1 3rd Floor, Ibex House Minories London EC3N 1DY T: +44 (0) F: +44 (0) FAIRTRADE COLLEGE RENEWAL FEEDBACK FORM Complete and return to renew your Fairtrade status! Name of University/College: Contact name: Position of contact: Address: Telephone: address: Total number of students enrolled: Date of submission: 24 May 2012 Salford City College Barbara Weilding Deputy Learner Services Manager Walkden Centre, Walkden Road, Worsley 15,

2 Goal 1: The Student Union (SU) and the University/College authorities sign a Fairtrade policy. Annual review of policy to deepen the university/college commitment. How has the policy been maintained? Has anything been added to the policy following review? How is the Students Union implementing the policy? How is the University/College Authority implementing the policy? Please include a copy of the latest policy. Actions taken: The Management of the policy has been reassigned from the Catering Department to the Learner Services Department which is the responsibility of the Assistant Principal (Learner Services) and therefore it has been reviewed from a different perspective. The policy ensures that Fairtrade is at the heart of not only the college services as per the previous policy but also the student enrichment activities and tutorials. The Policy has been reviewed and amended in line with student views. The range of provision has been extended across all five sites following the merger of three Colleges into Salford City College. A signed copy is attached Result: Goal Maintained Comments and further appropriate actions: Congratulations on successfully meeting this goal and securing the support of the College authorities, the Students and catering, for Fairtrade. You have a great policy that effectively meets all five goals necessary to achieve and maintain Fairtrade status. At your yearly review, please consider revising the policy slightly to include more detailed information on how you aim to achieve and maintain these goals, in order to keep the policy specific and relevant to your campaign. We look forward to seeing how your policy is developed and further integrated in the future! Well done and keep up the good work! Goal 2: Fairtrade products including food and cotton are made available for sale in all campus shops. The availability and use of Fairtrade products throughout the university/college increases year on year. The university/college and Student Union commits to sourcing Fairtrade cotton products in their purchasing (for example staff uniforms, course wear and merchandise) Is there a wider variety of products now on offer? What new products have you investigated bringing on to campus? What Fairtrade cotton products have been purchased by the university/college/su? How are Fairtrade products promoted at the point of sale? Date achieved: Renewal granted 2010 Details: The availability and use of Fairtrade products has increased year on year. We have increased the availability of the Fairtrade products by opening additional outlets at our Walkden and Eccles sites. We now have a wider range of goods on offer and have started selling jewellery through Tradecraft. We have investigated the purchasing of some cotton items and have purchased a range of items which we sell in our shops, and are also used by the Marketing - 2 -

3 Department, Student Council and student body as a whole for activities and events e.g. cotton bags, T-shirts, footballs, cards and gifts etc. The products are promoted at the point of sale and at key places throughout the sites through Fairtrade posters, stands and displays. The Student Newsletter and display screens show any offers and promotions that the College is supporting. Please list all outlets on campus that sell directly to staff or students, including canteens and coffee shops; indicate who they are run/catered by and give details of all Fairtrade products on offer with brands and, where possible, sales figures (N.B. complimentary offerings such as conference catering should be listed in Goal 3). 4 We also ensure that our adult students and those using the facilities in the evening are able to purchase Fairtrade products by ensuring that all vending machines across all sites only use Fairtrade products. We also sell Fairtrade wine for our evening performances at the Pendleton centre and the college restaurant La Sallion run by catering students also uses Fairtrade products and sells Fairtrade wine. Actions taken e.g. new products trialled, change of staff uniform to Fairtrade cotton etc: We have trialled the purchase and sale of goods other than food and drink e.g. hoodies, cards and gifts, footballs etc. The College football team are to purchase Fairtrade football kits for Result: Goal Maintained Comments and further appropriate actions: Well done on making a good start by selling a variety of basic confectionary and refreshment items and it is great to see you stocking Fairtrade muffins and cakes. It is especially great to see that you stock Fairtrade footballs, jewellery, cotton bags and T- shirts. It is also great to see the percentage increase in Dairy Milk, Kitkat and Traidcraft card and gift sales. Well done on introducing in house flapjacks and planning to purchase Fairtrade football kits for 2012/2013! It is however noticeable that Fairtrade wine has experienced a drop in sales and this is perhaps something that you choose to address in the awareness-raising part of your campaign, for example in the form of a wine tasting event. Your Fairtrade policy denotes feasibility as a factor in selling Fairtrade products. Make sure to lobby your catering services and suppliers to continue providing Fairtrade products at a competitive price (FAQ: competitive pricing/value for money?). There are also a wide range of suppliers selling Fairtrade products already working with many different schools, colleges and universities. It is brilliant to see that you stock Fairtrade T-Shirts as this is a crucial cash crop for many developing countries. The range of Fairtrade products available is increasing all the time please visit the Fairtrade products webpage for up-to-date details. Fairtrade rice is now available, both in catering and retail packs, so could be used in your canteens as well as sold in your campus shops. Rice is one of the world s most important agricultural commodities and one of the most significant for farmers in developing countries. If necessary, we suggest you push for more cooperation from your catering services and their suppliers. Also, Fairtrade baked beans are now available - they re organic too and bound to be a favourite with students! Furthermore, Fairtrade olive oil is now available, and can be purchased from the NUSSL list as well as from a wide range of health food shops, delicatessens and online stores including Whole Foods Market, so could be used in your canteens as well as sold in your campus shops. Olive production is a vital source of livelihood income for Palestinian communities. It is often the only feasible agricultural activity that can take place on fragile and marginal lands and is a crucial alternative to abandonment or desertification. A strong, sustainable economy is a vital component of a viable future Palestinian state. And olive oil is at the - 4 -

