1 page 1 memberservices@ Tobelos Crianza, Rioja 2008 Tobelos is produced by the recently established Bodegas y Vinedos, La Encina situated in Briñas. The name, La Encina (meaning The Oak Tree) was chosen because there is a 100-year-old oak tree on the land owned by the bodega. Separated from Haro by just a pathway, it is perched on a hill with magnificent views of the vineyards and the River Ebro and is the first bodega one comes across when entering the denominación of Rioja from the north. Situated in the heart of the Rioja Alta at Torremontalbo, the 70-hectare property is owned by the Amézola family. The new generation of the Amézola family, sisters Cristina and María, continue to make superb traditional-style crianza, harmonious and integrated, which will provide immediate drinking pleasure. 2 page 2 memberservices@ Producer : Amezola This 60-hectare property is situated in the heart of Rioja Alta at Torremontalbo where the vines enjoy very favourable conditions. The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range protects vineyards from the north winds, and the altitude here (600 to 750m above sea level) ensures the climate is cooler, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly. The claycalcareous soils perfectly suit the bodega s tempranillo, mazuelo and graciano grapes. Although the Amézola family has owned the land for many generations, the estate had fallen into disrepair until it was carefully replanted in the 1980s by two brothers, Iñigo and Javier Amézola de la Mora. With renewed attention given to the vines, it soon flourished. Tragically, having turned the fortunes around, Iñigo was killed in a road accident in His widow Cristina and his daughters María and Cristina Amézola have now taken over the running of the property, continuing to make excellent wines assisted by respected Bordeaux winemaker Georges Pauli, who acts as a consultant. Grapes are strictly sorted prior to fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, after which the wines undergo natural malolactic fermentation to soften their acidity. They are then aged in oak in the bodega s underground cellars, using a mixture of French and American barrels, which gives greater complexity. The bodega takes pride in the fact it ages its wines for markedly longer than the minimum number of months: for instance, the crianza spends a total of 16 months in barrel, before spending a further year in bottle. The Riojas produced here are classic, elegant examples of their type with fresh, yet dense and spicy fruit characters, and undertones of vanilla. The estate is especially unusual for Rioja in that it owns all of its vines.

3 page 3 memberservices@ Half bottle of Montefalco Sagrantino, Scacciadiavoli 2006 A powerful red with sensual, spicy, balsamic flavour and considerable grip. Sagrantino is the yardstick Umbrian red. It requires and repays ageing in barrel and bottle and is best drunk with flavoursome food. Product Code IT17342 Dominant Grape Sagrantino Product Type Red Wine Drink Dates 2013 to 2017 Origin Central Italy -Tuscany, Umbria Alcohol Level 15.0% Vintage 2006 Price No longer for sale Producer : Scacciadiavoli With a name that translates literally as cast out the devils, the Scacciadiavoli winery owes its eerie title to an exorcist who lived in the village by the vineyard during the 19th century. It was founded in 1884 by Prince Ugo Boncompagni- Ludovisi, who left Rome to dedicate himself to wine production, but since 1954 it has been owned by the Pambuffeti family. The estate is in the heart of Montefalco, an appellation located in the Perugia region of Umbria in central Italy. The 32 hectares of vines are now overseen by the fourth generation of the Pambuffeti family, and the area s typical clay soils are mixed with sand and schist, which are perfect for the indigenous sagrantino grape. As well as this variety, the family also grows sangiovese and merlot. The modern winery is arranged in four storeys, with the wine passing from the top to the bottom in the course of its production. After entering at the fourth level, wines are fermented in wooden or stainless-steel vats on the third storey, before being transferred down to the first and second levels for ageing. Montefalco Rosso ages for a year on the second level, whereas Montefalco Sagrantino and the sweet sagrantino spend two years in barriques on the first level, located underground. Montefalco Sagrantino is well judged, without the aggressive tannins of some examples, but always benefits from half a dozen or more years in bottle. Montefalco Rosso, a blend of 60% sangiovese, 15% sagrantino and 15% merlot, is attractive to drink younger but retains the individuality of the sagrantino grape.

