While you re here, be sure to try some regional wines: the quality and unique character of Montenegrin - as well as Croatian and Serbian - wines has become quite compelling in recent years. When it comes to reliability, our focus is on service as well as our products. To ensure the best possible quality, we purchase all of our wines directly from the producer - never second hand - or, in the case of Bordeaux alone, only from the most reliable negoçiants. We also ship directly from their cellars to ours in our dedicated climate-controlled vehicles. In this way, we always know exactly where a bottle of wine has been - and exactly how it has been treated and stored - since it was a grape in the vineyard to a glass on your table. 3 THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LL READ THIS SUMMER: OK, maybe not the most important thing, but this is pretty important for those who wish to take wine and spirits on board tax-free. Please review carefully, as the system in Montenegro may be easy... but it works a bit differently than elsewhere. TAX-FREE ALLOWANCES There are two ways in which a boat may take tax-free wine and spirits on board: A) Static Charter: while you are in Montenegro, your allowance at the time of delivery is up to 1 litre per person, per day remaining in the country. This means that if you have six people on board, and will be staying in Montenegro for another five days, you may take 30 litres of wine. What s important to remember is that the calculation is based on the number of days between the delivery day and your departure day. This option is ideal for those boats that are picking up guests in Montenegro and want their wine on board early. Please just remember that, the earlier you take delivery, the higher your allowance will be. B) On Departure: at the time you check out (on the fuel or customs quay) you may take up to three litres per person on board. So if you now have 15 people on board, then you may take 45 litres of wine and spirits tax-free. To increase your allowance, you may combine both options, provided that you don t count the same day twice. Please note that the allowance is based only on the total number of people on board at the time of delivery (i.e. the combined number on your official crew and passenger lists). Those not yet on board - such as charter guests yet to arrive - may not be counted. THREE EASY STEPS TO GETTING YOUR WINE 1) First, decide what you want! Select your wines from this catalogue or feel free to send us your preference sheet and we will quickly put together some options for you. Please confirm availaility with us, as it s not invoncievable that one or two of the rare wines will run out at some point. 2) At the time of delivery, we will come to the boat to collect some documents for customs clearance. Please have the following items ready for us: A photocopy of your boat s registration certificate Your official crew list, stamped by the harbour master and with vignette attached (the original copy) Your official passenger list, stamped by the harbour master (the original copy) Your boat s stamp 3) After customs reviews everything - this usually takes about 15 minutes - we will come back to the boat to return your documents, deliver the wine and collect paymemt. So you see, it s very easy and you don t even have to leave your boat! The only critical thing is ensuring that your documents are in order and that the delivery is within you tax-free allowance. By the way, items that you may buy with tax included, such as local wines from Crush Wine Station, do not count towards your allowance. So if you need more than your allowance permits, Crush is a good place to top up. If you have any questions, please just ask. 5 SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE LOUIS ROEDERER BRUT PREMIER SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE NON-VINTAGE BRUT CHAMPAGNE In 2015, the Revue de Vin de France named Louis Roederer the world s #1 Champagne House. Unlike most Champagne producers, Louis Roederer is family-owned, and owns most of its own vineyards, now 240 hectares located exclusively in the Grands and Premiers Cru of the Marne. This gives the House unparalleled control over quality, something that is reflected in its flagship Brut Premier. A blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, it is a full, complex wine that is both rich and powerful, whilst remaining a great classic. We are pleased to offer this excellent Champagne in three different formats. Champagne is the perfect wine for celebrating a wedding, a birthday, the beginning of dinner, the start of a charter and the launch of a ship. We all know Madame Bollinger s famous ode, reprinted below. The idea behind a nonvintage Champagne is to achieve a consistent style by blending the base wines from several years. Apparently, it is quite possible to make great Champagne that doesn t cost a small fortune. Ripe pears, smoke, spices, dried flowers and herbs are some of the many nuances that emerge from the glass. The Brut Premier shows lovely mid-palate depth and fabulous overall balance. - The Wine Advocate I drink it when I m happy and when I m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I m alone. 6 SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE NON-VINTAGE ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE VINTAGE BRUT CHAMPAGNE Rosé Champagne has never been more popular. In addition to its seductive colour, rosé Champagne has a fruitier flavour profile than its Brut cousins. It is exceptionally food friendly and can often be paired more successfully. The colour in rosé Champagne is achieved in two ways: the traditional (and most common) way is known as the saignée method, which extracts colour from the black Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes when they are pressed. The alternative is to add a little still Pinot Noir wine to the blend, which has the dual benefit of adding both colour and richness to the Champagne. Vintage Champagne is a rarity, comprising only about 10% of the region s total production. On average, producers will declare about three out of every ten years. The base wine is always made not only from grapes raised in a particularly fine single season, but also from those higher-quality, better-tended vineyards and sites. All of this the better beginning, the longer aging conspires to create a wine that sports more nuance, greater layering of flavor, increased complexity and greater aging potential than nonvintage Champagne. They also complements slightly sweet desserts with fresh red fruit. Most of these wines should be consumed on their own, or with an equally compelling pairing such as caviar or lobster. 7 SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE VINTAGE BLANC DE BLANCS CHAMPAGNE SPARKLING WINE - CHAMPAGNE VINTAGE ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE Blanc de Blancs, with its elegant and lithe style, is the Champagne for serious oenophiles. A French term that means white from whites this denotes sparkling wines made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. These examples from Louis Roederer come from two exceptional grand cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs - Avize and Le Mesnil-sur- Oger - where Chardonnay grapes attain optimal maturity on calcerous soils. The wine is aged on the lees for five years and then left for an additional six months after disgorgement. Of the 2009 vintage, Roger Voss wrote: a beautiful wine, so crisp, taut and refreshing. It brings out the fragrance and freshness of the... Côte de Blancs, fruity with apples and citrus. Vintage rosé is the most rarified version of Champagne. Often produced in miniscule quantities, top marques such as Cristal are made using the saignée method (where the colour comes from short contact with the skin of the grapes during maceration) rather than the blending of red and white wines common to some non-vintage rosé Champagnes. While Bollinger, Cristal and Dom Perignon represent the greatest examples of this category, the Louis Roederer Vintage Rosé offers exceptional quality at a price more consistent with non-vintage Champagnes. 