AUGUST-SEPTEMBER CALLIANTHUS MURIELAE (Acidanthera) WHITE, PURPLE SPOT 90 CM. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 6-8 ALLIUM. Many hundreds of Allium species exist, but only a modest few have made a name for themselves as garden plants. This text describes the most significant ones. The genus, Allium also includes important plants used for human consumption such as onions, leeks, shallots and the familiar cooking herb, chives. The natural distribution of these species is limited to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The ornamental onions distinguish themselves by their great diversity in colour, inflorescence and flowering height. Many species bloom in early summer - just after the spring-flowering period and just before the exuberant full bloom of summer. When slightly bruised, the bulbs, leaves and stems of these plants give off a definite onion scent. Although this has been considered a problem when using ornamental onions as cut flowers, the odour quickly disperses after the stems have been immersed in water for a few moments. Naturally, only the tall and middle-tall species are used as cut flowers. Several species require a bit of special treatment, but will remain beautiful for a long time, even as dried flowers. All species can be used in the border. Certain small species are just perfect for a rock garden, and several lend themselves to naturalising. Very often Anemone coronaria is sold mixed. Even the small corms (2-3 cm) will flower! Anemone coronaria single flowering version is also called the "Florist" or " Poppy-flowered" Anemones. We divide them into two groups: Anemone coronaria 'De Caen' varieties (single flowered) and 'St. Brigid' varieties (double flowered). (Many people start up begonias indoors 4-6 weeks before planting them outdoors to get a "jump" on the season and produce earlier blooms. In fall dig up the bulbs before the first night frost and store them, layered in peat or vermiculite, in a cool dry place, for replanting the following spring. Its enormously tall flower clusters - towering up to 65 inches (175 cm.) above the ground - make it one of the most spectacular bulbous plants in the entire assortment. The name of this genus comes from 'ekemos' meaning 'solitary' and 'oura' meaning 'tall'. All of the several dozen species originated in Asia. Unfortunately, the Eremurus is little used in gardens. Its tuberous roots have a very strange shape; thick fleshy roots fan out in all directions from a central hub. These roots must be handled very carefully. The soil should be well-drained, so add sufficient sand to heavy clay soils. A certain amount of confusion exists surrounding 'Hippeastrum', the plant's scientific name, and 'Amaryllis', its common name. The Hippeastrum, a bulbous plant that originated in South Africa, has 4 to 6 large flowers on a hollow stem. Amaryllis belladonna is another bulbous plant from South Africa, but this plant has 6 to 12 smaller flowers on a solid flower stem. For reasons which are difficult to fathom but certainly confusing, the Hippeastrum is known almost the world-over as 'Amaryllis'. The genus, Hippeastrum is composed of several species, while Amaryllis belladonna is the only species in the genus, Amaryllis. The numerous Hippeastrum cultivars being grown were developed from hybridisation s involving several species. HIPPEASTRUM Syn. 'Amaryllis' BUTTERFLY GROUP EXOTIC STAR RED-WHITE-GREEN 60 CM. Instead, they are the products of hybridisation carried out by a Dutch plant breeding firm by the name of Tubergen. Two species playing an important role in the development of these hybrids were I. xiphium and I. lusitanic. For growing them, a rich, well-drained soil is important for success. The bulbs can be left in the ground if desired, but there is a risk of disease. The flowers are 10 cm in diameter, and the flower stalks are very sturdy - a quality which makes them quite suitable for use as cut flowers. The colour assortment is very wide and includes bicoloured varieties. Popular names: Daffodil and Jonquil Narcissi join tulips, hyacinths and crocuses to make up the most important of the spring-flowering bulbous, cormous and tuberous plants. Narcissi are used in abundance in gardens. This has much to do with their winter hardiness, the ease with which they naturalise, and their many applications. The various colours and flower types available also play a role in their popularity. The large-flowered yellow daffodils in particular are the flowers that promise that the warm spring air is on the way. The number of wild species varies widely, depending on how one defines 'wild species'. Usually this number is limited to 26 (not counting the subspecies and varieties). In addition to these, many hundreds of cultivars are known. The most important colours are yellow, white, orange-red, orange and salmon. Many cultivars display marked or subtle differences in colour between the corona (trumpet or cup) and the perianth (petals). Flowering period: February - May Planting depth to base of bulb: large bulbs: 20 cm; small bulbs: 12.5 cm Spacing between bulbs: 7.5 cm for large bulbs; 2.5 cm for small bulbs Light requirements: full sun to full shade Landscape uses: Narcissi are suitable for almost every possible application: fields, beds, containers, borders, rock gardens, as cut flowers, and for forcing. 26 20 - Page: 26 NERINE. Origin: South Africa According to popular anecdote, Nerine got its popular name, Guernsey lily, when a specimen washed up on the shores of the English Channel island of Guernsey, thus introducing the South African native to Europe. Nerine blooms as a cluster of flowers on a leafless stem. Each flower is trumpet-shaped, the petals curl backward. The difference between Nerine bowdenii and Nerine sarniensis is: Nerine bowdenii flowers at the end of the growing period ( Sept - Oct) when the foliage has almost withered; Nerine sarniensis flowers in September, flowering is followed directly by growth and foliage development. Flowering period: September - October Planting depth to base of bulbs: neck just above the soil Spacing between bulbs: 20 cm Light requirements: full sun and sheltered location (AM sun) Landscape uses: border and container, excellent cut flower.
