24 Conference Honoree Dan and Debbie Woehrman Supporters of the Charolais breed, the AIJCA and all that our organization has to offer, this couple has provided much in return to an association that has given them a lifetime of memories made with family and friends. Dan and Debbie Woehrman of Camden Point, Missouri have been more than just a helping hand. Dan who grew up on a small farm in Lansing, Kan., came from a family who was heavily involved in agriculture. Active in -H since the age of seven, he began exhibiting sheep and eventually cattle as well. In college, he worked on a wheat harvest crew in the summers and at the meats lab on campus during the semesters. After graduating from Kanas State University with a degree in meat and animal science, Dan began his career as a slaughter inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Garden City, Kansas and later became a processing inspector at National Beef. Several years later, the Woehrman family moved to Iowa as Dan took a position as a food technologist in Iowa. In 990, Dan & Debbie decided it was time to return home to Kansas City and Dan returned to work for his dad at Callender Printing Co. in Kansas City. by: Meg Johnson, Beaver, Okla. Debbie, originally from Kansas City, started working for the American-International Charolais Association in 99. She held diverse positions starting as the front desk receptionist, transferring to an assistant in the registrations department, and then assisting with activities for the Charolais Journal. Debbie left the AICA in 997, to work for DST Systems as a project manager, but their spark of interest in the Charolais breed had been lit. The Woehrman s started their Charolais herd in 999, when they transitioned from bottle calves to breeding females for their children, Danielle and David. When deciding what breed the children would show and the family would go onto raise, it was never a hard decision. With Debbie s experience at the AICA, the Charolais breed seemed like the only choice. David Hobbs introduced the Woehrman s to the Missouri breeders who welcomed them into the association. Bob Barnard of St. Joseph, Missouri, helped the Woehrman family grow their Charolais herd as he provided the children with several of their Charolais show heifers. Since then the Woehrman family attended every Junior National from their first in 00 at Rochester, Minnesota to their children s last in 008 at Des Moines, Iowa. Danielle and David not only exhibited cattle but participated in the personal development contests and leadership conference. Either way this family never failed to make a trip to Junior National. Always willing to help where needed, Debbie came back to the AICA working part-time as the Director of Youth Activities in 0. She worked hand in hand with the Junior Board and Host Committees as they coordinated the AIJCA Junior National Show & Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri held at the American Royal in conjunction with two other breeds. Dan and Debbie have continued their relationship with the AIJCA Junior Board. Nearly every fall since then, they host the Junior Board of Directors for an evening of home-cooked food and fun. Today, Callender Printing Co., now owned by Dan & Debbie, prints many documents including the show programs, backdrop signs, notebook covers, registration certificates and other various items for the AIJCA and AICA. Long after their children have grown out of the AIJCA, Dan and Debbie continue to support the AIJCA. They look forward to a few years from now when their granddaughter, Danika, can show her first Charolais heifer, but until then, you will find Dan and Debbie attending Junior Nationals, visiting with the juniors and other breeders and enjoying their time spent with the Charolais Association and the many people who are a part of it. 25 Show Dedicatee Alan and Leslie Alexander by: Meg Johnson, Beaver, Okla. This year s Junior National Show Dedicatee is a family from Pasco, Washington, who has traveled many long hours across the country to attend the AIJCA Junior National. At first, it was to attend with their own children, watching them exhibit Charolais cattle and participate in the different contests the AIJCA has to offer. Years later, after their own children had grown, the Alexander s wanted to offer those same opportunities and experiences to other junior members. Ten years ago, Alan and Leslie, made their first trip to Springfield, Missouri as junior advisors, taking two week out of their summer to make the special trip with junior members from the Northwest region whose families could not make the trip themselves. Alan grew up in Pasco with his family, who owned a highway construction company and ranch that raised quarter horses and operated commercial and registered cattle herds. Eventually, transitioning the herd of 00 cattle to registered Charolais in 96. After the family sold the construction company in the mid 970s, they continued to farm and raise cattle. Alan s family had used Charolais bulls on the commercial cowherd to produce offspring with more growth and uniformity. His father retired in 99, and he and Leslie purchased the registered Charolais cows to expand and help progress their own cattle operation. Today, they still operate their Charolais herd, Hang n A Cattle Co., consisting of about 00 head. Leslie grew up in a family that was not involved in agriculture; however, she soon found herself becoming apart of it. After graduating high school, she began working in the livestock market and processing (slaughter) industries. Her career at the slaughter facility consisted of unloading semis, sorting cattle and working with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on health checks. Leslie recently retired after years of working as a state livestock brand inspector. For years, the Alexander s found it important to share with others what this breed association can do for the junior members involved. One of their most memorable trips to Junior National was in 007 at Wichita Falls, Texas, when the Alexanders were honored by the AIJCA as Advisors of the Year alongside their co-advisor Jana Koller. After years of encouraging junior members from the Northwest to be a part of the breed, most members they traveled with to Junior Nationals may have aged out, but they continue to still be active within the Charolais breed. One past junior member, Cody Lacy from Oregon, is now the president for the Northwest Charolais Association and a advisor for the Washington Junior Charolais Association, while also serving on the Activity Committee for the AICA. Another Northwest junior William Kiefer has remained active and participated in the Hang n A Annual Bull Sale. Kiefer also had one the high sellers in their 06 sale and has been a co-owner of several of the Alexander s herd bulls. As well as numerous former junior members that have continued their Charolais herds as AICA members. The Alexander s have not only had an influence for the Charolais breed in the Northwest area, but all breeds as well. In 00, Alan and Leslie started an allbreed junior show that originated out of their barn that has come to be known as the Summer Sizzle. Offering up their own money to help sponsor the Overall Steer jackpot and the Charolais Influenced steer class. At one point the event had to move to the local fairgrounds to accommodate the increased number of entries. It won t be long before you find the Alexander s attending Junior Nationals regularly once again, as they look forward to the many years to come when their youngest grandchild Chase is old enough to become a junior member.
