Wineries For every winery we accept into our portfolio, we turn down another five. It s not enough that our wineries make compelling wines; they must also make wines that sell. Big Bang Wine is proud to represent the following wineries: Cambiata Clos de la Tech Coquerel Longoria McIntyre Rail 2 Rail

Wines Albariño Tannat Dornfelder Chardonnay Pinot Noir

Key Facts Owner/Operator Eric Laumann Year Founded 2002 Annual Production 2,000 cases Highlights Long-term contracts with exceptional vineyards in Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco Hand-made, extremely limited wines Master winemaker who knows his way around Monterey County Affordable, approachable Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from premier vineyards in top AVAs High scores and dozens of Gold Medals from top competitions

Independent, Iconoclastic and Different Cambiata is one of most independent-minded and iconoclastic wineries in California. Located in the cool part of Monterey County, this small, hands-on vigneron produces stunning wines from some of the rarest and leastknown varieties in the Golden State including Albarino, Tannat and Dornfelder. Cambiata also makes tightlyfocused, well-structured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs. Owner/operator Eric Laumann, one of California s top winemakers for more than 25 years, launched Cambiata in Today, it is one of the most sought-after brands by savvy consumers, high-profile restaurants and independent retailers. Rare Grapes That Never Cease to Amaze Who makes the best Albariño in California? Cambiata. And who makes the best Tannat in the Golden State? That would be Cambiata. Final question -- who makes the best Dornfelder in not just California but maybe the world? You guessed it, Cambiata. And why should you care? Because there is a growing number of trade, media and consumer aficionados looking for wines that are new and exciting. What s in a Name? In the world of music, Cambiata means more than the literal translation of exchange or changed note. It is the added tonal dimension that occurs when two chords momentarily share properties, so that the transition has greater depth and mellifluence. It was a radical idea back in the 16thcentury and was almost outlawed. What do the Wines Taste Like? The Chardonnay is rich, creamy and structured. The Pinot Noir is deep, spicy, aromatic and balanced. The Albariño is crisp, fruity and exotic. It s like a cross between Riesling and Viognier. The Tannat is dense, powerful, thick and brooding. Serious stuff. The Dornfelder is lush, fruity and dense. Think Zinfandel meets Malbec.

Cambiata 2012 Albariño (Monterey) Score: 90 Points Strikingly vibrant and distinctive, with ripe juicy pear, marmalade and citrus notes, accented by citrus blossom hints. This ends with a clean, snappy finish. Drink now. 390 cases made. JL Eric Laumann Cambiata 2012 Albariño (Monterey) Score: 90 Points Bone dry and tart, this is made without oak, allowing the grape s natural acidity and flavors to star. There s a minerality to the lemons and limes, with hints of vanilla and white pepper. What a glorious partner for oysters on the half shell. S.H. (6/1/2014)

Santa Cruz Mountains, California First Vintage 1996 Annual Production 2,000 cases Key Facts Highlights Clos de la Tech produces five Pinot Noirs from three estate vineyards: o Domaine du Docteur Rodgers - 1 acre, hand-farmed site in Woodside o Domaine Valeta acres, 2,350 feet above sea level in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA o Domaine Lois Louise - an extraordinarily steep, ocean-exposed, 163-acre property in the SCM AVA Extreme terrain (high elevation, steep, exposed, austere soils) Incredibly low yields (less than one ton per acre) Vine-by-vine farming High-density planting (4,150 vines per acre) Careful matching of rootstock, clones and trellising to terroir Innovative equipment designed by owner TJ Rodgers Three gravity-flow, step-down caves Hand harvest Foot crushed grapes Whole cluster fermentations One-of-a-kind, TJ Rodgers designed tractor (to navigate steep hills) One-of-a-kind, TJ Rodgers designed press (to maximize flavor extraction and reduce bitterness) 100% Francois Freres Oak Bottled unfiltered

