8 Tree Descriptions American Arborvitae Thuja occidentalis Also known as White Cedar, it can grow to 40 feet tall with a foot spread. This tree has a pyramidal shape and makes an elegant hedge or windbreak. Arborvitae performs best in moist soils of alkaline ph, but is very adaptable to poor soils that are rocky, sterile, dry or wet, and of neutral to acidic ph. It can be planted just about anywhere there is full sun to partial sun, with minimal aftercare. Arborvitae is perhaps the most popular evergreen consumed by deer and other mammals during winter, and its evergreen canopy provides cover for mammals and birds year-round. Austrian Pine Pinus nigra Growth 50 to 60 feet. Spread 20 to 40 feet. Stiff, dark green needles. Dense, pyramidal growth. Ordinary to poor soil. Does equally well in limestone or acidic soil. Can take dry rocky conditions. Will tolerate limited amounts of highway salt. Good for thick screen or windbreak. Bald Cypress Taxoium distichum Grows 50 to 70 feet in height. Spread 20 feet. Bright yellow needles in spring turning to rich orange to pumpkin brown in autumn. Deciduous. Grows in wide range of soil conditions from wet, swampy areas to dry ground. Good for wetland plantings. Box Elder Acer negundo The boxelder is a fast growing, wide spreading, short stemmed tree of irregular shape. It is of medium size and under favorable conditions it attains a height of 50 to 80 feet and a diameter of 24 inches. I can be a rather short-lived tree, but because of its rapid growth on good soils, it has been planted frequently for shade and ornamental purposes in areas where other trees do not grow well. Good for stream bank stabilization. Buckeye, Ohio Aesculus glabra As a member of the Horsechestnut Family, it is related to other Horsechestnuts and Buckeyes. Its lightweight wood is used in the production of artificial limbs, and the holding of a "buckeye nut" in one's pocket is considered good luck. A native of the Midwestern and Great Plains states, trees found in the open may reach 60 feet tall by 30 feet wide. Ohio Buckeye prefers moist, well-drained soils of variable ph that are rich and deep, in partially sunny to partially shaded conditions. It adapts to average soils that are occasionally dry, but moderate to heavy leaf scorch will develop by mid - summer, especially when sited in full sun. Ohio Buckeye prefers shady conditions in its youth, but grows in full sun to full shade from youth through maturity. Do NOT eat any part of the Buckeye Tree. Bur Oak Quercus macrocarpa Growth to 75 feet with equal or slightly greater spread. Valued as a timber producer. Will make satisfactory growth on poor soil. The acorns are eaten by many birds and mammals, including squirrels, rabbits, ground squirrels, mice, deer, black bear, wild turkey, wood ducks, flickers, woodpeckers, and blue jays. The trees are slow-growing but long -lived and may reach ages of 300 to 400 years old with some trees to 450! Eastern White Pine Pinus strobes The largest northeastern conifer, a magnificent evergreen tree with straight trunk and crown of horizontal branches, 1 row added a year, becoming broad and irregular. Fast growing and adaptable to many conditions, it has long, soft needles and grows to 100 feet. Excellent ornamental tree for specimens, naturalizing, windbreak or dense screen. White Pine performs best in evenly moist, rich, well-drained, acidic soils in full sun. It is often intolerant of soils that are alkaline in ph and poorly drained; therefore, the heavy clay soils of much of central and western Ohio cause it to struggle in parts of this region, while it often thrives in eastern Ohio. Norway Spruce Picea abies Fast growing spruce with draping branches that can reach 80 feet and is valuable as a windbreak and wildlife shelter. Thrives in average soil conditions, but prefers moisture to maintain its deep green color. Perhaps the most adaptable common evergreen tree to harsh conditions, including poor, clay, rocky, dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline ph. It thrives under seasonal drought once it is established, and takes well to city pollution. Pecan Carya illinoensis Pecan is a medium to large sized deciduous tree ranging from feet. Pecan trees commonly grow on rich, moist, well drained soils that are not subject to prolonged flooding. Pecan trees produce edible nuts that have a high percentage of fat and are used extensively in candies and cookies. These nuts are sweet and delicious and are often added to bread, cake, and ice cream. Shagbark Hickory Carya ovata Shagbark hickory is a large (60 to 80 feet), slow-growing, long-lived deciduous hardwood tree that is native to North America. It produces edible nuts that are consumed by humans and wildlife, and excellent fuel and wood products. It is probably the most distinctive of all the hickories because of its loose-plated bark. Some animals, like Indiana bats, make their homes in snug crevices beneath the loose bark. Branches and leaves of shagbarks form pretty, oval-shaped crowns in the spring and summer. Shagbark hickories can tolerate a range of temperatures, but they grow best on moist soils in humid climates. Red Maple Acer rubrum Red maple is a small to medium sized, native deciduous tree that generally reaches 30 to 90 feet in height. It is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America. Red maples are one of the first trees to flower in spring, usually March to April. Red maple is one of the most common trees in the Midwest and East. It is often found in swamps and on moist soils, but can also thrive in drier habitats.