4 page 4 memberservices@ The Society's Exhibition Chianti Classico 2010 A particularly fine vintage here for our chosen wine from the Poggiopiano estate. Owned by the Bartoli family since 1993, Poggiopiano is situated in the countryside overlooking San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence. Their vineyards get excellent exposure to the sun an advantage during the comparatively cooler 2010 grpowing season. Wine consultant Valentino Ciarla, who assists Stefano Bartoli, believes this is one of the estate's best vintages we agree! Plenty of ripe cherry fruit to complement the typically lively acidity, and the result is a fragrant, full and perfectly balanced example of Chianti Classico. A great success. Product Code IT16491 Dominant Grape Sangiovese Product Type Red Wine Drink Dates 2013 to 2017 Origin Central Italy -Tuscany, Umbria Alcohol Level 14.0% Vintage 2010 Price No longer for sale Producer : Poggiopiano Situated in the hamlet of Pisignano overlooking San Casciano in north-west Chianti Classico region (close to Antinori), Poggiopiano has been owned by the Bartoli family since The family now has 20 hectares of vines, which lie 300 metres above sea level on a flat-topped hill in the Florentine Valley. The limestone and marl soils here are perfectly suited to the sangiovese grape. Father Beppe, now in his eighties, is assisted by his sons: Stefano, who oversees the winemaking with the assistance of an oenologist, and Alessandro, who manages the estate and controls sales. The winery is a restored nineteenth-century cantina, and contains both cutting-edge equipment and old cement vats that still produce excellent results. The family produces five wines, including a single-vineyard Chianti La Tradizione, designed for longer ageing than the Society s Exhibition Chianti, and a sought-after wine called Rosso Di Sera, which is made with sangiovese and colorino, and which is declared as a Vino da Tavolo. The company also produces grappa and olive oil. Winemakers Attilio Pagli and Valentino Ciarla make wines that reflect their origin but which are full of ripe, approachable fruit. This made them the ideal choice for The Society's Exhibition Chianti Classico.

This is hardly surprising when one considers that some of the world's greatest eating houses can be found between Lyon and Valence. So for Francois Villard's professional life began at the age of 20 as a waiter and wine-waiter when the wine bug really hit home. He bought vines in Condrieu and set up cellars behind those of his friend Yves cuilleron. He then built offices and cellar space on the plateau, above the vines of Condrieu. His idea of wine making is like cooking, forever searching, for ever questioning and trying new things out. It took him a while to get the hang of making red wine. There was a time when the wines were too inky. Not so today when on the contrary they surprise by their delicacy as well as by their depth and power. Like many of his colleagues, Villard has his fingers in lots of different pies, including the one of reconstructing the Roman vineyards that existed around the town of Vienne and that became abandoned at the time of phylloxera and the Great War. The vines all tend to have cuvée names and are not necessarily linked to any one vineyard. Reflets for example is a blend of old vines selected from top sites and aged extensively in barrel.

This is a syrah from both younger vines in Cornas and from vines outside the appellation. Dark, characterful and deliciously fruity. 8 page 8 memberservices@ Producer : Podere 414 Simone Castelli, the son of famous consultant oenologist Maurizio Castelli, runs this smallholding in Scansano, southwest Tuscany, close to the Mediterranean coast. He inherited 2.5 hectares in an agricultural plot called Podere 414 ( Farm 414 ), and clearly decided that this would be as good a name as any. The Castelli vineyards lie in the scenic coastal area known as the Maremma, historically an area of marsh land until it was drained in the 1930s and turned over to viticulture, with remarkable success - nearby are the Supertuscan estates of Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Simone s wife Mara is an agronomist and shares his firm belief in environmentally friendly cultivation absolutely no herbicides or chemical fertilisers are tolerated here. Morellino di Scansano, is made from a blend of 85% morellino (a clone of sangiovese) and up to six other grapes is a delight. This young and exciting estate is one to watch.
