3 African Milk Bush Synadenium compactum Synadenium compactum var. rubrum (African Milk Bush) - A upright semievergreen to deciduous (in California) shrub that grows typically to 6 to 15 feet tall but in habitat to over 20 feet. It has thick 5-8 inch long leaves that can be entirely red or green, or a combination of both on the upper surface and purple-red beneath. Occasionally blooms with minute red flowers (bracts). Plant in full sun to light shade. Give occasional to little irrigation. It is frost tender but leaves reemerge without stem damage after mild frosts and the plant can resprout from base if top is frozen at short duration temperatures much below 25 F.

11 Alternanthera Ruby Alternanthera dentate Purple Grown exclusively for its colorful foliage - rich purple to burgundy leaves. Forms spreading foliage mounds to 12-30" tall. Common names - Joseph's coat, copperleaf, calico plant, bloodleaf, joyweed and parrot leaf - all in reference to the often brilliantly colored leaves which provide foliage contrast to gardens and container plantings.best foliage colors are developed in full sun. It grows better in organically rich and consistently moist, well-drained soils, But not completely dry out. May also be grown indoors as a houseplant as long as it is sited in a bright, sunny location and soils are kept moist.. Pinching stems or shearing will keep plants compact and bushy.

12 Althea Red Heart White Hibiscus syriacus Red Heart The Rose of Sharon plant can be grown in the garden throughout the whole year. It doesn't fear cold weather and it bears very harsh minimum temperatures. It needs to be in a place where it is exposed to at least a few hours of direct sunlight. They tend to develop like erect small trees. The Rose of Sharon develops like a shrub. Rose of Sharon isn't an evergreen; during the spring it assumes a red white coloring; the adult species are medium in size and reach 8-10 ft in height. Fertilize every three months during blooming season.

14 Amaryllis Amaryllis sp. Amaryllis (Hippeastrum species) are popular for their 6 to 10 inch trumpet shaped flowers that are born on 1 to 2 foot stalks (scapes). Although red and scarlet are the most popular colors, the flowers may be pink, white, salmon, apricot, rose, bicolor or picotee (petals with a different edge color) and in both single and double forms. Because they can produce flowers in mid-winter, they are prized for the color they add to indoor landscapes. Amaryllis may be purchased as bulbs or plants, in or near bloom. Blooming plants are often given and received as gifts. Amaryllis plants should be kept out of direct sunlight while they are in flower to prolong the life of the flowers.

15 American Beautyberry Callicarpa americana American beauty-berry most often grows 3-5 ft. tall and usually just as wide, It can reach 9 ft. in height in favorable soil and moisture conditions. It has long, arching branches and yellow-green fall foliage, but its most striking feature is the clusters of glossy, iridescent-purple fruit (sometimes white) which hug the branches at leaf axils in the fall and winter. Bark light brown on the older wood, reddish brown on younger wood. Bark smooth, with elongate, raised corky areas (lenticels); twigs round to 4 sided, covered with branched hairs visible under a l0x hand lens. Leaves in pairs or in threes, blades half as wide as long and up to 9 inches long, ovate to elliptic, pointed or blunt at the tip and tapered to the base; margins coarsely toothed except toward the base and near the tip, teeth pointed or rounded; lower surface of young leaves covered with branched hairs. Flowers small, pink, in dense clusters at the bases of the leaves, clusters usually not exceeding the leaf petioles. Fruit distinctly colored, rose pink or lavender pink, berrylike, about 1/4 inch long and 3/16 inch wide, in showy clusters, persisting after the leaves have fallen.

16 Aniscanthus Flame Aniscanthus quadifidus Flame Anisacanthus, as the name implies, is related to Bear's Breeches (Acanthus). There are around 18 species in the genus Anisacanthus, all native to the Americas. The common names of Anisacanthus are Hummingbird bush, Flame Acanthus, Texas Firecracker, Desert Honeysuckle. The plant attracts hummingbirds (and butterflies), has orange-red tube-shaped flowers, is drought-tolerant, and is not palatable to deer.

17 Aristea Blue Stars Aristea ecklonii Aristea ecklonii is a spreading evergreen perennial with stiff, upright, grasslike leaves that grow in tall in a tight clump. In spring or early summer, flowering stalks covered with dozens of small blue saucer shaped flowers stand above the leaves. Each flower lasts for only one day and is open only in bright light, but the whole inflorescence makes a spectacular display above the grassy foliage.