Santa Cruz Mountains, California Uncompromised Pinot Noir With caves tunneling deep into a vine-covered ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains and vineyards so steep they have to be farmed with a one-of-akind, specially designed tractor moved by cables, Clos de la Tech is one of the most ambitious and innovative Pinot Noir producers in California. The winery was founded in 1994 and continues to be operated by TJ Rodgers, CEO of Cypress Semiconductor, and his wife, Valeta. Some of the highlights at Clos de la Tech include extreme growing conditions, high-altitude terrain, vine-by-vine farming, high-density planting (4,150 vines per acre), low yields (below one ton per acre), innovative equipment, gravity-flow winery, whole cluster fermentations and no filtration. Hands-On, Innovative Owners T.J. Rodgers is the owner and winemaker for Clos de la Tech. He is also the founder, president, CEO, and a director of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. TJ has been making wine since 1996 and has developed and implemented a number of innovative techniques, technologies and pieces of equipment to ensure that CDLT s wines reflect the terroir from which they came. T.J. s wife, Valeta Massey, an ex-senior SRAM design engineer at Cypress, is in charge of winery and vineyard operations. Cold-Climate, Mountain Vineyards Clos de la Tech s five Pinot Noirs come from three estate vineyards: Domaine du Docteur Rodgers (1 acre, hand-farmed site in Woodside), Domaine Valeta (3.5 acres, 2,350 feet above sea level in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA) and Domaine Lois Louise (an extraordinarily steep, ocean-exposed, 163-acre property in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA). Some of the highlights at Clos de la Tech include extreme growing conditions, high-altitude terrain, vine-by-vine farming, high-density planting (4,150 vines per acre), low yields (below one ton per acre), innovative equipment (designed by TJ to produce hand-made wines by gravity flow; no pumping), whole cluster fermentations and no filtration. Quote Our winemaking method is a faithful replication of that of Ouvrard, the winemaker who brought prominence to Romanee-Conti in the 1830s truly méthode ancienne, including hand picking, foot crushing, native yeast fermentation and no filtering. The theory is to bring our fruit, which is special, to the bottle without manipulation. With these methods, one can easily taste the difference between the vineyards that is their expression of terrior. TJ Rodgers

Year Founded 2005 (First Vintage 2006) Annual Production 2,000 cases Key Facts Highlights Estate vineyard in Calistoga Farming for lower yields and higher quality Intense canopy management program Hand harvesting Small lot fermentations No ML for white wines Extended lees contact for white wines Moderate percentage of new French oak Lower alcohols, lower ph, higher acidities for better balance and age-worthiness Minimal fining and filtration Estate Walnut Wash Vineyard Location Acreage Terrain Soils Climate Varieties Calistoga, Napa Valley, CA 7 acres planted to vines Gentle slope below Mayacamas Mountain Range Mix of deep clay and stones Relatively warm and protected Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah

A Different View of Napa Valley Coquerel Family Wine Estates is located just beyond the town of Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley. The heart and soul of the winery is the estate Walnut Wash vineyard, a gorgeous, oak-studded property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Since 2005, the winery has done extensive enhancement and replanting of the site to ensure world-class fruit from vintage to vintage. The combination of warm temperatures and deep, clay/stone soils makes this ideal terroir for Sauvignon Blanc, the flagship variety. It also produces exceptional Verdelho, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. In addition to our estate fruit, Coquerel sources Chardonnay, Cabernet and other noble grapes from a handful of premier growers throughout the Napa Valley. Passionate Owners In 2005, Clay and Brenda Cockerel purchased a vineyard in Calistoga planted to old-vine, dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc. In 2008 they acquired the adjacent site that was planted to a handful of traditional varieties rarely found in modern-day Napa. Since then the Cockerells and their team have revamped, replanted and upgraded their property to luxury-class winegrowing standards. Each vintage, the winery produces small batches of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Christine Barbe World Famous for Sauvignon Blanc Winemaker Christine Barbe is a master of Sauvignon Blanc. Born and raised in Bordeaux, she studied biochemistry and received her doctorate in Enology and Viticulture from the Bordeaux Institute of Enology. While in France, Christine worked with the renowned Denis Dubourdieu and made Sauvignon Blanc at Chateau Carbonnieux and La Louviere in Pessac-Leognan. In 1996 she moved to California and worked for a number of important producers including Robert Mondavi, Gallo and Trinchero. In addition to her duties at Coquerel, Christine also makes wine under her own Toquade label. Superb Vineyards & Winemaking In 2014 Coquerel Christine will oversee the planting of four acres of Cabernet Sauvignon at Coquerel s new site in Calistoga. A careful matching of rootstocks, clones, spacing and trellising to the soils will ensure extremely high quality fruit from vintage to vintage. On the winemaking front, Christine has had a dramatic impact on the quality and style of Coquerel s wines. Everything is handmade in small lots to ensure character and authenticity. The whites are bright, crisp, elegant and well structured while the reds are intense, aromatic, harmonious and lush.