5 heart of the Palestinian economy. It contributes around a sixth of total agricultural output, and some 100,000 Palestinian families depend on the olive harvest. As a result of the conflict in the region, Palestinian farmers continue to face severe barriers in carrying out their normal day-to-day agricultural activities caused through restrictions on movement and water shortages which exacerbate levels of deprivation and marginalisation. Of around 15,000 tons of olive oil produced each year, as little as one third leaves the country. Unable to reach foreign markets, Palestinian farmers are depleting their savings, selling their assets and entering a cycle of debt. The FAIRTRADE Mark helps increase their access to international markets and provide opportunities to earn more sustainable incomes. Palestine is the land where olive oil cultivation first began; so you can be assured that the soil and the climate produce some of the world s highest quality olive oil. You can learn more about the Fairtrade olive oil organisation Zaytoun here: Have you thought about producing a Fairtrade directory to let everyone know where Fairtrade goods and food are available on campus? This can be a great way of raising awareness about Fairtrade please have a look at our resources page for more ideas and promotional materials. It is great to see your progress and what you have achieved so far and we look forward to seeing your range of Fairtrade product increase! Goal 3: Fairtrade products are served at all meetings and events hosted by the University /College and the Student Union (or equivalent), including internal management meetings. Tea, coffee and sugar to be served as standard with other Fairtrade products being introduced (e.g. biscuits and juice) where possible. What further steps has the university/college taken to make Fairtrade products more widely available in meetings? Are Fairtrade products served in conferences? Are Fairtrade juices, wine, fresh fruit and snacks available? Are all departments using Fairtrade tea and coffee? Date achieved: Renewal granted 2010 Details: please list all regular meetings and major events with complimentary offerings, indicating who they are hosted and catered by; and give details of all Fairtrade products on offer with brands. (N.B. point of sale offerings such as canteen meal should be listed in Goal 2)

Fairtrade has also been extended to the Trinity Business Centre which holds internal and external conferences, seminars and training events. The promotion of Fairtrade and the College s commitment to it is communicated to all other external organisations who use the College and its facilities. Result: Goal Maintained Comments and further appropriate actions: It is wonderful to see Fairtrade products served at all regular and major events! All your vending machines and serve coffee as well as coffee, tea, hot chocolate and sugar sachets being served in all dining outlets. Keep up the good work! Goal 4: Campaigns are run on campus to increase the understanding of Fairtrade and consumption of Fairtrade products. This should include student events, actions and trade justice awareness raising as well as integrating Fairtrade in to subject teaching where appropriate and using a social media group for your campaign (i.e. facebook, twitter) What additional events have been organised over the past year? What press/media coverage has been achieved? Please include as many photos and examples of coverage as possible. Has teaching on Fairtrade been incorporated in to any courses? Have you used a social media tool to promote your activities? Date achieved: Renewal granted 2010 Calendar of events - 6 -

See Further details (Please give details of special events or promotions and attach copies of any relevant articles and images): A group of five Art and Design students chose a variety of designs and produced a collage promoting Fairtrade. This was displayed in the College canteen and was promoted on the front page of the Student Newsletter (Issue 21 week commencing 7 March). A group of Hair & Beauty students developed and held a Fairtrade Pamper Day for staff and students; they researched which products could be used and using these products gave facial and nail treatments

