5 JIM WHITING NURSERY Shade Trees American Yellowwood A beautiful but somewhat fussy small tree with very show cascading panicles of white flowers in spring, good habit of growth all year round; makes an ideal accent or shade tree for smaller properties; tends to flower profusely every second year Height: 35 feet Hardiness b Ginkgo, Princeton Sentry A true 150 million year old relic with distinctively fan-shaped leaves; this variety features a narrowly pyramidal form and reliable fall color, does not produce fruit; a great choice for the smaller home landscape, far superior to the species Height: 50 feet Hardiness a Turkish, Filbert The Turkish Hazelnut (Filbert) is a broad, pyramidal type tree. It's a unique, densely branched plant with dark green leaves. This tree does produce catkins, which are showy in March. They are tolerant of cold, heat, and drought and their upright habitat make them ideal for urban plantings. A small, slow growing tree, found in pockets along rivers in eastern North Dakota. Leaves resemble elm but this tree is a member of the Birch family. The largest tree in North Dakota. The golden tipped growth is especially prominent during the first half of the growing season. Fall Color: Yellow to brown Foliage: Yellow Height: 40 ft. by 35 ft. Shape: Broadly pyramidal Oak, Bur Pyramidal to oval in youth, gradually developing a massive trunk and a broad crown of stout branches. Does well in alkaline soils. Shape: Broadly oval Zone 3 Oak, Northern Pin Growth habit is similar to Pin Oak with fuzzy pink new leaves, turning to glossy bright green throughout summer. Salt, drought and heat resistant. Shape: Oval form Oak, Northern Red Hardy, rapid growing tree, withstands city pollution better than many other species. Well adapted for street and lawn planting. Fall color is usually dark red. Shape: Weeping Populus, Quaking Aspen A delicate native of the North American forest, with showy white bark and leaves that flutter in the faintest breeze; suckers vigorously, doesn't tolerate polluted conditions well, best left in a natural forest setting or a suburban woodland composition Height: 40 feet Zone 2a BOULEVARD TREE PLANTING PERMITS (City Blvd Tree**) Property owners who wish to plant a tree on the boulevard adjacent to their property must first obtain a tree planting permit from the Rochester Park and Recreation Department. The permit is free and does not obligate the property owner. The permit contains the following information: The species and variety of tree that is to be planted on that particular street. Each street in the City is zoned for multiple tree varieties. The minimum recommended size to be planted--usually 6'-8' in height and no larger than 2.5 in diameter.an information sheet on the proper planting and care of newly planted trees along with a note of caution for the homeowner to notify GOPHER STATE 1-Call prior to digging in the boulevard. Trees planted in the boulevard become the property of the City of Rochester. Adjacent property owners are not compensated for the loss of the tree in the event the tree dies or is removed by the City. 10 Fruit Trees Cherry, Evens Bali A compact fruit tree, the ideal size for backyard orchards; showy white flowers in spring followed by loads of bright red sour cherries in midsummer, excellent for pies and jam; needs full sun and well-drained soil, self-pollinating; extremely hard. Bali Cherry is bathed in stunning clusters of fragrant white flowers along the branches in mid spring before the leaves Height:12 ft. by 15ft. Standard Pollination: Self Fertile Cherry, Sweet Cherry Pie From Wisconsin orchardist Bill Eubank, this new cherry tree has the sweetest tasting cherries we have ever sampled. Although it is not quite sweet enough for fresh eating like a Bing, the cherries from the Sweet Cherry Pie tree are fantastic for jams, jellies and pies. Imagine being able to pick cherries in your back yard for homemade summer pies! Hardy to Height: 15 ft. by 15ft. Pollination: self fertile Peach, Polly A white flesh peach is never so sweet as the moment it is picked. For that reason even the best store bought fruit fails to compare with those you grow at home. Polly is considered the most winter hardy of all white flesh varieties due to its origin in Iowa Height: ft. by 20-25ft. Standard Pollination: Another pear variety b Pear, Parker A compact and hardy pear, this University of Minnesota introduction produces tasty mediumsized reddish brown fruit in late summer on an upright and vigorous plant, showy white flowers in spring; a great choice for the home orchard.
