RESEARCH Improvement of fruit size and quality of kiwifruit : 1. Thinning: To improve size and quality of kiwifruit and, to find out the best physiological stage and method of thinning both hand and chemical thinning were used. Hand thinning to 4 to 6 flower buds per fruiting shoots resulted in highest production of A grade fruits of better quality with maximum net benefits over unthinned control. This finding has been included in Package of Practices of the university Flower bud thinning Thinning to 4 flower buds Thinning to 6 flower buds Unthinned Stages of thinning 2.Growth regulators application:- In order to improve size, yield and quality of kiwifruit, CPPU, Promalin at different concentration were applied 14 days after full bloom as fruit dip and hydrogen cynamide at 45 days before expected bud break as spray. The results revealed that dipping of fruits in 5 ppm CPPU produced 25 to 30 per cent bigger size fruits and gave 20 per cent higher yield as compared to control. This finding has been recommended to the farmers for commercial use in kiwifruit orchards. Effect of Promalin on fruit size Fruit size in 5 ppm CPPU dipped fruits C. Fertigation in Kiwifruit orchard:- The comparative performance of fertigation and traditional soil fertilization were studied in kiwifruit orchard. The results reveled that fertigation with 3/4 th of recommended dose of NPK gave 9 to 13 per cent higher yield of better quality fruits with higher fertilizer use efficiency and 25 per cent saving of fertilizer as compared to soil fertilization.
Fertigation in Kiwifruit Proportion of different grade fruits D. Orchard Floor management :- Various orchard floor management systems were evaluated in kiwifruit orchard. Grass mulch in combination with post emergence weedicide and black plastic mulch were found most effective in improving yield (36 %) of better quality fruits, If provides better weed management and in situ soil moisture conservation as compared to traditional clean cultivation. Black polythene mulch Grass mulch
Irrigation in Kiwifruit:- Comparative performance of drip irrigation and traditional basin irrigation were studied in kiwifruit. Drip irrigation at 100 % ETc increased yield by 20 per cent, improved fruit quality and saved 32% of irrigation water over basin method of irrigation.
2. Propagation of Walnut and Pecan nut: Steps in performing chip budding Bud take success in Chip budding (95 per cent) 3. Effect of drip irrigation on growth, yield and fruit quality of strawberry cv. Chandler Drip irrigation at 120% ETc significantly increased growth, yield and quality of strawberry fruits as compared to furrow irrigation with V volume of water, yet was at par with drip irrigation at 100% ETc in these growth, yield and quality parameters. Drip irrigation at 100% ETc registered 18 per cent increase in plant height and 30 per cent increase in yield over furrow irrigation with V volume of water and also resulted per cent saving of irrigation water with higher water use efficiency than 120% ETc drip irrigation. Fruit size under drip irrigation at 1000 % Etc Fruit size under conventional furrow irrigation 4. Establishment of bud wood bank of fruit crops (A) Walnut: Under the Mini mission project budwood bank of walnut has been established by planting some of exotic cultivars namely Lara, Hartley, Meylannaise, Ronde De Montignel, Mayettee and Franquette and some local selection like Kashmir budded, Wilson Wonder, Govind, Pratap, Kn-5, Kn-9, Sh-23 and Sr-11 at main campus and farmers field
(B). Apple and Peach: Mother orchards of some promising and commercial cultivars of apple (Red Chief, Super Chief, Oregon Spur-II, Vance Delicious, Top Red, Gale Gala and Scarlet Gala) and peach and nectarine (Red Heaven, July Elberta, Silver King, Snow Queen and May Fire) have been established at Department of Fruit Science. Mother tree orchard of spur type and colour strains of Apple Mother tree orchard of peach and Nectarine
4. Establishment of mother stools of clonal rootstocks (A). Apple and Cherry: About 4500 stool beds of clonal rootstocks of apple viz. EMLA 111, Merton 793, EMLA 7, EMLA 106 and 300 stools of Cherry have been established in main campus. Merton 793 EMLA 111 Colt 5. Nursery production of Temperate Fruits: Nursery production of different temperate fruits has been a major component during period under report. The major emphasis was given to mass multiplication of quality nursery plants of promising varieties of apple, pear, stone fruits, kiwifruit, strawberry and nut crops and clonal rootstocks of apple and cherry. About 54 Lakhs grafted plants of temperate fruits were produced and an income of Rs. 80 Lakhs has been generated from the sale of nursery plants during this period of report. Apple Peach Kiwifruit

Success Storey: Generally it takes 2 to 3 years to produce grafted/ budded plants of apple, however under poly house with chip budding in July the apple nursery plants were produced in one year. Preparation of beds Sowing of seed in January Chip budding in July Chip budded plants
