3 Media brand / readers profile WEINWISSER has been one of the most important and most cited sources for wine ratings and shopping advice for quality wines for over 25 years. Every month, the team of WEINWISSER writers and editors, which comprises some of the foremost German-speaking wine experts, provides the magazine s readership with excellent coverage of wine-growing regions and new wines. The target group consists of quality-oriented, high-income and demanding wine lovers, who according to our survey about a high budget for private wine purchases have around half there more than 7, per year for wine purchases. 8 Authors Giuseppe Lauria, Sebastian Bordthäuser born in 1968, is a jurist, an independent communications consultant, media coach, trainer (FH), Wine journalist and Editor-in-Chief of WEINWISSER since 1 st April As a professional wine taster, he has been responsible for the Rheingau team of the Gault & Millau wine guide since He has been published for over a decade, in his capacity as a connoisseur of the German and international wine scene, in numerous leading international wine magazines, focusing on Germany, Italy, Australia and Bordeaux. As a jury member of various competitions, Lauria has judged wines in blind tastings and has regularly moderated challenging wine tastings and events. In wine-tasting, he combines technical expertise with his unique perspective as a communications and media consultant for the economic and financial world. In 2007, Giuseppe Lauria won a renowned international journalist prize with his article on the renaissance of wine-growing on the Mount Etna volcano. Sebastian Bordthäuser studied German, ultimately decided but then for the bottle. The study, says the sought-after sommelier, he now daily benefits from his efforts in a generally understandable way. To talk and write language about wine Falstaff named him sommelier of the year, Bertelsmann Verlag elected him If there is no wine in the area, he also likes to recess into topics like sake beer, sodas or cocktails. 9 Authors André Dominé Michael Quentel In spite of his name, André Dominé is actually a native of Hamburg. At the age of 14, he was already working for newspapers, but his first love was literature. The big change came when he moved to Winzerdorf in Roussillon in 1981 and acquired a vineyard. He was the first German journalist to report on the wine regions of southern and South-West France and started working for many German wine and gourmet magazines. «Wine», just one of his 16 books, has become the world s most comprehensive encyclo paedia of wine and an international standard work. This also applies to his publication «The World of Spirits and Cocktails». was born in the challenging vintage year of Residing in Hamburg, during his student days he kept himself intensely busy studying the subject of wine. Thanks to the enthusiasm of a friendly wine merchant, he graduated with a Masters in Business Administration alongside frequent practical semesters, thanks to a more-or-less «parallel study» of all things wine in the backrooms of numerous Bayreuth beer pubs. Since then, incurably infected with the wine virus, Michael Quentel actively seeks personal contact with winemakers from around the world and regularly participates in various tasting panels. Michael Quantel has been an active wine blogger since 2005, and a regular contributor to WEINWISSER since His vinophile curiosity knows no borders. As a wine collector, he focuses upon mature gems, Rieslings and the fine wines of the Rhône and Piedmont. Full-time this wine connoisseur is involved in the management of real estate and in his capacity as a financial service consultant. 9

10 Authors Frank Kämmer MS Axel Probst Frank Kämmer worked for many years as a wine steward in a number of top restaurants and was, during this time, counted among the leading European sommeliers. In 1996, he passed the exam to become a Master Sommelier - the highest international qualification in the profession. He has published numerous books on the subject of wine and spirits and is a regular contributor for various international specialist publications. Kämmer is, among other titles, Formateur Officiel des Vins de Bourgogne, Formador Homologado del Vino de Jerez and winner of the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Weinkultur Prize. He is also the first German to be accepted into the British Circle of Wine Writers. was born in 1970, co-incidentally one of the greatest vintage years for Port in the 20th century. During his Airforce training in England (Vintage Port) and France (Tawnies), he became personally acquainted with port because the Officer s Mess would traditionally always have a bottle of high-quality Port on hand. Probst is a member of the Port Brotherhood Confraria do Vinho do Porto and gives all the important presentations on Port in Germany. 10

11 Authors Alexander Magrutsch Markus Budai Alexander Magrutsch has been editor-in-chief of the Austrian magazine wein. pur owned by the Argrarverlag (Argrar publishing group) since With a distribution of around 29,500 copies in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, wein.pur works in partnership with WEINWISSER. Before he began working for wein.pur, Magrutsch was a wine journalist for the Austrian magazine, Vinaria between 1992 and During this time, he gained many years of experience in viticulture and became a self-employed Managing Director in the gastronomy sector. Magrutsch travels regularly to Piedmont and has done so for the last 20 years. He also takes part in the vintage presentations in Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. In 2016, he was accepted to the exclusive Ordine dei Cavalieri Del Tartufo and the Vini d Alba for his services with regard to the wines of Alba. Besides Austrian wine and the wines of Piedmont, his specialities are wines from the Central Tuscany region such as Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino, as well as the sparkling wines of the Trentodoc region in Northern Italy. Between 2013 and 2015, he was a member of the jury for the national qualifying round of the European Champagne Ambassador of the Comité Champagne. Although he is the youngest of our writers, Markus is already an «old hand» when it comes to wine. Markus Budai was born in 1991, studied wine management in heilbronn and has been writing the successful food and wine blog «Budi s Foodblog» for several years now. 11

12 Authors Sigi Hiss Michael Schmidt is German, but has been living in Switzerland for many years. His preference for exclusive wines brought him into early contact with corresponding wineries, many of whom he now acts for in an advisory capacity. As a wine journalist, Sigi Hiss places the greatest value on absolute independence and integrity. For WEINWISSER he writes, amongst other things, about winemaking techniques and sensory. In 1980 Michael Schmidt was the first German gaining the WSET diploma in London. In the following years he was successful as a wine journalist in UK, especially for the Sunday Telegraph, Good Wine Guide, Sotheby s Wine Encyclopedia and Wine Report. From 1988 to 2008 he worked in primarily as head of wine seminars, from 1998 with own wine school in Surrey. Since 2008 Michael Schmidt is Germany s editor of the well-known Purple Pages by Jancis Robinson. For the 2013 re-edition of the classic World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson he drafted as a consultant responsible for the wine chapter Germany. In addition, Michael Schmidt u.a. as a translator for the book series World s Best Viticulture, published by Tre Torri Publishing House. 12

13 Authors Jürgen Mathäß, Thomas Boxberger-von Schaabner born in the Palatinate area of Germany, holds a degree in economics and initially worked in the industry. Later he specialised as a journalist, writing on economics. For over 30 years, he has been writing almost solely on wine and the development of the wine market, and was editor-in-chief of the magazines «Weinfreund», «Weinwirtschaft» and the German edition of «Vinum». Mathäß is one of the top experts on the wine scene in the Palatinate, Spain and South America. He has published several books on wine and writes regularly in specialist magazines and daily newspapers. His crime thrillers featuring Inspector Badenhop are published by Emons. Thomas Boxberger-von Schaabner was born in 1966 in Mannheim. Although he wanted to study mathematics, in 1985 he contracted wine fever, so he instead began a training as a cook in a starred top restaurant before working as a wine merchant at the extraprima import business inmannheim. Since 1992, Boxberger has traveled extensively, year after year, to the wine regions of Tuscany,Piedmont, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Through his many personal contacts, and ability to converse in the national languages, he has accomplished a great reputation as tasting wine specialist. Since 2011, Thomas Boxberger has regularly been writing wine for WEINWIS- SER from Tuscany and Piedmont. Stylistically, Boxberger attaches great importance to authenticity, finesse and character of the wines. A quality picture based solely on intensity, abundance and extraction is, in his mind, not enough to give a high score to award to a wine. 13