20 Bamboo Multiplex Alphonse Karr Bambusa multiplex Alphonse Karr The culms on this bamboo are golden with random green stripes of variable width. The golden color of the culms takes on a magenta cast when exposed to bright sunlight, as visible on the large culm in this picture. This bamboo makes a wonderful container plant. It, like other forms of Bambusa multiplex, are among the best bamboos for a well lit area indoors. Bambusas generally grow a very tight cluster of canes, and 'Alphonse Karr' is no exception, making it an excellent choice for a privacy screen where a clumping bamboo is desired. Tolerance of full sun makes it versatile, though the canes will show significant die back in the winter if exposed to temperature colder than 20 F.

21 Barbados Cherry Malpighia glabra Nana A unique & colorful native shrub with pink and white flowers summer & fall, then producing an abundance of red cherry like fruit. Evergreen most winters. The dwarf variety (Malpighia glabra nana ) makes a 3-4 rounded shrub whereas the standard Barbados Cherry forms an upright 7-9 plant. Barbados Cherry is tough, drought tolerant & grows in full sun or part shade. It s also an excellent bird food source.

22 Barleria - White Barleria cristata White Grows into a shapely shrub with minimal pruning. The trumpet-shaped 2" long, white flowers opening in terminal clusters in November and continue into mid-december. This is an easy-to-grow shrub, about 4-6ft height, which can be used for a garden hedge or tightly clipped into geometrical shapes. Barleria is easily propagated from cuttings planted in fall directly in the ground. It requires some sun to flower profusely and occasional pruning to promote bushy growth.

24 Batface Cuphea Cuphea llavea Masses of unique flowers shower this colorful shrub over a long season. Named for its resemblance to a bat: the dark purple flower is the face and the red lobes are the ears. Thrives in heat, tolerates drought and attracts hummingbirds. A showy addition to the color border. Evergreen above 25 Fahrenheit.

26 Bellyache Bush Jatropha gossypiifolia var. elegans This bush has the most beautiful foliage you'll ever see! The new leaves on the top of each branch are a lovely purple-red which contrast with the small scarlet blooms, which attract small butterflies and other pollinators, and the large bright green seed pods. The leaves shine in the sun and it will reach 3' tall and easily as wide in one growing season. Grow in full sun or part shade (but the lovely color on the leaves shows better in the sun). Hardy to zone 9b/10 - self sowing annual in other zones. I have not had good luck growing these in containers - they do MUCH, MUCH better growing directly in the ground in sandy, well draining, fairly dry soil and full sun. If you'd like to grow in a container, provide very good drainage and use a sandy potting mix water only when top 1" of soil is dry.

27 Blackhaw Viburum Viburnum prunifolium Cultural Requirements: Best in sun or shade in any soil type, even dry soils. Considered very drought tolerant. Ornamental Characteristics: Multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with attractive horizontal branching. Dark green leaves turn a reddish-purple in the fall. Creamywhite, flat topped, flowers appear in May. Edible fruit change from pinkish rose to bluish-black at maturity. Uses in the Landscape: Use as a small specimen tree, in mass, in a shrub border, or in groupings. Aerial Salt Tolerance: Moderate degree of salt tolerance; use in low exposed areas

28 Bluebonnet Lupinus texenis A hardy winter annual native to Texas. Adopted as the "State Flower of Texas", this is the most commonly seen variety along roadsides and in uncultivated pastures throughout the state. Flowers are densely arranged on a spike with a characteristic ice white terminal tip. Bluebonnets cannot tolerate poorly drained, clay based soils. Seed planted in poorly drained soils will germinate, but plants will never fully develop. Seedlings will become either stunted or turn yellow and soon die. Prefers a sloped area in light to gravelly, well-drained soil. Requires full sun.

30 Blue Potato Vine Solanum crispum It is often described as a "wall shrub," which best captures its nature. It gets round & bushy, so has to be annually trimmed back to the wall to retain a semblance of vining appearance. It's best to prune it closer to the trellis every spring, taking care not to harm saved bits since these may be brittle. It grows rapidly & blooms profusely after such a trim. As a Wall Shrub, it's hard to beat, thickly covered over with clusters of the brightest blue & orange little blooms, with rapid growth to the considerable height of ten to fifteen feet in a single year. It is nearly evergreen in warmer climates than ours though best described as "semideciduous" around here. If the main woody vine is trained well.