8 A group of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students brainstormed ideas and decided to hold a blind tasting event for other students in the college. The students were from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and countries e.g. Iran, Iraq, Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Nigeria, Portugal, Japan, Italy/Iran, Congo and Latvia, therefore, for them this exercise was extremely challenging but something which they felt strongly about. A 'blind taste test' was carried out where the Level 2 students tried two types of tea, coffee, orange juice and chocolate before voting for their preference. The results showed that they had chosen the Fairtrade products. The students thought this would be a powerful exercise to replicate as a College event. The students also had the idea of a controlled discussion as a way of introducing the taste test. Konnekt to Communities - Fairtrade Project. A key aspect of this project was to engage a core group of learners and empower them with the requisite skills, to research overseas Fairtrade villages and identify a community which has elected to use their Premium for educational purposes. The core group of learners would make recommendations to the wider College community concerning the overseas schools initiative. Initial consultation concerning the proposed project has already commenced by way of discussions with the Students Enrichment Focus Group and the Students Council at the Pendleton Centre. This provided an opportunity to ascertain learner interest and support for the project; early indications were that the students were in support of the proposed project. Unfortunately, funding for this project was not available at that time so the project was put on hold. Any other progress or achievements (e.g. Fairtrade teaching in courses, collaboration with other Fairtrade campaign groups, other creative campaigning): The College promoted and advertised it s Fairtrade activities and events in the local newspaper the Salford Advertiser which was distributed to over 75,000 homes; In liaison with the College Marketing Department a College Community newsletter was also distributed to 75,000 homes in the City which again promoted and advertised it s Fairtrade activities and events. The College Catering & Retail Manager conducted a radio interview with Salford City Radio and Manchester BBC radio discussing what the College staff and students have done within the college and the community at large to raise awareness about the benefits of Fairtrade. In liaison with the College Media Department, staff and students ensured that all our events and activities were advertised to the public and the wider communities through: College public website Facebook; Twitter; We also used the College intranet to promote activities within College to students and staff using a PowerPoint presentation written by the Fairtrade College Staff and Student Focus Group. (Attached) ESOL students also produced their own PowerPoint presentation. (Attached) At the Networking Event we we re honoured with the attendance of: The Mayor of Salford, Councillor Eric Burgoyne, Harriet Lamb, Darren Sherridan, Professional footballer and Assistant Manager at Wigan FC, Chino (Blueberry Farmer from Peru)

9 Result: Goal Maintained Comments and further appropriate actions: Well done on a great number and range of events, with a high turnout also! You have also generated an incredible amount of publicity from your local newspaper and social media such as through facebook and twitter. I especially liked the number and variety of (blind)/tasting sessions, the pamper session and the World Fairtrade Breakfast where you provided breakfast for the whole campus. The Konnekt to Communities - Fairtrade Project also sounded really good and you may want to apply for the Fairtrade Campaign Awards to add to the funding needed for your project. This is the link: ign_awards_2012.aspx You have excelled at reaching a wide range of campus groups by including University and Student Union staff in your campaigns and by targeting new students early on. It is great to see that you have events during fresher s week as this is a great opportunity to inform new students about the Fairtrade status of the College and hopefully engage new student into the Fairtrade movement. Thank you for including detailed PowerPoint s and pdfs/posters with photos of the events they were clearly well attended! Your events are creative and we commend you on achieving superb media coverage! Your media coverage is extremely impressive and highlights your commitment to raising awareness about Fairtrade both on campus and in the community. Well done for your excellent use of publications and your website which keeps staff and students informed of your commitments to Fairtrade and helps to raise awareness of what Fairtrade means. In order to strengthen your campaign, you may want to consider getting in touch with other local Fairtrade initiatives in your area. You may find this useful for sharing knowledge and ideas, and also for organising larger joint events in the future. Our Map of Local Campaigns is a good starting point. Also, please consider getting in touch with your local Fairtrade town to run joint campaigns in future. For next year, quite simply, keep up the good work organising events throughout the year to maintain the momentum behind the scheme and reminding your community that Fairtrade is not only for fortnight but for life. It is important that events are held throughout the year, not only the fortnight. It is great to see that time is being dedicated to Fairtrade during tutorials and we hope you will be able to expand the inclusion of Fairtrade in the curriculum in the future. Goal 5: A Fairtrade Steering Group is established, with representatives from the student body, University/College staff and catering or procurement department

10 How often has the group met over the past year? How have they maintained the work? Please include 2 sets of minutes and an up to date list of steering group members and contact details. The College is introducing and installing Traid recycling clothes banks at all 4 of the main centres. Result: Goal Maintained Comments and further appropriate actions: Well done for forming what is clearly a proactive Steering Group which includes representatives from all the appropriate groups. You have a good Steering Group with representatives from a variety of groups across campus and your number continues to increase. You also stress student involvement, which is key. Keep up the good work! Do not forget to inform us of any changes to the steering group or changes in contact details of any steering group members. From your minutes I would like to congratulate you on your action planning (setting deadlines and dates for follow up meetings) and very organised and strategic approach to the application. You have planned and suggested a wide range of events outside of Fairtrade fortnight which is great to see. CONGRATULATIONS! We are delighted to renew Salford City College s Fairtrade Status and thank you for your continuing hard work and support. Salford City College is clearly committed to Fairtrade, and this shows in your success in upholding and surpassing the 5 goals. Well done we look forward to seeing how your campaign develops and what activities you have planned in the coming year. Please note that we have updated the renewal process recently and from now on you only need to renew every 2 years. We aim to allow you to concentrate on campaigning opposed to renewal applications. Please make sure you continue holding events throughout the year and gathering evidence for your renewal in July 2014: the latest version of the renewal form
