2 page 2 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection for The Wine Society, 2009 Once again, Society buyer Toby Morrhall was allowed to select a vat of cedary cabernet sauvignon from Catena's superb high-altitude 1,450m Adrianna vineyard, to which a little cabernet franc and malbec were added for extra complexity. Aged for 16 months in French oak coopered by Taransaud, 50% of which was new. The resultant wine was voted a 2013 Wine Champion at our annual blind-tasting competition to find the best of The Society's range for drinking now. 3 page 3 Producer : Clos Culombu (Etienne Suzzoni) The Balagne, a fruitful stretch of the north-west coast, known as the Garden of Corsica, is home to one of the island s oldest, driest and most serious appellations, Vin de Corse-Calvi. Vines have been grown here since the 13th century, and though current acreage is now less than half of its original 700 hectares, its reputation is high. Rosé and red wines form the lion s share of production, with whites accounting for a meagre 12%. Etienne Suzzoni at Clos Culombu, in the communes of Montegrosso and Lumio, is one of the real characters among Corsica's winemakers. Larger than life in every way, he has championed the cause of fine wine from Corsica, where till now so much of the wine has been produced by under-performing co-operatives. From his 55 hectares he makes fine examples of that Corsican staple, rosé, excellent reds from nielluccio (aka sangiovese in Italy) and sciacarello (a native grape) supported by syrah, grenache and cinsault, and full-flavoured whites from vermentino, which dominates among the island s white varieties. However, before vermentino came to dominate in Corsica, there were other varieties planted and these are slowly being reintroduced, especially by some of the more forward-thinking growers like Etienne. Anyone for riminese, genovese, brustianu, cordivarta, biancu gentile, or cualtacciu? They all find their way into bottles from this estate with one eye on the traditional and one on the innovative.

Burge was no novice, having been an experienced industry veteran with other companies before taking on his own venture, and was also the fifth generation of a winemaking family that had originally emigrated to Australia from Wiltshire in Since the mid-2000s, he and his wife Helen have also welcomed their three children the sixth generation to the team. Burge now has extensive holdings in the rich, red-brown soils of the Barossa valley including some of the finest and oldest shiraz vineyards as well as other sites further afield. From these plots come a number of single vineyard wines, as well as the fruit for his whole range of cuvées, which are predominantly red. His most renowned wine, and one of Barossa s most powerful and long-lived, is Meshach Shiraz, named after Grant s great-great-grandfather and produced from 70-year old vines. Benchmark is a delicious entry-level shiraz made to enjoy when young and vibrant. The Filsell Old Vine Shiraz, from the eponymous vineyard, is an award-winning wine of marvellous concentration from very old vines.
