2 How the wines were judged Where the wines in the show come from. The Australian Inland Wine Show focuses on wines predominately made from grapes grown in the largest grape growing areas in Australia. All the wines that you will taste at the Australian Inland Wine Show contain at least 85% of grapes sourced from any of the following areas: the Victorian and New South Wales sides of the Murray River from Kangaroo Lake, Swan Hill, Wemen, Robinvale/Euston, Sunraysia and the South Australian Riverland from Renmark to Waikerie; the lower Darling River from Wentworth to Menindee; and the MIA, based around Darlington Point, Griffith and Leeton. Section 7, the large volume class, consists of entries that contain at least 60% of grapes sourced from the areas above. The class system. Entries are placed in one of nine sections, based on vintage (year of production), volume produced or wine style. Each section is further divided into classes, each of which has a common variety or blend of varieties or common wine style. How the wines are judged. The results that you see in this catalogue are very fresh; judging occurred just two weeks ago. There were two separate panels of judges, each consisting of three judges and two associate judges. The judges have full voting rights ; the associate judges score each wine but their scores are not included in the point scores that you see in this catalogue. The judges and associate judges individually assess each wine in the class. Once a class of wines has been assessed, the judges and associate judges sit down and discuss their opinions and scores on each wine. The Chairman of the Panel of Judges (Chris Killeen) ensures that the judging process flows smoothly. He adjudicates in cases of split decisions, where judges on the same panel may have slight differences of opinion in they way they allocate points for a particular wine. This is particularly important where gold or silver medals are awarded. Awarding points to each wine. Every wine entered into the show is awarded points. The three full judges in each panel score each wine out of 20. Typically, they score out of 3 for colour, out of 7 for bouquet and out of 10 for palate. In scoring each wine, the judges also consider how well the wine fits into its class. For instance, in other words, each judge scores each wine out of 20. Once a class has been judged, the scores of the three full judges in each panel are added up. The points that you see in the catalogue are therefore wine scores out of 60. Gold medal wines score 55.5 points or more. Silver medals are awarded to wines that score 51.0 to 55.0 points. Bronze medals are awarded to wines that score 46.5 to 50.5 points. Very Highly Commended wines score 55.5 points or more but are unavailable commercially. Highly Commended are wines that score between 51.0 to 55.0 points but are not commercially available. Commended are wines that score between 46.5 to 50.5 points but are not commercially available. Page 2

3 A message from the Chairman of the Committee Welcome to the 25th Australian Inland Wine Show. I am sure you will agree with me when I say, the Wine Show has come a long way since Les Oxley and some enthusiastic helpers started it 25 years ago. The Show Committee is now an independent incorporated body, with many new members coming from backgrounds other than wine grape production. Support from the wineries to our show has been magnificent despite a difficult time for the industry (both grape and wine production). Despite a small drop in entry numbers, the quality of entries has improved over last year. The committee this year adopted a code of practice which formulates the way wineries can use show medals in advertising. This code of practice is now a condition of entry and I would hope put an end to doubtful advertising of bogus medals. This years sponsors have been very loyal to our committee, as many are long term supporters. On behalf of the committee I sincerely thank them all. The internet has now become our important part of the show s operation. Much information is on the website I would anticipate more information and more regular updates in the future. The committee is only as good as the people that drive it. My thanks to each and everyone of you for the work that has been put in, to culminate at this magnificent venue and the presentation of trophies and awards. I trust everyone enjoys the evening and visitors feel welcome in Swan Hill. John Ward Chairman Chairman of Judges Report The 25th Inland Wine Show has been successfully organised and completed by a dedicated group of wine grape growers and assistants. I congratulate them on their efficient running of the event. While entries were slightly down on last year the total number of medals awarded was up, indicating that the overall quality of wines entered in the show continues to improve. Despite no gold medals being awarded to any dry white table wines this year, the general quality of the whites was still quite solid. The dry reds however, were once again of high standard, particularly the varieties of Petit Verdot and Durif. The success of these two varieties in recent years tends to support the view that they perform well in the warmer climate conditions of the inland grape growing regions.