Dan Berger s Vintage Experience Volume XVII, Issue 45 January 16, 2014 I love them. They all have is a startling subtlety, a trait rarely seen in California. As such they are perfect illustrations of how a great French wine maker can bring forth the soul of Gaul from California soil. By harvesting early enough and taking ultimate care to craft wines of sheer delicacy, Barbe has made some the most sublime and exciting wines I have tasted from a warmer climate in decades. Each wine in the line exemplifies structural integrity, and as such all the wines are meant to gain a lot through bottle age. I sampled the 2011, which drank like a white Bordeaux, with concentrated aromas of limestone and passion fruit and incredible texture and body. By contrast, the 2012 Le Petit Coquerel Sauvignon Blanc ($20) had that pure, crisp expression of grapefruit, but with a round midpalate and long sophisticated finish typical of Sancerre. 15 Rick Longoria Wines Pinot Grigio, Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, Cuvee Diana, Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir, Lovely Rita, Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir, Fe Ciega, Santa Rita Hills

First Vintage 1982 Annual Production 3,000 cases Key Facts Highlights Longoria s wines are prized for their balance and structure. They are firm, concentrated, rich, balanced, and more structured than many of their peers. (Lower alcohol, higher acid, lower ph.) Rick Longoria is one of the pioneers of the Santa Barbara County wine industry, first arriving to the area in Rick and Diana Longoria established Longoria Wines in 1982 to focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. Longoria was first winery established in the city of Lompoc. Today the Lompoc Wine Ghetto boasts dozens of high-quality producers. Thirty-two years after it s founding, the annual wine production at Longoria Wines remains at roughly 3,000 cases, the mark of a true artisanal winery. Rick was an early advocate of grapes grown in what is now the Sta. Rita Hills appellation and was instrumental in the establishment of the AVA. In 1998 Rick planted his estate vineyard, Fe Ciega, to three clones of Pinot Noir on a south-facing slope in the western most part of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The clay loam soil with Monterey shale formations produces a wine of tremendous power and intensity. As the winemaker for The Gainey Vineyard, Rick s 1987 Santa Ynez Valley Chardonnay scored 98 points in the Wine Spectator s Burgundy vs. California blind tasting. It was rated the number one wine by James Laube. Despite the small production, Rick produces a wide array of varieties and blends, all of which have earned praise from critics and consumer alike.

Making History in Santa Barbara County Longoria was launched in 1982 in Santa Barbara County by Rick and Diana Longoria. The goal from the start was to produce small lots of high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two varieties that would eventually become the signature grapes for this cool, coastal region. His first release was 500 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley. In December 1998, Rick moved the winery into a 5,400 sq. foot industrial building in what is now affectionately called the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. His was the first winery to be established in Lompoc. Rick says: "From the very beginning of my career I felt that the Santa Barbara wine region had the potential to produce world-class wines. It has been gratifying to see that belief realized over the last 30 years. It has also been very rewarding to have some of my wines contribute to the great reputation of our wine region." Longoria wines are handcrafted in very small quantities ranging from 50 to 700 cases. Total annual production currently averages 3,000 cases. The Longoria Style Rick Longoria produces wines that express pure varietal and vineyard character. His bottlings are balanced, elegant, rich, silky and age-worthy. They offer great concentration, intense flavors, expressive aromatics, firm acids, low phs and relatively low alcohol levels. They are often described as possessing both European and California sensibilities. Rick s wines are influenced by his view point that wine is a natural food. As he states, The ultimate enjoyment of wine is as an accompaniment to a meal, whether it be simple or sublime. While Longoria wines are enjoyable by themselves, it is with food that they really shine and reveal all of their nuances and textures.

