthina) A selection great for mass plantings with broad, firm, heart-shaped leaves that are deep gray-green on top and blue below. This Hosta has greater sun tolerance when compared to other Hosta varieties. Pale lavender flowers appear on 30" scapes in mid to late summer. Hosta (F. aureomarginata) This Hosta has large mounds of wavy, green, glossy, pointed leaves that are both sun and drought tolerant. Fragrant, white flowers appear on 35-40" scapes in late summer; fragrance is most pronounced in the evening. Variegated Hosta (Ventricosa) A Hosta with huge, glossy, dark green leaves of average thickness that have a slightly twisted tip. The leaves are heart-shaped and deeply veined. Medium-purple blooms with distinctive striping are shown atop 40 scapes in midsummer. This Hosta has numerous pods filled with fertile seeds that are produced after the flowers. Varietaged Hosta (Undulata albo) As one of the first hostas to come up in the spring it has medium green leaves with wavy, white margins and gray -green streaks at the junction of the margin and center. Note that this Hosta may lose its variegation temporarily if in a potted container, during the hottest part of the season. It has pale lavender flowers appearing on scapes in midsummer. Variegated Hosta (Undulata varigata) This Hosta has wavy leaves with white centers and irregular green margins, twisted at the tips. It too may lose its variegation temporarily, if planted in a container, during the hottest part of the season. It has lilac flowers that appear on 38 scapes in midsummer.

For those that miss the pre-order deadline visit the Overstock Sale, noting that not all species may be available at that time. We sell to our customers on a first come, first served basis. All seedlings are bare root. Stock may be used for wildlife habitat, erosion control, reforestation, windbreaks, landscaping, Christmas trees, etc. All trees and shrubs sold are to be used for the above conservation practices. All trees and shrubs are sold with the understanding that they will not be removed from the planted site with roots attached for resale. Orders are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. The District reserves the right to refund payment on species and items if they should become unavailable. Because the District cannot check a planting location, nor guard against improper handling and planting procedures or weather related problems, the District will not be responsible for replacement or refunds of orders after distribution. 14 Page 14 The District s Annual Conservation Tree and Shrub Program distribution site will be at the Monroe County ecopark facility. The ecopark provides county residents with an innovative facility that serves as a one-stop drop-off to dispose of and recycle their items. This facility is a partnership between Monroe County and Waste Management of New York. Regular Collection Hours: Wednesdays 1:00 pm 6:30 pm Saturdays 7:30 am 1:00 pm Please note that there will not be collection hours available during our pre-order distribution (April 19-20). No ecopark staff will be available at that time. We encourage you to visit during their new hours listed above or come by during our Overstock Sale scheduled for Saturday, April 21. Compost mulch will continue to be available at the ecopark during both the Tree and Shrub pre-order distribution and overstock sale.
