2 WELCOME We understand the importance of providing a marketing vehicle to wineries throughout the country, especially in these difficult financial times. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) is specifically designed to provide an even playing field. The SFCWC s most important attribute and distinction from other competitions is that every winery has the opportunity to enter and to win. A gold medal winner from a winery within a certain price point signifies they are within the top ten percent of quality wines in the country. We are proud to acknowledge the wineries whose passion and ingenuity are continually reshaping the wine industry. Wine makers and owners alike bring their innovative-thinking and vision to enhance enology and viticulture. Just as they seek to raise the quality of wines, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, which is the largest competition of American wines in the world, also aspires to provide a platform that allows wineries to present their new wine vintages to the consuming public. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC) is taking this opportunity to issue a Call for Entries for its 2014 competition. The SFCWC utilizes a unique collaborative style of judging as it evaluates thousands of entries from around the country by judges from across the United States. In cooperation with Northern California s largest newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, the SFCWC will provide heightened exposure to the award winning wineries in In February, the San Francisco Chronicle will publish a special section and post online the award winning wines for more than 1.7 million readers. The Chronicle s online site, SFGATE.com, will also partner with the competition and provide major publicity of the award winning wines. The nationally recognized Wine & Spirits Magazine is returning as a major sponsor and will publish a full page spread of award winning wines. This year s publicity will include coverage in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and all other local and trade media throughout the country, as well as sponsorships from KGO-AM 810 and NBC-TV. The Larose Group, our public relations group, will increase wine award exposure through print, radio, websites, blogs and other social networking sites throughout the country. After the judging is complete, we bring our judges knowledge and the opportunity to taste these delicious wines to consumers at the Public Tasting and Pairing at Fort Mason Center, Saturday, February 15, We believe that this competition is a true barometer that consumers can use to educate themselves and measure premium wines. Thank you for your participation and good luck. 3 SPECIAL BENEFITS FOR PARTICIPATING WINERIES THE LARGEST COMPETITION OF AMERICAN WINES IN THE WORLD OVERCOMES THE FISCAL CLIFF... The Fiscal Cliff struck the hearts, minds and purses of vintners and consumers alike. How could wine makers create affordable wines that appeal to consumers? How could consumers find satisfying wines that appeal to their senses but remain affordable? Wilfred Wong The 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition has solved this dilemma. The first competition of the year, this unique competition is designed to bring together the most distinguished judges in the country to compare wines in multiple price ranges and varieties to determine the best of the best in each category that appeal to a college student to a sommelier. The largest competition of American wines in the world has created a win-win situation for every palate. An elite group of individuals from media, trade, educators, restaurant Jon Bonne and hospitality industries (including wine buyers and winemakers), from New York to California and everywhere in between come together for an intensive week-long judging session. When the judging is over, wine drinkers know what they like and vintners know their efforts have not gone unrewarded. Wilfred Wong, wine buyer, Beverages & More! says, This is the first competition of the year and the most important in the judging calendar. High Andy Perdue awards in this competition can result in a major jump in sales. For over 22 years, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC), formerly the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, has grown and redefined itself in response to the needs of wineries and consumers. Each year a carefully selected group of influential judges gather together in small groups to taste and evaluate the top wines in the country. Last year the Jessica Altieri judges scrutinized over 5,500 wines from budget to exclusive categories. WINNING WINERIES RECEIVE CONTINUED MEDIA AND SOCIAL NETWORKING EXPOSURE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR The winning wines and wineries are featured in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Wine Awards Special Section, and online at SFGate.com Jim Trezise in February with a readership of more than 1.7 million. In addition, the wineries are also featured in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and in other papers across the country. Throughout 2013 and 2014 the SFCWC will continue to feature all medal-winning wines at sfgate. com, winejudging.com, and other wine related media outlets in addition to numerous press releases which are distributed throughout the country on the awardwinning wines and wine makers. All information is sent nationally to newspapers, magazines, television, radio Winnie Alberg stations, and wine associations, as well as Facebook postings, twitter feeds, blogs and other social networking outlets. The media exposure caused JON BONNE, WINE EDITOR, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE TO SAY A gold medal or higher at this competition is a home run for a winery. All gold and silver medal winners will receive plaques for prominent display at the tasting and will enable wineries to have selected wines stand out at other events. PUBLIC TASTING IN SAN FRANCISCO SALUTES THE ESSENCE OF THE BAY San Francisco is one of America s favorite places to live, work and play. It is home to some of the most exceptional food and wine in the country. The SFCWC urges Americans to join them in raising a glass of cheer in recognition of the Bay Area s beauty and essence of elegance at the annual Public Tasting held at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco with stunning views of the Bay on Saturday, February 15th from 1:30-5 p.m. Judging here is a professional highlight. and, winning gold here can really make a winery s reputation. said Andy Perdue, editor and publisher, Great Northwest Wines and wine columnist for the Seattle Times. COLLEGE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT WINE THROUGH NON PROFIT ASSISTANCE The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is an annual fundraiser that supports wine studies, enology, and viticulture programs for higher education institutions in California. Left over wines from the competition is donated annually to Santa Rosa Junior College, Fresno State University, Sonoma State University, and California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. Completely seamless backroom, said professional wine judge, Vineyard and Winery Consultant Winnie Alberg with a smile. It s been a great experience. KGO 810 IS A PROUD SPONSOR OF THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE WINE COMPETITION PUBLIC TASTING Each year, the Bay Area s News & Information Station, KGO 810 features judges and winning wineries as a sponsor of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition to over half a million listeners reaching from Oregon to Southern California. Celebrity broadcasters are in attendance at the event and KGO listeners receive a recap of the big winners of the competition and its judges. Stay tuned throughout January and February on Cooking with Ryan Scott, Saturdays from 4-6pm, to learn more about the winning wines, as well as tips and trends from the judges. Don t miss the Public Tasting Saturday, February 15, 2014, starting 1/2 hour earlier this year at 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. THE SWEET SIGN OF SUCCESS, A SFCWC DOUBLE GOLD PLAQUE Committed to empowering and recognizing outstanding work from wineries across the nation, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition provides large size plaques to all winners awarded the distinction of silver or higher. This commemorate plaque is designed to be displayed in tasting rooms, restaurants or offices and it s another way to showcase your passion. Plaque, Jim Sullivan, Castello Di Amoroso