8 SPARKLING WINE - TRADITIONAL METHOD SPARKLING WINE FROM FRANCE & ITALY Franciacorta is Italy s top region for Champagne- or traditional-method sparkling wines, made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Ca del Bosco is one of the region s top producers and their Cuvée Annamaria Clementi - named for the founder s mother - is the estate s top bottling. It is aged for a minimum of 7 years on the lees prior to release, a longer time than most top Champagnes. Our other offering on this page - a rich and elegant Crémant from France s Loire Valley - is also made in the Champagne style. 9 SPARKLING WINE - TRADITIONAL METHOD REGIONAL SPARKLING WINE SPARKLING WINE - PROSECCO PROSECCO SUPERIORE - VALDOBBIADENE D.O.C.G. Central Serbia possess a terroir that is ideal for the production of sparkling wines but, until recently, the country s producers lacked the knowledge to create them on a world class level. To solve that, Trijumf is a joint-venture of sorts that brings together Serbia s top producer - Vinarija Aleksandrović - with the Institute of Oenology in Champagne. The 2009 vintage represents the pinnacle of their achievement, two Champagne-method sparkling wines that won the gold and silver medals, respectively, at the World Sparkling Wine Championships, hosted in London by Decanter Magazine in The popularity of Prosecco seems to be boundless. Once a niche sparkling wine, it has now overtaken even Champagne in some markets. This is not just because it is cheaper than Champagne, of course: many consumers prefer Prosecco s lighter, fruitier style, expecially as an aperitif or mid-afternoon drink. Plus, who doesn t like a bellini? Either way, Prosecco can be wonderful, especially if you drink the right ones... that s why of our wines in this category are Prosecco Superiore - the best of the best - and all come from the top, historical production area of Valdobbiadene DOCG. 11 ROSÉ ROSÉ MONTENEGRO & THE ADRIATIC REGION CÔTES DE PROVENCE, FRANCE Proving that the fashion for rosé continues unabated, many of the better producers along the Adriatic have started to create their own pink wines, and with considerable success. The Burić example listed below is made from the local grape variety Vranac, which is full of red fruit flavours. Castel Savina makes theirs from Grenache - one of the main grapes used in Provençal rosé. From the northern Adriatic, Korta Katarina is made from Croatia s local, robust Plavac Mali grape while Bruno Trapan makes his from 70% Teran. Slovenia s Batič rosé - arguably the region s most famous - is 100% Cabernet-Sauvignon and ever so slightly effervescent. Rosé wine has been the specialty of Provence for generations and accounts for a whopping 88% of the region s total production. But that is no surprise, as the climate, soils and grape varietals are all perfectly suited to making delicious rosé. With so many to choose from, we at Berba have selected some of the best and most famous examples... all crisp and dry. Provençal rosé is the quintessential summer wine and is best consumed on its own or at lunch. 13 MONTENEGRO MONTENEGRO WHITE WINES RED WINES - VRANAC White wine is a new phenomenon in Montenegro... the only commonly found local varietal, Krstač, is a bit underwhelming (and hard to pronounce). In the last few years, local producers have been experimenting with international varietals, most notably Chardonnay. Despite the hot climate, these wines tend to be fairly lightbodied with more cirtus-leaning aromas. They forgo malolactic fermentation and show little or no oak (in sharp contrast to, say, those produced in other hot climates like Sicily or Australia, which have more tropical, vanilla and wood nuances). These local white wines are definitely worth a try... Jancis Robinson MW describes Vranac - Montenegro s indigenous red varietal - as having enormous potential, and thanks to the efforts of the small, artisanal producers we ve included below, that potential is being happily realized. The name of the wine means black stallion, so it should be immediately apparent that these are powerful wines that should ideally be consumed with food. These local whites can be paired successfully with light-bodied dishes including grilled white fish, salads and green vegetables such as artichokes. Vranac pairs well with grilled meats, sausage, and barbecue, though the classic Montenegrin pairing is local (Njegoši) prosciutto and hard cheese

14 MONTENEGRO RED WINES - OTHER VARIETALS CROATIA REGIONAL WHITE WINES Perhaps you are interested to try some better known international varietals from Montenegrin vineyards? We can offer a Cabernet-Sauvignon and a Merlot, but also another domestic varietal called Kratošija. This is a lighter, fruitier grape varietal normally used as part of a blend... the way that Gaja, say, blends a portion of Barbera to Nebbiolo (in Sperss) in order to add some colour and fruit flavours. If you like Barbera, then you may enjoy Kratošija. Arhonto s Cabernet-Sauvignon is 100% varietal though Castel Savina s Merlot is blended with 20% Grenache. Malvazija is the quintessential Croatian grape, and it finds its ultimate expression in Istria (the diamond-shaped peninsula located just south of Trieste). This is a perfect summer wine: light, crisp and flavourful with citrus and white flower aromas. Trapan s Malvazija Ponente is very light and aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The Clai wines are very different. These are exceptional wines made in the Jura orange wine style... long maceration yields a very rich, dense set of flavours that are best with food. It s a big wine, a genetic cross between California s Zinfandel and Italy s Primitivo. Plavac Mali is grown in the south of Croatia, in the area around Dubrovnik and the Peljašac Peninsula (just across from Korčula). But there are other varietals too, most notably Teran from Istria, and we are delighted to offer a perfectly aged example of this wine from Roxanich. For more international varietals, Croatia can offer Bordeaux-style wines at great prices, and from top producers such as Dubrovački Podrumi, Meneghetti and Roxanich. Among the regional reds we have selected a broad range of styles: a light and rustic Pinot Noir from central Serbia, a well-aged Merlot from Slovenia, and the award-winnig wines of Macedonia, both of which are made from indigenous grape varietals. The Mount Nelson is a classic for the region with cirtus and gooseberry notes and a refreshing acidity. The Ram s Hill is a reserve wine with more complex aromas, very subtle oak and, on the palate, is creamy and textured with a fresh acidity to give balance and backbone. The Aussie wines are full-bodied, warm climate whites from a spectacular terroir in Victoria state. Like many Australian reds, the Mathilda is a classic Rhône blend but with a distinctly Australian touch. Michel Chapoutier is one of the great contemporary vignerons of the Rhône Valley, and with these bottles he takes his expertise to Australia. 20 AUSTRIA - WACHAU (WHITE) GRÜNER VELTLINER RIESLING AUSTRIA - WACHAU (WHITE) Grüner Veltliner is Austria s signature white wine grape. Twenty years ago almost no one outside Austria had heard of it... now, every self-respecting wine list from London to Sydney has at least one example of this delicious wine. The name literally means green grape and it has been unfairly described by some as an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc, but it s much, much more and also capable of long-term aging. When young, the wine typically offers quite distinct aromas of golden delicious apple, citrus, white pepper, some lychee and delicate herbal notes. As it ages, it develops rich flavours of exotic fruits was a stellar year in the Wachau and so we are pleased to offer several examples from two of the region s best producers. Young Austrian Rieslings exude a charming fruitiness and flavour, and can develop into great and complex wines through ageing. For these, notes of stone fruit are dominant and include peach, apricot and exotic fruits. Wines especially from the terroirs of the Wachau - such as these below - reflect a minerality reminiscent of slate or flint. Because Riesling is a late-ripening grape, the best examples come from south-facing vineyards located on steep slopes along the Danube... this maximizes their exposure to both the sun and warmth. 