1 HEIRLOOM VEGETABLE PROGRAM 2016 BEANS Beurre de Rocquencort (Snap) Bush beans. A productive heirloom wax bean named for Rocquencourt, France, a town in France s rich farming country. Wax beans were introduced to France in the 1840 s from Algeria, and this variety is a descendant of those early beans. The bush plants set good yields early. These beans are favored by cooks for their fine-flavored pods that are a bright waxy-yellow in color. Black valentine (Snap/Dry) Introduced in 1897, shiny black seeds in 6 green pods. A great dual-purpose variety, use as a snap bean or dried soup bean. Prolific and dependable. Tiger Eye (Snap/Dry) - Striking colors make this dried bean an intriguing variety producing gold and maroon beans. Its versatility and superiority in the kitchen make it a gardeners must-have. Produces well in a broad range of conditions. The dried beans are prized for their creamy texture and skins that dissolve with cooking. For fresh snap beans: Tiger s Eye beans are ready to pick when the pod snaps or breaks in half cleanly. This is when the seeds have just begun to form and the pods are 4" long. Hold the stem with one hand, and the pod with the other hand to avoid pulling off branches, which may continue to produce. Harvest regularly to encourage fresh snap bean production. For shelling beans: Harvest beans when pods are leathery but not papery and beans are moist. Wait 2 to 3 weeks longer than snap beans for harvest. For dry beans: Allow beans to dry on the vine until 90% of their leaves have dropped, pods are papery, and your fingernail does not leave an indent. Wait 6 weeks longer than snap beans for harvest. At season s end, plants are nitrogen-rich compost material if disease free. Thai Soldier - (bush long bean) Vigorous bush habit for those who want to grow long beans but prefer not to trellis. Foot-long pods are firm and very flavorful. Pods are strikingly different in appearance, having tiger-stripes in dark redbrown. Superior variety from Thailand, where long beans are a staple crop. Unusual and very choice! Chinese Red Noodle Bean - This is a most stunning and unique bean. Fantastic, deep red, 18 pods are so delicious and full of nutrition, and they keep most of their color when sautéed Long vines produce all summer and do well under many conditions. Chinese ethnic variety that produces fairly early. Small red seeds.

2 CUCUMBERS Poona Kheera - Originally from Poona, India this unusual cucumber matures into what looks like a russet potato. Tender, crisp and delicious it can be eaten at any stage skin and all. Hardy, disease resistant vines produce an early crop with good yields. Suyo Long - a traditional variety from China that offers an abundance of delicious, burpless, crispy cucumbers. Growing to 16" long on vigorous vines, the sweet ribbed fruits can be picked at any stage, from very young to fully mature. Perfect for eating fresh or for pickling. Grow it on a trellis for straighter fruits. Sikkim Cucumber - The historic cucumber of Sikkim. Fat, large fruit can reach several pounds in size. The ripe fruit is a unique rusty red color and is good eaten cooked or raw. In Asia, cucumbers are often stir-fried. This variety is grown in the Himalayas of Sikkim and Nepal. 3 EGGPLANT Listada de Gardia - A French heirloom variety that produces plentiful 6-8 attractive oval fruits on plants that thrive in heat. You ll love its thin-skinned fruits that do not require peeling. Their starry, violet flowers and attractive fruits make them beautiful additions to your flower garden as well as edible treats! Eggplants should be harvested when the fruit is 6-8 long and the skin is still shiny. If you are in doubt about maturity level, note that it s better to harvest eggplants a little young rather than wait until they are overly mature with dull skin, plentiful dark seeds, and bitter taste. To harvest, cut woody stem with pruners. Continual harvest will encourage more production. Pintung Long - A wonderful eggplant from Ping Tung, Taiwan. Fruits are purple and up to 18 long and 2 in diameter. This variety is so sweet and tender, superbly delicious. Slender fruits grow up to 12 inches and have dark lavender skin. Disease resistant plants. Rosa Bianca Back by popular request!! Colorful, light pink-lavender fruit with white shading. Rich, mild flesh is very popular with chefs and gardeners alike! No bitterness. Thai Green - an heirloom from Thailand. Long slender 12 fruits have tender light green skin that does not require peeling. Fine quality mild white flesh absorbs flavors well. Prolific and drought resistant. PEPPERS Thai Hot (Hot) - Compact plants covered with small red and green peppers at the same time is a festive and unique choice for patio containers. Harvest when peppers have turned from green to red. When harvesting, take care to avoid touching the interior of any broken peppers, as the capsaicin is an extreme irritant, especially to the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after harvesting, or wear gloves to harvest peppers. 50, ,000 Scoville Heat Units (very hot). Fatailli (Hot) - Habanero type peppers from the Central African Republic with a delicious citrus flavor and few seeds. The chemical in hot peppers that causes a burning sensation is known as capsaicin and can be found in the highest concentration in the white pith and seeds of the fruit. Joe s Round (Hot) - Productive plants that have clusters of ¾ round fruit that ripen from deep green to bright red. Great for pickling or for fresh salsa. ( SHU)