31 Bonsai In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and color of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming.

33 Bouquet Hoya Hoya carnosa Given enough light, the plant will produce parachute clusters of sweet-scented, starshaped, white to pink flowers with five-point centers. This plant blooms best when slightly pot - bound, so move it to a slightly larger pot only every couple years or when needed. Do not move the plant when buds are forming, because this may cause them to drop. Don't prune off the leafless stem -- or spur -- where flowers have been produced because flowers will form on the same spurs year after year. To show off its thickly-leafed vines, and to give them a denser appearance, loop them around a wire hoop or trellis and tie loosely with florists wire. This is a long-lived plant and easy to grow with little attention.

35 Brazilian Red Cloak Megaskepasma erythrochlamys The Brazilian Red Cloak is a tropical shrub that makes a statement in any landscape (zone 9-11). It has very large, light green, heavy leaves, making it well suited for an application where the goal is to hide an eyesore, or to provide privacy. Add to that a constant bloom of large, upright cymes of pink to bright red flowers and you have a WOW specimen shrub that makes people take notice. The Red Cloak is well suited to almost any cultural situation. It will grow just as well in shade as in full sun. It is partial to light, high organic soil, but will also thrive in very poor soil. It would rather have a moist condition, but again, will do just find in dry settings. If you apply heavy organic mulch, fertilizer 2 or 3 times a year, water once in a while, your plant will be the talk of the neighborhood. The plant forms a clump of spreading stems, each topped with tall spikes of bright flowers. The individual flowers are white, or pale pink. What makes them so outstanding is that the tall spikes are almost totally enclosed by bright red bracts. Mature plants (2 years and older) will bloom almost all year. Ideal growing conditions will yield a plant that is up to 15 feet tall, and just as wide. Not to worry if your space is not that large as this plant takes well to hand pruning.

36 Brazilian Snap Dragon Otacanthus azureus This bushy house plant bears beautiful azureblue, snapdragon-like flowers in abundance nearly all year long. The flowers are long lasting when cut and its foliage has an aromatic, minty scent.

37 Bromeliad Matchstick Aechmea gamosepala Bromeliads [Bro-MIL-ee-ads] are a family of over 2,000 tropical American plants that includes Spanish Moss and the edible Pineapple. They're commonly called "air plants" or "epiphytes" for their habit of growing up in the air on tree limbs and crotches, or in rock crevices, free of any connection with the ground beneath. (A few species grow on the ground, rooted in the soil.) Bromeliads are valued for the many forms, textures and colors of their leaves and for their showy, long-lasting flowers. As a bonus, they're among the easiest of indoor plants to grow and maintain.

39 Buddleia Black Knight Buddleia davidii Black Knight Butterfly bushes are carefree deciduous shrubs that are reliably fragrant and easy to grow. Black Knight' has deep purple-blue, almost black, flowers in elongated clusters on arching branches to 10 feet tall if not cut back, and half that size if cut back. The blooms come from early summer to first frost. The foliage is willow-like and grayish green. Nearly black flowers. Attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Easy to grow, but is in invasive in some areas. Fast grower. Easy to grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Prune back or cut to the ground in late winter or early spring. Deadhead regularly.

46 Butterfly Weed White Asclepias physocarpa It readily establishes from flower seeds, and it produces clear white flowers and dark green foliage. Flowers are long lasting and bloom early summer and into the fall depending on the weather. The flowers, which are heavily laden with nectar and pollen, are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. Butterfly Weed is actually a prized perennial for attracting monarch butterflies and supporting the monarch caterpillars.

47 Cactus Rose Pereskia bleo It may seem strange at first that it can be a cactus with leaves. In fact, this genus of plants is determined one of the two genera from which all other cacti evolved. If one look closely at the stem of the Pereskia, a tell-tale feature that it is a cactus is evident via its cluster of spines grow from specialized structures called areoles which is a feature that all true cactus species have. Some English common names include Leaf Cactus, Rose Cactus and Wax Rose. These common names somewhat describe some characteristics of this plant. Pereskia bleo is a true cactus and it is one with leaves unlike many others that are commonly grown as houseplants. The latter two common names very well describe its rather large and highly ornamental flowers with multiple thick orange petals that are arranged in almost the same manner as seen in roses. After flowering, plants produce interesting, funnel-looking fruits which ripen into a bright orange color.