21 CHILE CHILE MAIPO VALLEY Maipo Valley is one of Chile s most important wine-producing regions. Located just south of the capital, Santiago, Maipo Valley is home to some of the country s most prestigious wines including Almaviva, a joint-venture between Concha y Toro, one of Chile s most established producers, and Château Mouton-Rothschild in Bordeaux. The Maipo is often described as the Bordeaux of South America, and rich, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly its most celebrated wine style. On a related note, Carmenère is a dark-skinned grape variety originally from Bordeaux, but which has found a particularly suitable home in Chile. The wines are always 100% Chardonnay. 25 FRANCE - BURGUNDY (WHITE) THE MÂCONNAIS & CÔTE CHALONNAIS FRANCE - BURGUNDY (WHITE) THE CÔTE D OR Lying south of the Côte d Or and just north of Lyon, the Mâconnais is one of Burgundy s best-value white wine regions. Its wines used to be fairly simple, but since the late 1990s many producers have been making elegant wines that are full of charm. Different families of aromas make up the bouquet: mineral notes (silex), almond and hazelnut, citrus notes (lemon, grapefruit, and pineapple), white fruits (peaches), bracken, acacia, breadcrumbs, buttered brioche, and honey. The texture is opulent and the structure, thanks partly to the wine s natural richness, is full of flavour. The three famous villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet lie in the heart of the Côte de Beaune and are known for the quality and predominance of their white wines (all 100% Chardonnay). The vineyards are spread over gentle slopes with an eastern orientation, allowing for maximum sunlight. The soils are chalky with white marl. Chassagne s style is often described as lying between that of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault: less fine than Puligny, less rich than Meursault but containing elements of both. Some of these are so small that it is impossible to bottle each of them separately... thus a wine like the Beaune 1er Cru du Château (from Bouchard) will include grapes from several Premier Cru vineyards blended together. These wines typically offer a silky gold colour, flecked with green, and a bouquet of almond, dried fruits, bracken, and white flowers. Pernand-Vergelesses, from the northern part of the region, is known for its excellent value, particularly in the hands of an accomplished producer such as Joseph Drouhin. The style of white Chassagne-Montrachet is often both fruity and mineral, with the level of oak varying between producers. There are 50 different climats within the appellation that are classified as Premier Cru. A typical Meursault has a richness of flavor and a creamy texture that sometimes leads the wines to be called buttery. There are about 20 different Premier Cru designations in Meursault, the three most celebrated of which are Charmes, Genevrières and Perrières... we have included a wine from each of these in our offer. The Blagny Premier Cru is located to the south of the appellation and produces less complex but still delicious and good value wines. If the terroir of Montrachet is perfect for the production of Chardonnay, then the terroir of Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru - immediately adjacent - is almost perfect, yielding phenomonal wines that, while not cheap, are certainly a bargain compared to the Grand Cru. These wines are typically a bright gold colour. The bouquet brings together hawthorn blossoms, ripe grapes, marzipan, hazelnut, amber, lemon-grass and green apple. 28 FRANCE - BURGUNDY (WHITE) GRAND CRU - BÂTARD- & CHEVALIER-MONTRACHET FRANCE - BURGUNDY (WHITE) GRAND CRU - MONTRACHET Above Montrachet proper is the vineyard of Chevalier Montrachet, and just below lies Bâtard Montrachet. The names of these two Grand Crus supposedly reflect the division of the estate of the Seigneur de Montrachet between his two sons, one of whom had been a knight in the Crusades, the other was illegitimate. Puligny also contains the small Grand Cru of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Next to Montrachet itself, these are the most famous vineyards in Burgundy, if not the world, and offer some of the best conditions for the production of Chardonnay grapes. Demand massively outstrips supply, however, so these wines are hard to come by and very expensive. This is the epicentre of great Chardonnay. The vineyard itself straddles the townships of both Puligny and Chassagne... wines from Puligny are called Montrachet while those from Chassagne are often labelled Le Montrachet. Within the vineyard, the plots belonging to the Marquis de Laguiche - which are managed by Maison Joseph Drouhin - are thought to be of incomparable quality. These are all superb, rich and complex wines, with peach and pastry notes as well as varying touches of fine French oak. These are seamless examples of Chardonnay with a hugely long finish. 29 FRANCE - BURGUNDY (WHITE) GRAND CRU - CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE This ancient vineyard, once owned by the Emperor Charlemagne, produces a powerful, rich and mineral wine with intense flavour of fruits and flowers, and aromas of pepper, honey, vanilla and cinammon. According to legend, the vineyard was originally planted with red varietals but Charlemagne s wife - said to be displeased with red wine dripping on the Emperor s white beard - ordered that a section of the hill be pulled up and replanted with white grape varieties. Today Corton-Charlemagne is 100% Chardonnay. 30 FRANCE - BURGUNDY (RED) BEAUJOLAIS & THE CÔTE CHALONNAIS THE CÔTE D OR FRANCE - BURGUNDY (RED) Located in the south of Burgundy, Beaujolais makes fresh and fruity red wines from the Gamay grape. At the top of the region s quality pyramid come the wines from the crus, including Brouilly, Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin-à- Vent. These are made from grapes grown on particularly favoured slopes, and each has its own appellation offering a spectrum of styles, from fresh and bright (Fleurie being the closest on this list) to fairly serious and ageworthy (Morgon & Moulin-a-Vent). Within the Côte Chalonnais, Mercurey is the most widely recognised and important appellation. The wines, made from Pinot Noir, offer a deeper colour and greater concentration. Village-level red Burgundies are produced from vineyards lying on the extension of the slope on which the Grand and Premier Crus are located. These vineyards vary considerably in quality, so the name of the producer is thus more important than elsewhere. We have included in our list two of the most reliable: Drouhin and Faiveley. As with all red Burgundy, these wines are 100% Pinot Noir. Bouchard s Vigne De L Enfant Jésus is one of the flagship wines of this appelation, coming from the climat Les Grèves in the centralnorthern part of the commune. It has been owned by Bouchard since The wine offers superb fruit and spice aromas with an oaky note. Intense, full and yet delicate on the palate, the wine has a charming velvetiness was a premium vintage for this wine. Savigny-les-Beaune produces wines of ample body and discreet tannins with good fruit flavours, including a hint of Morello cherry. Wines from Pommard tend to deep, dark red with mauve highlights. Their colour is usually an intense crimson with a hint of mauve. The nose often features rose and liquorice. Younger versions will offer aromas of cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant while more mature wines will exhibit notes of leather, truffle, prune and game. Faiveley, one of the top negoçiants in Burgundy, is based in Nuits-Saint-Georges and thus owns a lot of the best terroir in the area... their wines are a great reference for the appellation. These wines from the northern part of the Côte d Or offer aromas of strawberry, raspberry, black currant, violet and rose. More maturity brings out liquorice, leather and fur, with gamey notes and hints of underbrush. Chambolle-Musigny is often regarded as the most feminine wine of these wines, though its delicate but fleshy texture in no way detracts from its solid and durable