4 Bhut Julokia (Hot) - Also known as Ghost Pepper, Naga Morich. Legendary variety, one of the world's hottest peppers, if not the hottest. Bhut Jolokia starts out slow but eventually makes tall plants, exceeding 4 ft in favored locations. The thin-walled, wrinkled, pointed fruits reach 2-3" in length, ripening mostly to red. (855,00-1,041,427 SHU) Jimmy Nardello (Sweet) - An heirloom from Italy dating back to One of the best sweet peppers for frying, it has a delicious roasted apple flavor. Productive plants are loaded with glossy red 10 long peppers. A favorite of Urban Roots gardeners! Corno di Toro (Sweet) - The traditional favorite in Italy. Long 8-inch tapered, bullhorn shaped golden-yellow peppers are sweet and spicy. They are great fresh or roasted. Large plants yield well. Among the best peppers you can grow and so delicious. Pure Italian seed. Friariello Di Napoli (Sweet) - This is the famous frying pepper of Naples, Italy. This heirloom produces small, long, cone-shaped peppers that are fried or pickled and are known for their sweet, distinctive flavor. The plants are very productive, so you will get plenty of delicious fruit all summer. TOMATOES Specked Roman (I) - this unique roma will wow you with orange and yellow stripes! It not only looks extraordinary, it s a first-rate performer in the garden and in the kitchen. Speckled Roman is a prolific producer; fruits have meaty flesh and few seeds, perfect for sauces. Provide support for vigorous vines that reach 6' or more. Harvest tomatoes when fully colored and firm. About 1 month before the average first fall frost, clip all blossoms and any undersized fruit off the plant. This will steer all the plant s remaining energy into ripening what s left. If you have a lot of unripe tomatoes near the end of the season and a frost is approaching, pick them and store them indoors in a single layer away from direct sunlight to ripen. Blodenkopfchen (I) - Little Blond Girl East German heirloom. Small golden yellow 1 fruit borne in giant clusters. Enormous yields of sweet, rarely cracked fruit. Deliciously sweet w/ a slight citrusy finish. Bears until frost. Black Seaman (D) - Russian Heirloom. Small plants produce medium sized brownpink fruit w. olive green shading. Rich flavor, potato leaf foliage. Emerald Evergreen (I) - Medium-large fruit that stay "evergreen." This heirloom variety was introduced by Glecklers Seedsmen around The large plants set heavy yields of these beauties, which have a lovely lime-green color. The flavor is rich and superbly sweet. White Cherry (I) - Early and productive pale yellow to ivory 1 once fruit. Sweet, fruity flavor!

5 Paul Robeson (I) Russian Heirloom named after opera singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Brick red fruit w/ dark green shoulders and red flesh. Distinctive smoky, earthy flavor with a perfect acid/sweet balance. Sheboygan (I) - Grown since the early 1900 s by Lithuanian immigrants in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Pink paste type 4-6 oz fruit. Excellent flavor, heavy yields, great for canning. Moonglow (I) - Winner of SSE 2007 Tomato Tasting. Bright orange globes with solid flesh, few seeds and mild sweetness. Excellent keeper. Black Icicle (I) - Stunning, perfectly shaped, deep purplish-brown fruit that are almost black. A great variety for both home gardeners and chefs. This tomato has the incredible rich taste that is in many of the large, dark beefsteak types: sweet, rich with earthy overtones. Sudduth s Strain (I) - Large pink beefsteak fruits up to 2 lbs. Incredibly rich, intense tomato flavor. Isis Candy Tomato (I) - Gorgeous bi-color cherry tomatoes w/ cat s eye starburst on the blossom end. Rich, sweet, fruity flavor Plants are loaded with clusters of /2 fruit Black Krim (I) A Russian beefstake heirloom. Dark red/purple fruit w with sweet, intense, slightly salty flavor. Suitable for container growing. Black Prince - An heirloom from Irkutsk, Siberia. The 5-oz. tomatoes are round and very uniform; the color is a wonderful deep blackish-chocolate brown. The flavor is as deep, sweet and rich as the color. A unique salad tomato; the plants produce a large crop and early; a good tomato for fine markets. Brandywine Red- Very vigorous plants bear large-lobed, beefsteak-shaped fruit that are perfect for slicing. The thin-skinned, pinkish-red tomatoes are flavorful but not acidic. Cherokee Purple - An old Cherokee Indian heirloom, pre-1890 variety; beautiful deep dusky purple-pink color, superb sweet flavor, and very large sized fruit. Try this one for real old-time tomato flavor. My favorite dark tomato! Great White - Large, 1-lb giant, creamy white fruit, this tomato is superbly wonderful. The flesh is so good and deliciously fruity, it reminds one of a mixture of fresh-cut pineapple, melon and guava. One of our favorite fresheating tomatoes! Fruit are smoother than most large beefsteak types, and yields can be very high. Introduced by Gleckler's Seedsmen. Pineapple - Very large, up to 2 lbs. each. The yellow fruit has red marbling through the flesh and is one of the most beautiful tomatoes we sell. The flavor is very sweet and fruity; good yields!

6 TOMATILLO Tomatillo Purple Heirloom (Physalis ixocarpa) - Beautiful purple fruit, large size. Many are a bright violet color throughout their flesh. Much sweeter than the green types; it can be eaten right off the plant. Turns purple when ripe; rare! NOVELTY Malabar Spinach - This beautiful plant is not a true spinach but a different species (Basella rubra). This heat-loving Asian vine has lovely red stems and delicious, succulent leaves that are great in salads and stir-fries. Ground Cherries (P. pruinosa) - Huge yields of tart-sweet berries. This is the common type used by the Pilgrims; excellent for pies, jams, and preserves of all kinds; also delicious fresh. The fruit grow inside a paper-like husk (the same as Tomatillos). Grow it the same as you would tomatoes. Soybean Envy - Early variety is great for the North. Perfect for edamame, fresh shelling or dried; nice green-colored beans have good flavor.
