Then, in early August, the tall flower stems pop up, seemingly overnight, with beautiful pink lily flowers at the top.

2 Surprise Lilies Putting On A Show The Lycoris bulbs have really been putting on a show this August. In the early spring, these bulbs send up dark green strap-like foliage which soon dies back and disappears. Then, in early August, the tall flower stems pop up, seemingly overnight, with beautiful pink lily flowers at the top. Better known as surprise lilies (because of the way the flower stems pop up so quickly) or resurrection lilies (because of the way the flowers appear long after the foliage has died back) or naked ladies (because of the fact that no foliage appears with the flowers), these bulbs can easily be squeezed in among sun or shade perennials to give you a splash of color during the August doldrums. They multiply nicely, so we have dug some out of our gardens and have them available now at $4.99 for a nice double bulb. This is cheaper than the Lycoris that we buy in to sell in September, so grab these fresh dug ones while they are available. Plant a few, and you will enjoy a great surprise show next year. Lycoris HOURS: Through October 10, we will be open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and we will be closed on Sundays and on Labor Day, September 3rd.

3 Cast Iron Bench Cast Iron Benches We have really been impressed with the quality of the cast iron benches that we started carrying this spring. They are comfortable, solid and durable, coated with a rust inhibiting sealer, and will last the rest of your life. The benches also come in the form of a double glider, a chair, or a glider chair. And a side table is available. All of these items are available in various motifs. The backs of the benches and gliders are interchangeable, so we can switch the back from a bench to a glider, for example. The benches sell for $329.99, and the double gliders are $ We can order them in other motifs if we don t have what you want on hand.

Looking For Fall Color? Acer rumbrum Redpointe Naturally, when we talk about fall color, we tend to think about Maple trees. The Red Maples (Acer rubrum) are the usual go-to group.

But some of the most intense color comes from the Sugar Maples (Acer saccharum).

For smaller spaces, try Apollo, a columnar Sugar Maple with intense orange-red color, but which grows only around 25 tall and 10 wide.

4 Looking For Fall Color? Acer rumbrum Redpointe Naturally, when we talk about fall color, we tend to think about Maple trees. The Red Maples (Acer rubrum) are the usual go-to group. We especially like Redpointe for its deep red color, and October Glory because it colors up a little later, extending the color season. But some of the most intense color comes from the Sugar Maples (Acer saccharum). These would include Autumn Fest, with its firey red to orangered color, and Green Mountain, which glows with an intense orange-red. For smaller spaces, try Apollo, a columnar Sugar Maple with intense orange-red color, but which grows only around 25 tall and 10 wide. As to shrubs with fall color, we suggest Viburnum Mariesii as an excellent substitute for Burning Bushes, which are listed as an invasive species in Illinois. Mariesii is a Doublefile Viburnum with outstanding red fall color. Its distinctive, horizontal growth habit makes for a beautifully layered shrub that will grow to around 8 tall and wide in full sun or partial shade. Besides its fine fall color, it has the added bonus of lovely pure white flowers in spring. And don t forget annuals. Near the end of our typical annual season, we potted up some combination pots that we knew would be gorgeous in the fall. Consider these if you need a splash of wow this fall. And, of course, around the end of August or early September, we will have some outstanding fall mums, along with asters, pansies, and fall annuals such as ornamental kale and ornamental peppers. 5 Exciting New Diamond Lake leaf Hostas Diamond Lake Etched Glass Of course we have some new hostas! We brought these new hostas in late this spring, and they are now available. Wu-La-La ($20.00) is a variegated sport of Empress Wu. It has the same huge presence as its mother plant. The leaves have good substance, and are blue-green with apple-green to gold margins. Diamond Lake ($20.00) is an outstanding blue hosta. Although listed as a medium sized plant, it has large, heart shaped blue leaves that are thick and heavily corrugated, with wavy margins. A real stunner, Etched Glass ($20.00) is a sport of the popular Stained Glass, with wider margins and thicker substance than its parent. The wide, dark green margins surround bright yellow centers, with a light green pattern in between. The margins develop puckering as the plant matures. Nearly white flowers are very fragrant.