structure. Gevrey-Chambertin is fullbodied, powerful, rich, and meaty, offering a firm structure, velvety tannins and delicate texture on the palate. Vosne-Romanée is velvety and distinguished - Pinot Noir at the top of its form. Corton reds are an intense velvety crimson, darkening towards magenta. Their generous aromatic expression is of fruit notes (blueberry, gooseberry, kirsch cherry) or flowers (violet), evolving towards underbrush, animal, leather, fur, pepper and liquorice. On the palate this wine is well-built, powerful and muscular and the chewy body comes to the fore. Firm, frank and fat, it requires time (4-12 years) to reach its peak. The Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits are iconic Pinot Noir with aromas of strawberry, blackcurrant, and gooseberry as well as fruit pits, liquorice, and spices. Violet, moss and underbrush are also likely to be present. On the palate, power, opulence and elegance unite to make a full and complex body. Although these sumptuous Grands Crus share a family resemblance, each has its own distinctive nuances. Clos de Vougeot and Clos de la Roche are masterful, rich, succulent and mellow, combining elegance and delicacy with meaty fullness. Echezeaux offers more mushroom and leather notes. 35 FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) HAUT MÉDOC MARGAUX FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) The Haut-Médoc, basically the area in the Médoc that does not fall into one of the four wine villages (Pauillac, Margaux, St-Julien and St-Estèphe), is nonetheless a mainstay of Bordeaux wine. In general, this is more of an area for value than absolute quality and luxury. That being said, the wines listed below are among the best château in the region. Château Camensac is a classified growth and, though not classified, Château La Lagune remains a flagship of the region. Just like the rest of the Médoc, gravel is common in the Haut-Médoc and as a result the Cabernet Sauvignon grape is prominent. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are commonly used to soften the wine, and in the case of La Lagune some Petit Verdot as well. Margaux is the smallest of the four Médoc villages. Its wines are known for being full-bodied, but they tend to be lighter and have a softer texture than the more intense wines of neighboring appellations. Margaux grape varieties tend to parallel those of the Médoc in general. A typical vineyard blend is 75% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The signature flavours of Margaux include ripe dark berries, truffles, tobacco, cassis and violets. 36 FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) PAUILLAC PESSAC-LÉOGNAN FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) Pauillac is home to several of the world s most famous wines. Like its neighbouring villages of the Médoc, Pauillac was first converted into winemaking territory in the 1700s, when foreigners saw promise in the marshy land and undertook a lengthy excavation of it. While the maritime climate of Pauillac is very similar to that of the Médoc in general, its slightly higher elevation and gravel content in the soil make Cabernet Sauvignon richer and more full-bodied, and many purists consider the grape to be at its prime in this appellation. These wines are typically about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with one notable exception: Château Pichon-Longueville Comtess de Lalande is usually only about half Cabernet-Sauvignon in the blend. Pessac-Léognan was once a part of the gargantuan appellation known as Graves, which dominated early winemaking in Bordeaux. Both its red and white wines garnered international attention for their heaviness, mineral flavors, and generally full-bodied nature. The Pessac-Léognan AOC was only created in 1987, as a way to distinguish the best terroir and highest quality châteaux within one appellation. 37 FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) POMEROL SAINT ÉMILION FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) Pomerol is a tiny village on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, with less than three square miles of area. Nonetheless, this miniscule appellation s wines define the Merlot grape at its very best, bringing the grape to its maximum of elegance, richness, and complexity. While the maritime influence is less than in the Médoc, the real distinction of Pomerol is its clay soil, possibly the most concentrated of anywhere in Bordeaux. Gravel also plays some part, but is nowhere near as prominent as on the other side of the rivers. Merlot is the dominant grape - by a significant margin - with Carbernet Franc playing a supporting role. The wines of St-Émilion bear a distinctive softness and approachability found in no other appellation for red Bordeaux. Calling red wines approachable and easy to drink would be an insult on the Left Bank, but in Right Bank St-Émilion the softness and light sweetness of Cabernet Franc and Merlot are hallmarks of the appellation. With time, the best wines mature to a silky complexity. The truly crucial difference in St-Émilion is the soil. While gravel banks are outstandingly prevalent in the Médoc and in the appropriately named Graves, St-Émilion is an altogether different story. 38 FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) SAINT ESTÈPHE SAINT JULIEN FRANCE - BORDEAUX (RED) St. Estèphe is the northernmost and largest of the four major wine-producing villages of the Médoc. St-Estèphe s gravel banks are much closer to the surface and much more prevalent than those in Margaux and St-Julien. In fact, they rival Pauillac for their concentration, depth, and their location nearly everywhere in the appellation. As a result, the wines are deep, rich, and almost black in color at first. After a few years of aging, however, they open up and show their full potential. There are, however, certain examples of more modern producers that create more approachable wines, such as Château Beau Site. St. Julien is known for its production of remarkably full-bodied Bordeaux blends. Its distinction is the unusual woody flavour that comes through after many years of aging, often compared to cedar or old cigar boxes. St. Julien s gravel banks, like those of Pauillac, give the tannins and body an intense and powerful flavour that nicely supports the wine s well-defined aromas. These wines can be sternly structured, but are rarely too austere to drink even when relatively youthful. In other words, they possess a good balance. The appellation is not packed as densely with vineyards and châteaux as the other villages, but it contains a large number of wineries at many different levels of expense and quality. 40 FRANCE - LOIRE VALLEY (WHITE) POUILLY FUMÉ FRANCE - LOIRE VALLEY (WHITE) SANCERRE Founded in 1396, Château de Tracy sits atop a prominent limestone outcropping overlooking the Loire River. Historical documents confirm that vines have been grown on the property for over 600 years. This is one of the finest domaines in the Loire valley. These are classic Pouilly-Fumé and some of the greatest examples of Sauvignon Blanc. Made from a careful selection of the best grapes grown in flint and Kimméridgian limestone, these wines are noted for their complexity of flavour as well as their ability to age and evolve over time. The white wines of Sancerre (100% Sauvignon Blanc) are among the most celebrated in the world. The region comprises three main soil types and each yields a wine with unique character: Terres Blanches ( white earth ) is compact chalk atop kimmeridgean marl; Les Caillottes is gravel and limestone; and Silex (flint). Domaine Vacheron - probably the region s most prestigious property - produces Sancerre from each soil type. Their Les Romains lieu-dit is from Silex (so is the wine from Château de Fontaine-Audon) while Paradis is from hard limestone soils. For almost a century the estate s wines have been the standard-bearers for great, age-worthy Chenin Blanc. The estate produces some of the world s most compelling white wines. Le Clos du Bourg is the oldest site in the appellation of Vouvray, dating back to the eighth century. It is also believed to be the most approachable when young: with the Première Côte s shallowest, stoniest soils, its wines often synthesize an intense minerality with a generous texture. Vacheron s La Bella Dame comes from 50 years old Pinot Noir vines on rocky, flint soils and offers a seriously delicate, precise and fleshy bouquet of truly ripe, juicy and thickly skinned dark fruits (cherries, blackthorn, black berries) along with lovely floral and herbal aromas and peppery flavors. Pinot Noir is usually an afterthought in Sancerre but at Domaine Vacheron it comprises 25% of all grape production, only the best of which make it into this bottling. In quality - though not in price - it competes with many Premier and Grand Cru Burgundy wines, though is somewhat fresher and lighter. 