It is also commonly called ringworm cassia because the plant leaves were once used to treat ringworm. It is an evergreen tropical shrub or tree that typically grows to tall in its native habitat. It can grow rapidly to 6-8 tall in a single growing season if started by seed indoors in late winter. Features pinnately compound medium to dark green leaves (to 30 long), each with 7-14 pairs of leaflets. Bright yellow 5-petaled cup-shaped flowers bloom bottom to top in erect axillary racemes in fall. Flowers give way to winged bean-like seedpods (6-8 long) which also add ornamental interest.

Some of the most striking cultivars have red or variegated foliage. Canna flowers are asymmetrical, with three petals, three sepals and three highly modified showy petal-like stamens. They come in a rainbow of shades from yellows, oranges, reds and pinks. The flowers are followed by a capsule with round, shotlike seeds.

56 Cereus Night Blooming Epiphyllum oxypetalum Epiphyllum Oxypetalum is a night blooming succulent cactus of the type called an epiphyte. Oxypetalum is also called 'Dutchman's Pipe' after the trailing habit of the flower buds which resemble little round bowled pipes. Epiphytes grow in the upper story of tropical jungles by clinging to trees; but they are not parasites. This cactus is a night bloomer whose fragrant flowers last 1 to 3 days. Oxypetalum forms the buds during early spring and blooms with the arrival of cooler fall temperatures. The leaves are broad and do not resemble the usual fleshy leaves of other succulents. Epiphyllums are easy to grow and with proper care will produce abundant blooms.

57 Chenille Plant, Dwarf Acalypha pendula The Dwarf Chenille, like its big sister Acalypha hispida, is a very showy plant. It blooms almost all year with red, furry cattail type flowers. When the bloom period is taking a rest, the small serrated leaves on trailing stems turn this in to a very attractive foliage plant. Dwarf Chenille can be planted in the ground as an excellent ground cover. It will reach 6 to 12 inches in height with little red cattails sticking their heads up above the green foliage. The foliage will become very dense covering every square inch of the ground. It could be placed in a hanging basket, allowing the stems to spill out below the basket with the cattails popping out all around.

An easy tropical or perennial vine. Maybe somewhat more cold tolerant than the White Bleeding heart vine. 63 Giant Coneflower Rudbeckia maxima A coarse-textured perennial with unusual basal blue-gray paddleshaped leaves that are 12 to 24 inches long, 8 to 10 inches across, and appear sessile. It flowers profusely with blooms slightly more than three inches wide with drooping yellow ray flowers attached to a tall black cone, but flowers are dwarfed by the foliage. Plant Type: perennial

Once a very common plant throughout the South, Confederate rose is an interesting and attractive plant that grows in full sun or partial shade, and prefers rich, well-drained soil. Later, thin dark pods about 8 inches long open to expose brilliant red (and poisonous) seeds inside. Its trunk and branches have stout, curved thorns, and the heart-shaped leaves are glossy green. Coral bean is very cold tender, and above 28 degrees F. it will die back to the roots like a perennial, but will return in the spring, often reaching 3 to 5 feet in a season. It grows along the U.S. southeast coastal plains and in East Texas in sandy open woods, but can adapt to clay and other soils. A good choice for hot, sunny sites, coral bean is moderately drought tolerant once established, and grows best in well-drained soil. Hummingbirds are attracted to the red, showy flowers.

78 Cuban Oregano Plectranthus amboinicus Variegatus The irregular, bright creamy white edges of this succulent tender perennial mint really stand out in hot, summer gardens and containers. It withstands high heat and considerable drought. A member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), it is favored as both a culinary herb and an attractive ornamental. The leaves have a strong, oregano-like flavor and are commonly added fresh or dried to flavor stews, poultry or red meat. The soft, graygreen plants have a spreading habit and are excellent for container culture and rock gardens. Succulent branched stems are lined with large, fleshy round gray-green leaves with creamy white, scalloped edges and a hairy surface texture. These are evergreen in frost-free climates and have a strong herbal smell when crushed. Tall, loose spikes of tubular, two-lipped, lavender-pink or white flowers appear in summer. These are visited by bees and butterflies and are followed by inconspicuous brown fruits. Deadheading will extend blooming. Full sun and average to poor, well-drained soil is preferred.
