1 36 Hours on the Brooklyn Waterfront Alicia Ngai Brooklyn Waterfront is a newly developed attraction on the Brooklyn side. The waterfront property allows visitors to experience a breathtaking view of the New York City skyline as well as an up close view of the Brooklyn Bridge. It is a great place for a refreshing snack or a nice cup of coffee. Many artists love this renewal industrial area and many artistic events held here. If you want to escape from the busy Manhattan metropolitan area, the waterfront in Brooklyn distinct can definitely relax and rejuvenate you. FRIDAY 4 p.m. 1. The PowerHouse ARENA The PowerHouse ARENA specializes in artistic books, unlike traditional bookstores, it has literary events and guests talk on a regular basis. It also sells multiple creative gift items and cards. The blue and red spiral stationary adorns the wall next to the colorful framed photographs which create a cool effect for the spot. 2 5:30 p.m. 2. rerun Theatre All movies are original by independent film makers and tickets are usually $10. If you are over 21 of age, this unique theater will definitely create a special evening for you. The recycled car seat sitting and a full bar can definitely stand out from local theater. Plenty of snacks are served at the concession area, but try a bag of popcorn with herb salt and duck fat ($5/$7). The Q and A session after the movie is also a big plus for the theater experience. People can use their sewing machines and most of the labs materials are free of charge. Besides free workshops, Etsy Lab also sells many individual craft items from all over the world. 3 8:00 p.m. 4. Grimaldi s Right under the Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldi s is definitely worth an hour wait in line. This always crowded pizza joint have a no-slice policy, which means you must order the whole pizza. If weather permit, guests may have a chance to enjoy the Manhattan skyline with famous fresh made pizza. Brunch in Iris Brunch has become more and more popular in America. Iris Café, a cozy little restaurant with wood and brick interior, provides a daily selection of house made pastries and also many healthy options. 4 Noon 6. A Hand in Brooklyn Join the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and be a volunteer for a few hours inside the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Through this non-profit organization, you can help the environment by planting trees, removing litter or even assist with the annual 40-mile waterfront epic ride events. This colorful candy store has a great variety of candies from hard to soft and even limited edition sweets for $11/pound. Additionally, the well-known chocolate store, Jacques Torres Chocolate, is close to the candy store. Remember to grab the wicked hot chocolate ($5) before you leave the area. 5 5:00 p.m. 8. Taxi on the Water It is time to enjoy the boat ride and listen to the history of NYC. Inside of the yellow NY Water Taxi, the snacks are served free, but there is a charge for alcoholic beverages. The water taxi will pass by the Statue of Liberty and give visitors a quick look at all the must see sights in NYC. Also, the well-trained tour guides are willing to answer questions about the city. Sunset with the Skyscrapers Back to the Brooklyn Waterfront; grab a scoop or two homemade ice-creams from the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory ($4/$6) and have a seat near the Jane s Carousel open area. The beautiful sunset with the massive amount of skyscrapers create a unique skyline in Manhattan. This incredible experience will be the highlight for the whole trip.

6 7:00 p.m. 10. A Taste of Italian Almar is an affordable Italian restaurant in the DUMBO area. This warehouse like restaurant creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for their customers. Besides the great ambiance and décor, the Alfredo s meatballs ($9) and Lasagna Bolognese ($16) are made to perfection. Remember to save a room for their famous tiramisu because it is simply amazing. They have a variety of coffee beans and some fresh bake goods on the counter. After a taste of their amazing Maple Shay Shay ($4), you can buy a bag of their coffee bean and bring it home. 7 9:00 a.m. 12. Volunteer for Seasonal Event If you are interested in architecture and design, volunteer for the Open House New York (OHNY) will be a right fit for you. OHNY is an event to celebrate the excellent design and architectures in the NYC and plan to inspire and educate the public about the cultural heritage and active design. Volunteers can be carry different responsibility due to their assigned position, such as meet and greet visitors, manage lines and work with the sponsors. Refresh in DUMBO The Smorgasburg flea market is beloved by all the New Yorker. Many famous and delicious foods are selling in this food-only Sunday market and you will not regret the long wait for the foods. Get all the foods you want and bring them to the Picnic area near the Pier 1. Enjoy the day with great foods and stimulate your taste with a special West Indian drink, City Lasses ($5). 8 A Place to Stay: Nu Hotel Photo source: nuhotelbrooklyn.com Nu Hotel is a boutique hotel located in downtown Brooklyn. Many transportation options are provided and a lot of attractions can be reached within walking distance. The price range for a standard queen room is about $280 and packages are available through their website. It is worth the price because of the singular design of each room. The modern and artistic style makes it look more like an art studio than a hotel room. Nu Hotel also provides excellent service; they give out free service like complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi and even I-Pads rental. Pets are also allowed with a fee apply.
