Dear Parents, NEWSLETTER VOL.1 Welcome to the first ever newsletter for the Air Force School, Chabua. The year 2016 has begun with great change and growth for our school and as part of our expansion and growth we re excited to launch our inaugural newsletter which is a wonderful platform for sharing the happenings of our school with you all. This is our sincere effort to start a tradition of uploading and sharing highlights and news of the school with all of you. This way everyone will be aware of all the happenings in both Pre-Primary and Primary section of the school. In fact, it is a window to all the educational information, helpful hints and tips, upcoming events and activities, achievements and developments of our school. We strongly feel that continuous communication between the school and parents is essential for the holistic development of both the children and school. We want this newsletter to be valuable for you, so kindly share your feedback and suggestions with us to help us improve. Before we move on to the happenings of the current session, here is a letter from the Head Mistress followed by the brief history of school. Dear Parents, Letter from the Headmistress Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man. - Swami Vivekananda It gives me immense pleasure to present before you our first bi-annual newsletter. Besides rigorous scholastic areas, Air Force School, Chabua aims at developing all spheres of a child s personality. Numerous activities are conducted all year round. This newsletter will present a kaleidoscope of events, activities and programmes conducted over the period of six months. It will capture all spheres such as art and craft, dance and music, games and sports, environmental conservation activities and the list goes on. Our e-newsletter is an attempt to promote and foster the originality, ingenuity and creativity of our students, to allow and encourage them to move beyond the confines of convention. I congratulate the entire editorial team- staff and students, for their hard work and dedication in making this dream come true. Page 1
Vision Without Action Is Just a Dream Action Without Vision Just Passes the Time But, Vision and Action Can Change the World Joel A. Barker History of Air Force School Dr Tanima Sarkar Chakravarti Headmistress The Air Force School, Chabua was established in the year 1979 to provide educational facilities for the children of defense personnel posted in this area. It was started under the governance of the IAF Educational and Cultural Society and still functions under the same body. The school was only up to the Pre-Primary level when initiated and has grown over past years. We now have classes till fifth standard which was introduced in the academic session School Now The school has gone through a phase of transformation this year and has had a lot of new developments. The current strength of the school is 280 students. A new building came up as the Pre- Primary section, which is full of colour and character added to it. There is individual space for each child to keep his/her bag and other belongings. They have colourful stickers on the walls to make them more child-friendly. The Primary section also had its share of makeover and there are bigger classrooms for first graders. There are two play areas now and CCTV and Central Addressing System have also been installed in all the classrooms, corridors and the play areas to monitor the activities closely. The garden around the school has always been blooming with different flowers all through the year. A Herbal garden came up this year to make children familiar with common herbs used in our dayto-day life. It consists of lemon grass, turmeric, mint, black pepper and many more. We also have a pair each of rabbits and guinea pigs as school pets. The children are often seen visiting and feeding fresh leaves to them. A Command Education Inspection was held on 27 th June, 2016 and the school has been ranked first for the year in the entire Eastern Air Command. Three new clubs have been introduced this year under which various activities are being organized. The names of the clubs are- Literary Club, Eco Club and Sports Club. A various activities have been conducted under the Literary club and Eco club. Page 2
Literary Club Page 3
Eco Club The students have completed a number of activities under the Eco Club. They have made banners and put around the school to create awareness. They decorated their own pots and take care of them. They also participated in a mass plantation drive and a Polythene Monster was created by the children to make the school a No-Polythene zone. The students also made a compost pit in the school and are regularly seen putting the Good Waste in it. Page 4
The journey of tea from the tea garden to our kitchen is quite interesting. We Indians love our tea more than anything else. For every occasion there is tea. One cup of tea is just not enough for us! Tea likely originated in South- West China during the Shang dynasty as a medicinal drink during the 16 th Century. Drinking tea became popular in Britain during the 17 th Century. The British introduced tea production as well as tea consumption to India in order to compete with the Chinese. The scientific name of tea plant is Camellia Sinesis. Tea was first grown by Maniram Dewan, the first tea planter of Assam. In 1837, the first English tea garden was established at Chabua in Upper Assam and Cinnamora tea garden is considered to be the first tea garden of Assam established by Maniram Dewan. Assam is the biggest producer of tea in India. It is easy to make a cup of tea but the process of manufacturing tea is a lengthy one. Teas are of different varieties- orthodox, green tea and CTC which is the most commonly used tea in our country. CTC means Crush- Tear and Curl. The tea leaves are first plucked from the tea garden. After plucking they are sent to the withering troughs to remove the moisture content in it. After withering the process of crushing, tearing and curling takes place. After this process the tea is fermented in the fermentation room where the colour of the tea is changed to reddish-brown. Then the fermented tea leaves are sent to the dryers where the tea is dried by heating. After heating, the tea is taken to the sorting room where they are sorted in different grades. After sorting, the tea is finally packed and dispatched to the tea auction centres. The buyers buy the tea which is sent to the packaging units and from there it reaches the market thus entering our lives. Tea in India is so popular that it can be easily considered the National drink of India. Some quotes on tea:- A cup of tea is an excuse to share great thoughts with great minds. Sometimes I get sad. But then I think about tea and everything s fine. There is great deal of poetry and fine sentiment in a chest of tea. By Mrs. Archana Malik PRT Page 5

School is the temple of knowledge. As we step in opening the doors of our mind to involve, interact, imbibe and inspire. As a student one has to furnish the mind with good thoughts followed by better actions. As a teacher one has to lead the young mind towards getting enriched with knowledge. Small bit of information gets accumulated and becomes knowledge which in turn becomes wisdom. In the vast ocean, let us immense ourselves and feel the bliss. Learning the basic values is success. It takes a conscious effort to club all the essentials and create perfect assemblage. So let us all join hands and be facilitators and drive the young minds towards humanity, compassion, honesty, truth, knowledge and enlighten them for a better nation. -S.T.
