1 VINE TRAIL NEWS NOVEMBER/DECEMBER IN THE NORTHERN RHÔNE As regards red wines, everything depended when the growers picked the grapes in 2014 pick before the rains on September 20 th and you could produce great wines. Guillaume Gilles believes that his 2014 Cornas from Chaillots is the best wine he has ever produced, and he doesn t know if he could do any better. Pick after the rains and the fruit deteriorated as rot spread and the wines lost concentration and alcohol. Yields were low again, around 25hl/ha across the region. Overall it is a vintage with forward fruit, mid-weight, very like 2012 in overall profile according to most growers, like 2006 as per Fabrice Gripa. An outstanding vintage for all the white wines. As in 2013 the whites have a lovely focus and freshness, are once again not high in alcohol, although there was no need to chaptalize. These are really winning wines that will give pleasure early. The 2014 Condrieus in particular will be high class. BURGUNDY 2013 Short harvests and the increasing global interest in the market (and willingness to pay top whack), see the continuing trend of prices getting higher. We ve offset these to an extent with the better exchange rate, and by releasing our offer in November we are certainly pricing more keenly than those who released their offers last January is a fine vintage for red and white Burgundies (here demand is so strong we have no wines to offer) and we have recently produced an offer of outstanding, limited quantity wines from Cécile Tremblay and Amiot-Servelle. 2 New Wines The following additional new wines are now available: Cheverny AC 2014 Tradition - Domaine de Montcy A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, organically certified, made with natural yeasts and minimal sulphur by Laura Semeria. A lovely aromatic wine, all the focus of the Loire Sauvignon, rounded out in the mouth with the Chardonnay. Coteaux Champenois AC 2013 Ormes Rouge Bérèche & Fils From 0.38 ares planted with 50 year old vines, this blend of 75% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier is aged 16 months in oak. Ripe, packed with red fruits, this is sophisticated, elegant and delicious. Marguet Père & Fils Amboniacus 2009 Grand Cru Extra Brut Benôit Marguet is one of the most exciting young grower/négociant producers in Champagne. Based in the grand cru of Ambonnay he farms biodynamically and makes impressive, complex champagnes. This wine is a 50/50 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend and has a purity of fruit and distinct saline chalky note. The palate is both sharp and has volume, is full with great acidity, makes you salivate and leaves a salty tasty on your lips. This is a fresh vintage with lots of acidity; it is a sharp wine that will age forever. The wine is very young, but already complex and with great depth. This is dead gorgeous clearly the wine of the vintage, a wine that should improve with time in bottle, but is so moreish it's almost impossible to resist today. At this price, it has to be among the cheapest great wines in the world. The stuff dreams are made of... 98pts, max 2bts Robert Parker s Wine Advocate October 2015, Stephan Reinhardt on Champagne Champagne Grand Cru 2008 Avizoise Agrapart From 50+ year old Chardonnay vines in the best part of the coteaux d'avize, the 2008 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru l'avizoise offers an absolutely clear, fresh, discreetly aromatic and elegant bouquet of ripe apples, ultra ripe pears, dates, limes, chalk dust, iodine and some hints of licorice. Grown on calcareous argil, fermented in demi-muids (malolactic included) and bottled unfiltered in May 2009, the wine was kept on the lees for more than five years and disgorged manually with a dosage of five grams per liter. It comes along as full-bodied yet pure, very fine and persistent Champagne with good concentration; it has a firm mineral structure and an almost Burgundian character. The length is really terrific.