43 FRANCE - ALSACE (WHITE) GEWÜRZTRAMINER & PINOT GRIS RIESLING FRANCE - ALSACE (WHITE) Alsace is one of the great, under-appreciated treasures of the wine world and Domaines Weinbach and Zind- Humbrecht are among Alsace s greatest producers. Between them they make many of the region s most thrilling wines. Both estates have altrered their viticultural practices in recent decades in an effort to produce grapes that achieve ripeness earlier, with less sugar and greater acidity. In the result, their wines are typically dry, though not the Rangen de Thann listed below which is both rich and a little bit sweet. The Gewurzt is full-bodied, almost fat, and tastes pleasantly off-dry with lychee-like aromas. The Pinot Gris is not like Italian Pinot Grigio... here it is full bodied and tastes delightfully smoky and exotic. By any estimation, Alsace is one of the planet s greatest places to grow Riesling. While there are sweeter examples availabe, it is typically dry, stony, taut, complex and at times quite majestic. They can be steely in their youth. The Grand Cru wines of Alsace usually have higher minimum alcohol levels which require much riper grapes, so these wines can therefore be rich, honeyed (even if they are dry) and age-worthy. With time they take on seductive smoky notes. 45 FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (WHITE) RHÔNE VALLEY & CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (WHITE) ERMITAGE BLANC The vineyards of the northern Rhône are probably the oldest in France, and also the steepest. Etched into the mountainside on narrow terraces, some are so steep that they require pulley systems to harvest grapes. Two of the most famous producers - whose wines are sought after worldwide- are Guigal and Chapoutier. Condrieu is the home of Viognier, producing savoury wines with heady apricot and floral notes, and a rich honeyed mouthfeel. White Hermitage (or Ermitage) was once a favourite of Russian nobility and is made from Marsanne and Roussanne grapes. It is unusually full-bodied and can be difficult to appreciate until its bouquet has developed after a few years in bottle. Côtes-du-Rhône - a blend of mostly Viognier - is much easier to appreciate in its youth. Ermitage wines possess a rich historical past; they were appreciated as early on as Roman times. The name of Ermitage probably first appeared in the 17th Century in memory of Henry Gaspard, a knight from Stérimberg who, having come back from the Crusades in the 13th Century and tired of waging war, lived as a hermit on a hillside which had been given to him by Anne of Castille, Queen of Spain. There he planted a vineyard. Honeysuckle, caramelized citrus, white peach, quince and white currant characteristics are viscous and full-bodied, yet the wine possesses striking precision and laser-like focus. This monumental effort is the most opulent and richest of all Chapoutier s dry whites in Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Rhône whites pair with a wide variety of foods including shellfish, white meat, risotto, cannelloni with ricotta, crab cakes, escargots, poultry/vegetable patés, potato salad, scallops and classic Thai foods. Due to its thick, often rich concentration, cream dishes and buttery courses make excellent matches. 46 FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (RED) FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (RED) CÔTE-RÔTIE The Côtes-du-Rhône is really the entry-level classification for the region. The Belleruche is a Grenache / Syrah blend that is perfect for everyday drinking. Les Varonniers is one of the greatest wines from the large Crozes- Hermitage appellation and offers notes of truffles, blackberries, asphalt, barbecue smoke, pen ink and steak tartare in addition to abundant minerality. The Gigondas (95% Grenache, 5% Syrah) boasts awesome aromatics of cassis, toasted spice, licorice, ground herbs and a massive minerality. On the palate it is full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a richness that comes through on the finish. The Côte-Rôtie is actually a series of roasted slopes folded above the little town of Ampuis. Those to the south are collectively known as the Côte Blonde and the wines they produce mature rather earlier than those produced on the Côte Brune to the north, although traditionally the wines from these areas have been blended. Côte-Rôtie is stereotypically distinguished from Hermitage by its perfume, which is in some cases due to the inclusion of a small proportion of white Viognier grapes (about 7%)... otherwise it is all Syrah. This is the perfect terroir for Syrah, and the wines exhibit violet, crème de cassis, vanilla bean, smoked meat and licorice notes. 1) Côtes-du-Rhône Belleruche M. Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate A wine I ve been lucky enough to have numerous times recently, the 2003 Cote Rotie Chateau d Ampuis is an off-the-hook effort that gives up plenty of plum sauce, smoked duck, licorice, tar, vanilla bean and violet aromas and flavors. It has awesome freshness and focus to go with full-bodied richness, a hedonistic texture and a blockbuster-styled finish. While it s not for those craving delicate-styled aromas and textures, I think it s a gorgeous effort that will continue to drink nicely over the coming decade or more. 47 FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (RED) ERMITAGE (RED) FRANCE - RHÔNE VALLEY (RED) CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, vines have been grown on the Hermitage hill since Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. All 100% Syrah, the wines are powerful, with a deep colour, firm tannins, aromas of leather, coffee, cassis, blackberry and smoked earth and the potential to age for many decades. These lieu-dit wines - the H is often dropped for the best crus - are produced in tiny quantities, sometimes as few as 350 cases per year. In the 17th Century, Hermitage was the official wine in the French courts of King Louis XIII and his successor Louis XIV (the Sun King ) and was also used as a gift for visiting dignitaries and foreign royalty. This is the largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 80 growers, so the producer is quite an important benchmark of quality. Château de Beaucastel is the most famous producer: these gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending all of the 13 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah (Mont Redon does the same). Chapoutier s Barbe Rac, in contrast, is 100% Grenache from a single vineyard planted in It offers a perfume of kirsch liqueur, licorice, ground pepper, and just a hint of Provencal herbs. 48 SOUTHERN FRANCE FRANCE - PROVENCE (WHITE) DOMAINES OTT Established in 1935, the Clos Mireille vineyard has 47 hectares of mature vines in a location barely 100 yards from the Mediterranean Sea. This brilliant, pale gold colored wine is composed of 70% Semillon and 30% Rolle. It has a lemony nose with floral hints and nuances of yellow-fleshed fruit (peach and nectarine). 49 HUNGARY TOKAJI HUNGARY Mandolás wine comes from the Mandulas terroir, one of the Oremus vineyards in which only the Furmint grape variety is planted. One of the leading dry white wines of Hungary, it marks a rupture with the tradition of sweet wines from the zone. In fact, Mandolás was the first dry wine produced in the region of Tokaj. It is produced from grapes that are not affected by noble rot but express the mineral hints of its originally volcanic soil and matured in new Hungarian oak barrels. All this provides us with a fresh full-bodied wine with fruity aromas and mineral tones and a long finish. 1) Tokaji Dry Mandolas Oremus ml Refreshing with well-integrated oak flavors. Interestingly, Oremus is owned by Vega Sicilia, the great Spanish producer... Foreign ownership certainly recognizes the potential of Tokaj. It s up to the rest of us to have a look. The New York Times Aging cellars in Tokaji Fish, spicy dishes and white meats - such as roast pork and chicken - tend to pair very well with Furmint. 97