McIntyre - One of California s Great Producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Since releasing their first wines in 2005, McIntyre has become one of the most acclaimed producers of Chardonnay and Pinot from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Their wines are intense, balanced, pure, accurate and substantial. They are prized by the trade, consumers and the media for their character, drinkability and deliciousness. McIntyre Estate Vineyard The Sweet Spot of the Santa Lucia Highlands The McIntyre Estate Vineyard lies in the sweet spot of Monterey County s Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, a 12-mile stretch of east-facing benchland renowned for producing wines with great character and complexity. Originally planted in 1973, the 80-acre site boasts some of the Highlands oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. Since purchasing the property in 1987, the McIntyre family has viticulturally upgraded the entire site. McIntyre Vineyards was among the first properties in the Santa Lucia Highlands to be SIP (Sustainability In Practice) Certified. Santa Lucia Highlands A Remarkable Cool-Climate Region In a relatively short span of time the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA has achieved superstar status. The region boasts 6,000 acres of vines - primarily Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah - planted on terraces below the Santa Lucia mountain range. The cool, Region I climate is shaped by the morning fog and strong winds funneled daily down the Salinas Valley from Monterey Bay to the northwest. The region enjoys one of the longest and coolest growing seasons in California. Steve McIntyre Winegrower, Winemaker, Nice Guy Having planted more than 20% of the entire AVA, farmed nearly a third of its vineyards and vinified hundreds of wines from its grapes, Steve McIntyre understands what makes the Santa Lucia Highlands so unique. With degrees in viticulture and enology and a history in SLH that stretches nearly four decades, Steve has a unique perspective on the terroir and wines of this great appellation. Outside of McIntyre Vineyards, Steve was a founding member of Monterey Wine Company and for the past three decades, he and his wife, Kim, have owned and operated Monterey Pacific. 24 Eric Laumann on Wine and Surfing Winemakers want to make wines for their friends and I found at post-surf barbeques and get-togethers that surfers gravitate towards Zinfandel. What attracts the watermen (and waterwomen) could be the forward fruit and spice and an appreciated hit of warming alcohol after a day in the cold Pacific or it could be because Zinfandel is more reasonably priced and less pretentious; the ocean has a habit of dismantling egos. My crew is lively. The wine needs to hold its own through talk of drops and airs, haoles and groms, unidentified fins of the animal type and five fin setups on a summertime fish - of the surfboard type. Eric Laumann on Winemaking To create this authorized style of wine I have to bring in the grapes ripe (25+ Brix) or the wine won t have effusive fruit and Zin-appropriate alcohol. Old Vines really help for concentrating spice character and also for even ripening. This wine is a blend of several vineyards just Northwest of the town of Lodi. I estimate the average age of the vines, based on the amount of overall gnarl, between 40 and 50 years. We do an intensive cluster trimming to sort out any fruit killing raisins. This wine was fermented in a traditional California fashion. It was pumped over three times a day and fermented dry on skins. After pressing, the wine was settled for a few weeks before going to barrel with a hazy inference of sediment. Approximately half the barrels were 1 year old and the remainder, older. The wine was racked once, received a one egg white per barrel fining and bottled after 11 months. The Name Surfing rail to rail is a technique that maximizes your speed on a wave, enabling the surfer to unleash cutbacks and aerials, sprays and vertical snaps.) The 2011 Old-Vine Zin Harvest dates: September 3 through September 15, 2011 Blend (Cepage): 95% Zinfandel (Lodi) 5% Tannat (Monterey) Alcohol=15.2% TA=0.58 ph=3.71 Residual Sugar=.02 gms/100ml Cases not consumed by good friends & immediate family: 1885 Surf with etiquette; drink responsibly.
