2 Dear Customers and Friends, January 31, 1993 We wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year and would like to thank all of you who have helped make this our best year yet. We are indeed fortunate to have our business continue to grow. We are also blessed with excellent, dedicated and caring employees who help us ship over a thousand different kinds of bulbs and related items to you. Thank you for sharing your success stories about bulbs with us as this helps us to enable others to enjoy bulbs of many types and requirements! Our computer order and invoicing system was less of a headache this year and I hope, as we learn more about computers, will continue improving. It takes some getting used to, to realize that the machine runs us, we don't run it Many of you have asked about our son, Duke, who was in an automobile accident and was working with us last year. His leg is better, but I'm afraid will never be 'right'. He decided that he had worked for his parents long enough, so he's now working in a Metal Plating Shop here in Gloucester. He really appreciated your concern. (Mary and Kristen are in the office with us now, so say 'hello' to them when you call) As for the other three children, Jay, our oldest, is a Theatre major at Christopher Newport University. He was just cast as the 'lead' in "Picnic" and will also be playing the role of 'Jesus' in "Jesus Christ Superstar". He's having a great time! Dorothy is a tall, beautiful, blond, senior in high school, trying to decide where she wants to go to college next year. Robert, a sophomore in high school, is an excellent student, a champion soccer player and started running and winning in track this year.! It's so much fun to watch them grow and mature. They all have their different personalities and talents, and they all separately and collectively have really 'improved our prayer life'! Last Spring we both went to Holland. For the first week, we lead a tour group around to see Keukenhoef, The Floriadc, growing fields, 'Mosaics', Museums, the Flower Auction and much more! It's always fun to go, but I believe it is more fun to show others around that have never been there! It's like seeing it again 'for the very first time'! We hope to be able to do more as the demand increases and as time permits. The second week in Holland we went from one grower to the next checking on the bulbs that were being increased for us. One of the most exciting moments was when we saw our very own seedlings in a production field being increased. We continue to hybridize, really enjoy the process, get excited when we see something 'promising' in our field, but the real test is in the commercial production field where each flower competes with all the others as to stem strength, life of the bloom and marketability. Wow! What a feeling to see our own doing so well! You may notice that there are certain cultivars of daffodils that are very popular but are not in our catalogue. 'Peeping Tom' is an example that we leave out because the whole stock is currently virused. There arc usually alternate choices that are very close in type and color to those, and we'll be happy to suggest them to you if you'll give us a call. Our Trial Gardens and Seedling beds have not been open to the public since 1975, still every year we get calls from people who want to come and 'see the flowers'. We have thought and prayed over this for so long to try to come up with the right decision. We have so much work to do in the Spring, we have very limited parking, we can't afford the luxury of people 'dropping in' and touring unattended, and this is also our home, so the plans had to be very specific. However, we are happy to announce that we will be open for the 1993 Spring season. The details are as follows: With Mother Nature's help, we will be open March 16th April 10th You must make a reservation ahead to time, because of parking and limited tours Tours will be guided and will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, only Tours will be held at 10 am, 12, 2, and 4 pm The tour on Saturday April 3rd will be in conjunction with The Daffodil Festival only The cost of each tour will be S5.00 per person Please mark your calendar and make plans to be with us and please do call ahead of time. We sure don't want to have to turn anyone away after driving so far! Again, thank you for your business and continued support. We wish you many blue ribbons, beautiful flower gardens and lots of smiles! Happy Gardening! Brent & Becky 2