51 ITALY - ALTO ADIGE & THE VENETO (WHITE) ITALY - ALTO ADIGE & THE VENETO (RED) Vineyards in Alro Adige - or South Tyrol if you prefer its Austrian name - grow high up on Alpine hillsides, yielding wines that are fresh, crisp and with a refreshing acidity. This is an area rich in minerals, the result of ice age sedimentation. All of that makes Alto Adige whites ideal summer wines, and they are often incredibly good value considering their quality. Girlan s top-tier Flora range routinely wins the top awards in Italian wine, for example. Alois Lageder is one of the best-known producers in the area, but perhaps the real star in this list is Girlan s Pinot Grigio: it is light, crisp and dry, complemented by aromas of lemon, green apple and blossom. Deep opaque red with violet tinged edges, Amarone (from an area between Lake Garda and Verona) is a rich, powerful wine offering aromas of baked fruit cooked with herbs and spices. The alcohol content, around 16% but balanced, cuts the sweetness on the palate. Cherry fruit preserve and cinnamon are the major components in a long-lasting and attractive finish. These are often thought to be wines for meditation, but they can also work with food (see below). Graziano Prà is a smaller, artisinal producer with exceptional vineyard holdings... he produces only a small amount of wine, much sought after by those in the know. 52 ITALY - FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA (WHITE) ITALY - FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA (WHITE) PREMIUM WINES: JERMANN Located in the north-east corner of the country, Friuli is said to produce many of the best dry white wines in Italy. They are generally fresh, lightly aromatic, with good weight and a dry, textural palate. Part of the reason is that it s blessed with a climate and geology that is ideal for white wine. Bordered to the north and east by the Alps, and the Adriatic Sea to the southeast, the vines tend to get a lot of sun along with cooling breezes that keep the grapes from over ripening as well as free from mold and rot. Many of these wines are single varietal - Sauvignon does particularly well here - though blends are a specialty of the region: Collio Col Disore is a blend of Pinot Bianco, Tocai Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc and Ribolla Gialla vinified in a richer style. Silvio Jermann has a well-deserved reputation for making some of Italy s best white wines, noted for their purity and depth of flavour coupled with huge mineral extract, all perfectly poised and in balance. Capo Martno is a blend of Malvasia, Tocai, Picolit and Ribolla. It is complex, nutty and toasty with lovely herb, nut, melon and grapefruit notes. Vintage Tunina is a field blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Picolit and Ribolla Gialla. There s a fresh lift to the stunningly complex mineral, spicy nose. The palate is fruit-forward with good acidity and some minerality providing a nice foil. W... 54 ITALY - FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA (WHITE) ITALY - FRIULI-VENEZIA-GIULIA (RED) PREMIUM WINES: MIANI FRIULANO Enzo Pontoni - the winemaker and owner of Miani - makes some of the richest and most daring wines in Friuli was a tough vintage that required a mercliess process of selection... hence these wines, produced in tiny quantities, are hard to find and have been elevated to cult status by collectors. His young Friulano comes from 40-year old vines while the single vineyard Buri and Filip come from 70-year-old vines. In all cases these are wines that stand out for their nuance and delineation. White orchard fruit, pears, flowers, crushed rocks and a hint of spice are some of the flabours and aromas that can be enjoyed. Friulian reds are characterized by their spicy, earthy notes. Jermann s cute and aptly-named Blau & Blau is a blend of Blaufrankisch (Franconia) with a dollop of Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) and offers notes of blackberries, blueberries, cloves, violets and minerals. Russiz Superiore s Riserva degli Orzone, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, is a wine of terrific balance offering sweet dark red fruit, grilled herbs, mocha and spice aromas. Finally, Bastianich s Vespa Rosso is a velvet and opulent red comprised of Merlot (50%), Refosco, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It has a darkly extracted appearance and black aromas of tar, prune and olive. Full-bodied but slightly off-dry. Like outstanding Amarone. Shellfish is also wonderful, though Mr. Galloni likes to pair his with an endive salad. Meant to be enjoyed in its youth, this is a great anytime white that is sure to please. Founded by Mario Moccagatta, the Villa Sparina estate is situated in Monterotondo, the heart of the Gavi district. The estate s strict practices of yield reduction and delayed harvest enable it to make a triumphant, definitive Gavi. Gaja is best known for the red wines it makes in Piedmont and Tuscany, but around 8% of its production is white. These include Rossj Bass (a Chardonnay with 5% Sauvignon Blanc) and, best of all, Gaia & Rey (100% Chardonnay). This is a wine that ages remarkably well and should - in its youth - be decanted and allowed to breathe for about an hour before you drink it. Gaia & Rey is now considered one of the greatest white wines of Europe, though its scarcity and price mean it s also one of the least accessible. The wine offers rich and complex aromas with hints of toast and vanilla, balanced by a lively acidity and a long, lingering finish on the palate. 57 ITALY - PIEDMONT (RED) BARBERA BARBARESCO, PRUNOTTO ITALY - PIEDMONT (RED) Barbera is an ancient grape varietal... pre-dating Cabernet-Sauvignon by about a thousand years. From the slopes of northern Italy it yields a wine that tastes both rich and light-bodied. Its light tannins, high acidity and notes of strawberry and sour cherry mean that it is often described as juicy but also make it an ideal summer wine, especially at lunch when a red wine is called for. GD Vajra s Barbera is a mid-weight version laced with sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. Braida s single vineyard Bricco dell Uccellone is perhaps the most famous example offering more dark fruit flavours and layers of graphite and mineral. Its 2009 vintage may be the best ever for this wine, now at peak maturity. Prunotto has vineyards in some of the best terroir in Piedmont and, over the last decade or so, has been making enormous improvements to its wine-making capabilities. The result is a delicate Barbaresco with crisp acidity, fine tannins and beautiful delineation. Thanks to our excellent relationship with the owners, we are able to offer a selection of vintages going back to 2003, directly from the estate s cellars. Bric Turot is a small but excellent cru within the township of Barbaresco. These wines offer a slightly darker color and similarly delicate tones of rose petal and dried spice. 