9 Willow Oak Quercus phellos The Willow Oak has a long life span relative to most other plant species and a rapid growth rate. At maturity, the typical Willow Oak will reach up to 100 feet high. Its acorn is relished by game animals and birds such as ducks, squirrels, deer, and turkey, blue jays and red-headed woodpeckers. Grackles, flickers, mice and flying squirrels utilize the tree itself. The wood is used for lumber, crossties, construction and pulp. Willow oak is widely planted as an ornamental and shade tree. It is well adapted to moist, well-drained, acid soils and full sun or light shade. Yellow Poplar Liriodendron tulipifera Yellow poplar is a tree with many nicknames like tulip tree, tulip poplar or whitewood. It is part of the magnolia family and has many unique features that make it one of the more attractive landscaping trees, if you have room to grow it. This poplar grows between 70 and 90 feet high. The poplar s beautiful flowers bloom in the spring and are pollinated especially by honey bees. It does best on moderately moist, deep, well drained, loose textured soils; it rarely grows well in very dry or very wet situations. Special Features Strawberry Plants Earliglow This variety has set the standard for traditional strawberry taste. The first and second pickings are nice sized berries for eating out of hand and the later pickings are fantastic for jams and freezing. (Zone 4-8) Dwarf Rose Hedge Rosa rugose Height 6 to 8 feet. Spread to 4 feet. This strain of Rosa Rugosa was developed for salt spray tolerance and tolerance for dry areas with poor soil conditions. It is also found to have excellent growth and survival rate, high level of insect and disease resistance and good fruit production. The berries attract birds and the plants provide good cover for birds and animals. Bullseye Mountain Laurel Kalmia latifolia This is a large, broadleaf evergreen shrub growing to a height of 6 to 7 feet, with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. In May through June, deep purplish cinnamon colored buds open to a creamy blossom with a broad purple band around the inside with a white throat and edge. Plant in filtered sunlight where the soil is acidic and moist, but well drained. One of the best and most loved native plants to Eastern North America. Munstead English Lavender Lavandula angustifolia This is the most compact form of lavender. Very aromatic, small, bright lavender-blue flower spikes. Semi-evergreen, aromatic gray foliage retains its sweet fragrance for years when cut. Height 12 to 16 inches and spread 12 to 24 inches. Excellent dried flower, cut flower or can be used to make allow growing hedge. Attracts butterflies. Rhubarb - Crimson Red Considered by some to be the best flavored rhubarb available with a perfect sweet, tart combination that makes rhubarb so appealing. The stalks will grow about 2 feet tall and produce good yields of fleshy stalks that are not stringy. Crimson Red shows good weather hardiness and is adaptable to many soil types and growing conditions. Jumbo sized crowns. Horseradish This refreshingly flavorful root is often used as a condiment with roast beef and oysters as well as many other uses. Although the root is a perennial, it can be grown as an annual, planting new roots each year and harvesting late fall or early spring. This annual system produces tender creamy white carrot shaped roots. Horseradish will give your cooking a splash of flavor. Asparagus Jersey Knight Good for you, a natural source of folic acid, a natural detoxifier, a natural antioxidant, natural help in preventing kidney stones. A well-maintained planting will produce for up to 15 years. Male hybrid asparagus, such as this Jersey Knight are predominantly all males. Since there are no seeds, there will be fewer seedlings growing that will become weeds. Jersey Knight is rust resistant and high yield. It does well where soils are heavier and contain more clay. Red Raspberries Vintage Patent Pending. A new primocane fruiting red raspberry producing high yields of large, firm bright red colored fruit with outstanding flavor. Vintage produces approximately 3 weeks earlier that other fall berries and just as productive. The bright red color is ideal for the fresh market! Blackberries Triple Crown The berry is named for its 3 crowning attributes flavor, productivity and vigor. Triple Crown ripens from about July 10 to about August 10. The plants yield large, glossy black fruits that are pleasantly firm and ripen a week or so earlier than other popular thornless varieties. Plants can be trellised or grown upright. 11 Trumbull SWCD s 2016 Spring Fish Sale It is that time of year again as the Trumbull SWCD gets ready for their annual spring pond stocking sale. Trumbull SWCD will be selling a variety of fish fingerlings through Fender s Fish Hatchery for use in local ponds. Why do you want to stock fish? Your answer can help the District staff provide the best advice or prompt us to refer you to the ODNR Division of Wildlife for more specific information. If you are looking to sport fish, bass and channel catfish are often stocked. Those pond owners experiencing problems with snails may want to order redear sunfish (the Shell Cracker) as a control option. Redear sunfish will also provide food for your bass. White amurs are sterile so they will likely need restocked to maintain adequate levels of vegetation control. Fender s Fish Hatchery will be delivering pre-ordered fish on Tuesday, April 26, These fish are healthy and are ready to be carefully placed in your pond; however, we do not guarantee their survival. To place your order, please fill out the order form and return it along with your check or money order to Trumbull SWCD. Orders will be accepted until Friday, April 22, Pick-up will be Tuesday, April 26, 2016 beginning at 9:30 am and ending at 11:00 am, at the Mosquito Lake Parking area, which is located opposite the Hillside Cemetery at the end of Main Street in Cortland (just past our office building the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center). Notice that pick-up time is set for the morning. Orders must be picked up at the specified time. Please mark your calendars as we do not send out reminders! On the day of pick-up you will need to bring your own containers, lined with a new unscented, heavy-duty plastic bag and partially filled with your own pond water to transport the fish to your pond. Please do not use tap water or well water. Make sure to line the container with the garbage bag prior to adding your pond water. It is also helpful if you ensure the bags do not leak and can be tied shut. A general rule of thumb is to bring a 5 gallon bucket for every 50 fingerlings ordered and bring a 5 gallon bucket for every 2 white amur ordered. Please complete the whole order form including a phone number...sometimes people forget to pick up their fish and this makes it easier for District Staff to contact those individuals. Thanks! For more information, please contact Amy Reeher at , ext. 111 or reehera@embarqmail.com
