2 Read the following passage to answer questions 9-10: English colonists enjoyed a fair share of autonomy, or self-government, but were still technically under the rule of Great Britain. One of England s original reasons for colonizing North America was to obtain wealth, and so the English rulers taxed the American Colonies in order to get funds. The Molasses Act is a good example of how this worked. The colonists used molasses, a thick sweetener made from the sugar refining process, in many of their foods. They used it in baked goods and poured it on their pancakes, as well as used to it make rum, which was a valuable commodity to trade. Great Britain, trying to make money off of their love for molasses, placed a tax on all molasses that the colonists bought from the Dutch, French, and Spanish colonists in the Caribbean, so that they would buy sugar from British plantation in the West Indies instead. This made the colonists terribly angry. In this case, eventually, Great Britain dropped the tax. 9. Which of the following topic sentences is best supported by the information in the passage? A.