58 ITALY - PIEDMONT (RED) BARBARESCO, GAJA BAROLO ITALY - PIEDMONT (RED) One of Italy s iconic wines, and the centerpiece of Gaja s portfolio, this Barbaresco is a testament to the Gaja family s historic commitment to the appellation and its belief that Barbaresco stands proudly with the great growing regions of the world. These wines are smooth and elegant with aromas of violet, rose, lush dark fruit and a whiff of cake spices. The seductive palate offers ripe black cherry, licorice and mocha alongside silky tannins. It is important to note that, in 2012, the single vineyards were not bottled, as they were not quite up to Gaja standards. The flagship Barbaresco thus benfitted from this as it received grapes from these top cru, elevating the wine further. Barolo has been called the King of Wine for centuries, and may be the most famous type of wine to hail from Italy. VAJRA Luciano Sandrone has risen rapidly to the top echelons of the Barolo wine world, producing wines made in the modern style: elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate when young.. but they possess no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. The estate s focus is on low yields (to ensure high quality) a relatively short maceration period (to ensure freshness) and a light touch of oak to preserve the delicate friut flavours of his best Nebbiolo. Only 10% of the barrels he uses for maturing the wine are new oak. The result is some of the most supple and complex Barolos being produced today. Bricco delle Viole is a vineyard known for the sublime elegance of its wines, qualities realized best by GD Vajra. Aldo Vajra, the winemaker, achieves spectacular results: fine, silky tannins caress the palate from start to finish as beautifully articulated, nuanced layers of fruit emerge from the glass. It has an amphitheatre shape and soils comprising marl, limestone, marine fossil sediments and plenty of iron. It is known for producing very concentrated, structured and firm wines with a lot of deep, rich aromas. Bussia is a relatively large vineyard by the standards of Barolo, so location does matter. Prunotto s holdings yield wines with intense aromas of plum and ripe cherry, and hints of flowers and spice. On the palate they are intense with soft tannins and a long finish. Not all Nebbiolo-based wines from Piedmont are Barolos and Barbarescos. Gaja s Sito Moresco is a blend of Nebbiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot designed more to showcase the terroir of Piedmont than to fit a type. But the real story here is Gaja s Sperss... which prior to 1986 was classified as a Barolo until Angelo Gaja decided that the wine could be improved through the addition of a small amount of Barbera (about 6%) as was traditionally done in the region. This, however, is against the appellation s rules - a Barolo must be 100% Nebbiolo - and so the wine is now labeled simply as Sperss. 61 CASTELLO DELLA SALA ITALY - UMBRIA (WHITE) Our only selection of wines from Umbria come from from Castello della Sala. Niccolò Antinori bought this 14th century castle in 1940, to provide a source of white wines to match the excellence of his Tuscan reds. Much experimentation followed, but when it was introduced in 1987, Cervaro della Sala instantly became one of Italy s defining white wines, as influential and sought-after as Tignanello. A blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Grechetto, Cervaro offers intense, complex aromas of citrus, pear and acacia flowers balanced with a hint of vanilla. On the palate it is full-bodied and well-structured with notes of butter, hazelnut and mineral. The Wine Advocate Castello della Sala in Umbria, near Orvieto Cervaro works beautifully with grilled tuna steaks, cous-cous with grilled salmon, lobster and shellfish and any sort of pasta with a cream or garlic sauce. 121

62 ITALY - LE MARCHE & ABRUZZO (WHITE) ITALY - LE MARCHE & ABRUZZO (RED) Verdicchio is sometimes described as a thinking person s Pinot Grigio. The Verdicchio del Castelli di Jesi offered below springs from limestone soils, channeling its minerality into the body of the wine. Verdicchio means little green one in Italian, and its straw color with green tinges reflect that. A flavour profile of fresh apples, lemon (fruit, peel, and flowers), herbaceous notes, wet stone, and a slightly bitter toasted almond finish form the base for the wine. With a crisp acidity and medium alcohol, it is food-friendly (especially to fish) and an excellent aperitif. The primary red grape in Le Marche and Abruzzo is Montepulciano... not to be confused with the village of the same name in Tuscany (where Sangiovese is grown). The grape has a deep purple and ruby color to its juice, relatively low acidity (for an Italian varietal anyway) and mild sweeter tannins. The resulting wines tend to be softer and more accessible than Chianti or Nebbiolo and, accordingly, the wines are nice pleasurable reds that go as well with food as without it. One of the great wines from Le Marche is the Conero Riserva, only produced in top vintages. It offers aromas of ripe dark fruits, spice, vanilla and tobacco. On the palate it has soft tannins with chocolate and oak flavours and a hint of minerality. This came back - in miniscule quantities - with the 2009 vintage and has proven to be enormously popular. 2013, with its exceptionally slow growing season, has proven to be remarkably favourable for the production of lively, generously-aromatic white wines. Anyone looking for a seriously impressive Sauvignon-based wine should consider the Poggio alle Gazze. Vistamare - from Gaja s Ca Marcanda estate - is also worth a look. This is a blend of Vermentino and Viognier and there is no mistaking its Mediterranean character of peach, apricot, sage and marine notes. For a refreshing, lighter, elegant wine with citrus notes, Guado al Tasso s 100% Vermentino certainly delivers. One of the best value wines in all of Italy, Villa Antinori Rosso was first produced in Mostly Sangiovese with small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, the wine shows intense and complex aromas of ripe red fruit, sweet spices, dried fruit and nuts. Firm bodied on the palate, the wine is round with supple and velvety tannins. The finish and aftertaste are long and savory. The Vino Nobile (90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot) offers aromas which range from ripe red fruit to spice and black pepper. On the palate the wine is supple and elegant with crisp mineral notes which are characteristic of its terroir. The clarity of fruit and beauty is superb with sliced melon, papaya, mineral, stone and apple. Hints of new wood too. Full body, some phenolic tension and a long and subtle finish. This is a white that will age beautifully. A blend of 70% sauvignon blanc and mostly viognier with a hint of sauvignon gris. Fermented in mostly old French oak barrels and aged for 12 months, with four or five months in bottle. Made from three small vineyards. The 2008 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, from La Braccesca, possesses excellent mid-palate fleshiness in its dark fruit, smoke, licorice and tobacco. Deceptively medium in body, the Vino Nobile impresses for its depth and fine overall balance. 65 ITALY - TUSCANY (RED) CHIANTI CLASSICO ITALY - TUSCANY (RED) CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA, MARCHESI ANTINORI One of the best-known Italian wines, the Chianti Classico zone covers approximately 7,000 hectares between Florence and Siena. Its vineyards stretch into the Apennine foothills at altitudes of between 150m and 500m. There are other Chianti zones, but those within the Classico denomination come from the best terrior and yield the best wines. The first classification of Chianti Classico was in 1716 when Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany identified the villages of Radda, Greve, Panzano, Gaiole and Castellina as the leading sites; these same villages still represent the nucleus of the Chianti Classico DOCG today. The best Sangiovese grapes are used to produce Chianti Classico Riserva, a particularly esteemed wine. Riserva wine has a deep ruby red color and requires a minimum maturation of 24 months including three months of bottle fining, as well as a minimum 12.5% alcohol level. Since 2011, the Marchesi Antinori has been made from grapes sourced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard (hence the addition of that name to its label). Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with considerable richness, this wine shows the darker, more voluptuous side of Chianti Classico. The Rennina is typically described as more feminine - it is soft, gracious and impeccably balanced, with aromas of sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. Over the years the continuing goal has been the search for land believed to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. There are now 48 hectares of vineyards (120 acres) divided amongst four distinct sites. Improved quality in the vineyards has led to more attention in the winery from vinification to the careful selection of casks for ageing but always with the maximum respect for tradition. The house style favors a lush expression of fruit with a softness that makes the wines very appealing upon release. Marchese Lodovico Antinori, creator of two of Italy s most famous wines, Ornellaia and Masseto, conceived of his new project with these benchmarks in mind. Consistently delicious, it has become deservedly recognized as one of the most important wines in the world. Ornellaia is typically a blend of between 50-60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20-25% Merlot and about 15% percent Cabernet Franc, with a dash of Petit Verdot. Ripeness and elegance are the two qualities that best describe the wine. Its aromas are generous and cleanly-defined, with rich, well-ripened fruit, complemented by chocolate and balsamic notes of aromatic herbs. On the palate it is silky-smooth with glossy tannins. The oak component is beautifully integrated, imparting notes of chocolate and tobacco that complete this beautiful portrait of Tuscan winemaking. Camarcanda is an exceptional wine with a level of aromatic intensity and integrity that is impossible to exaggerate. The wine is typically 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet- Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. This is the insider s Super-Tuscan. Guado al Tasso is probably the best, least well-known wine being produced in Bolgheri today, and thus is a bargain relative to its quality. Established in the 1750s by famed winemaker Pietro di Mastro Berardino it has now been under family control for 10 generations. The family is credited with locating, identifying and nurturing ancient vines that would have otherwise become extinct. There are now many fianos, but when Mastroberardino released its first commercial Radici bottling in 1984, it was startling for its purity and floral energy. This is one of the first vintages I ve tasted since then that shared the same energy, like a bee buzzing in the mouth. 74 ITALY - CAMPANIA (RED) ITALY - PUGLIA (WHITE & RED) TAURASI One of Southern Italy s oldest, most powerful and elegant red varietals, Aglianico needs time to be tamed, but becomes a must-drink wine when expressed in its full excellence by a master wine-maker like Mastroberardino. The best examples of this wine come from the volcanic soils of the town of Taurasi. Many vines in the area are hundreds of years old, for in the 1920s when vineyards throughout Europe were affected by phylloxera and many of the noblest areas of France were destroyed, Taurasi s volcanic soils prevented the disease from propagating and saved the vines. If you want fruit-forward, ripe, red wine for a good price, look no further than Puglia. Some of the best values in Italian wine come from this sunny, dry region. Most Puglia wine is red, full-bodied and will pair well with a wide variety of foods. Producers in Puglia have focused on making great red wines and local grapes like Negroamaro and Primitivo. Negroamaro has flavors of ripe plum, baked raspberries, and spice-cabinet notes like anise, allspice and cinnamon. Although full-bodied, it is not too tannic or acidic, and instead leads with bold fruit flavours. Primitivo (aka Zinfandel) is a richer, fuller-bodied red that tastes of dark fruit like fresh figs, blueberries and baked blackberries. At some point in history it migrated across the Adriatic Sea and was planted in Puglia, where it took root surprisingly well. Southern Italian immigrants, in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s, then brought their native grapes with them to California. The word Primitivo doesn t mean primitive in Italian, but actually means first-ripening since these grapes accumulate a lot of sugar early in the season. The early ripening results in wines that are big, luscious and full of fruit. Taurasi is a high quality wine and is a perfect pairing for game, red meat and mature cheese. It was born from a dream of competing with the world in the production of this noble and widespread grape variety and has now risen to near icon status. The vines of Ulmo which create it are unique in their location and terroir. Its fermentation and maturing in French barrels, which by now has been carefully planned for years, delivers an extraordinarily graceful yet powerful wine. In creating Cometa, Plenata sought to express the characteristics of Fiano - a grape indigenous to Campania - in an original and unique way. It has certainly done so: intense and flowery perfumes, a great structure but at the same time with minerals, Cometa is today one of the most unique and important white wines of southern Italy. 76 ITALY - SICILY (RED) ITALY - SICILY (RED) NERO D AVOLA Nero d Avola is the most important red grape of Sicily and one of Italy s most celebrated indigenous varietals. Its wines are dark in color, big in fruit flavors - especially ripe cherry, dark plum and raspberry - and well-suited for oak, which imparts smoke and spice elements. Santa Cecilia is the benchmark bottling of this grape, made from the best selection of old vine grapes on Planeta s Noto estate in the south-east corner of Sicily (not too far from Syracusa). Plumbago, by contrast, is a softer, lighter version of the grape that comes from the western part of the island and provides a lovely introduction to the varietal s fruit flavours. The Dorilli Classico Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a limited-production wine derived from a careful selection of vines and a blending of Nero d Avola with Frappato di Vittoria. This is a soft, balanced and fruit-forward wine. Below it on this list are several older bottlings from Planeta. This dry wine has immense elegance and depth of flavour. The wine stands out for its great aromatic intensity, particularly its varietal nuances of tropical fruits like pineapples and mangoes. Monopole is the oldest white wine brand of Spain. CVNE has produced this wine since It has become the benchmark of a classic, fresh white Rioja offering seductive aromas of spring, white flowers and fresh tropical fruit. Lead by the compelling wines of Vega-Sicilia (founded in 1864) the Ribera del Duero appellation has risen to rival Rioja as the premier wine region in Spain. Baron de Bornemisza Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos is a very special, rare wine. Its historic production makes for a wine that is rich and ripe, rather than sweet. Only three to four vintages are produced per decade, when climate conditions allow, and only about 2000 bottles per vintage. The grapes are grown in a single vineyard called Nyulászo-király in the Tokajihegyalja, Mád area of Hungary. Sauternes is where many of the world s finest sweet white wines are produced. It literally has an atmosphere all of its own, a specific mesoclimate of evening autumn mists which linger until well into the following day. The result is an ideal environment for the growth of the mould botrytis cinerea. This type of mould reduces the water content of the grapes and concentrates sugar and aromas. 83 PORT GRAPPA Founded in 1880, Ramos Pinto tends 187 hectares of prime vineyards in the Alto Corgo and Douro Superior areas of the famed Douro region. It owns most of its own vineyards, giving it a high degree of control over viticultural methods and harvest time. It s 20 Year Old Tawny is made from a selection of several plots from one of the oldest vineyards in the Douro region, the Quinta do Bom Retiro. Also worthy of considerable attention are the Vintage Ports, including the 1983! Grappa Tignanello is obtained by distilling the pomace of Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes harvested in the Tignanello vineyard, in the heart of Chianti Classico (the Gaja grappa uses the pomace of Nebbiolo grapes from its Sperss or Barolo vineyards). The fermented grapes are transferred to a distillery immediately after emptying the fermenting vats (racking) and then pressed. This procedure guarantees that distillation is carried out using only the best quality skins, rich in alcohol and especially in aromatic substances.
