3 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 3 THE AMELANCHIERS A very useful group of ornamental flowering trees. Well over thirty common (nonscientific) names apply. Among them are Sarvistree, Serviceberry, Shadblow, Juneberry, Downy Shadblow, Sugar Plum, May Cherry, Lancewood trees, etc. Amelanchier can be planted as a specimen tree, either as a clump, or single stem standing alone in any choice lawn area. They often are used to frame a home or building, by planting them at the corners, either front or rear, or at an offset with a complimentary basal planting. In very early Spring before any leaves appear on itself or surrounding trees, Sarvistrees burst into flower. Almost every small sprig and branch appear covered with attractive, dainty, white blossoms. Sarvistrees can be observed in full flower in woodland areas all around Ohio, and give us the first breath of Spring in early April. Flowers are not subject to winter kill or frosts, or freeze damage, they are self-pollinating. Both male and female flowers are borne on the same tree. Fruits botanically are not berries, they are pomes or little apples. Since they are small, however, they often are called berries. Sarvistree berries bear every year, begin ripening by the end of June (hence the name Juneberry) and by early July become reddishmaroon in color, are about one quarter to one half inch in diameter, and cause the branches to bend because of their weight. Sarvistree fruits are recognized as a favorite food for just eating right off the tree, are delicious fresh frozen, or in pies, tarts, puddings, or in muffins. The native American Indians used the Amelanchier (they called them Lancewood trees) as one of their favorite edible fruits. The fruits were harvested by the women, and were eaten fresh or dried and mixed with dried meats of several kinds (primarily buffalo) and made into a loaf (like meatloaf) and were dried and kept into the winter. They called this 'parmesion'. The Raymond Nelson Nursery prior to 1976, showed the following food analysis of Sarvisberries: Thiamine B-1 content, 8.16 mcg per 100 grams. (Fluorimetric Assay): Vitamin C content, mg per 100 grams (Idometric Assay). This means that the Vitamin C content is the highest listed on tree charts, even surpassing citrus fruits. This is probably why over 50 species of birds are attracted to eating of this fruit in June. The little pomes of the Sarvistree are the first fruits to ripen and this nourishment is an attraction, just when the birds are busy nesting and rearing their young. The National Audobon Society recommends the planting of fruit producing trees, such as the Sarvistree to attract birds. The wood of the Sarvistree is the heaviest wood that grows in the United States outside the tropics and is equalled only by one other tree. It weighs dry 53 pounds per cubic foot. Its strength is outstanding. Its wood was used for the making of battle lances, and it was occasionally referred to as lancewood. It takes a beautiful polish. Wood technologists list the Sarvistree among the top American trees in their technical ratings of modulus of rupture, resistance to indentation and resistance to longitudinal pressure. Sarviswood is the fifth hardest wood that grows in the United States. In resistance to breakage by ice, snow, or winds, the Sarvistree will stand unbroken long after other trees have gone down.

4 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 4 Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk', PACIFIC SERVICEBERRY (10' tall) A clump form shrub with erect stems, growing only to 10' or so. Flowers are white, are 3/4" to 1.25" wide, appearing in erect racemes. Fruit is purplish-black, juicy and edible. Birds eat this variety last. Fruits are persistent. Zone 2-5. Quan. These tasty fruits contain more Vitamin C than any other fruits available in the United State.

5 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 5 Amelanchier arborea, DOWNY SERVICEBERRY (15-25') Generally referred to as the tree form of Amelanchier canadensis. Leaves open grayish, tomentose, densely wooly, with soft matted hairs when emerging, and change to a medium green in summer. Fall color varies from yellow to apricot-orange, with a tinge towards either deep red or lighter yellow. Some describe its color as an exquisite soft red. Some landscape architects recommend its planting simply because of the beauty of their autumn foliage. CULTURE: Will grow almost anywhere, but prefers an acid soil. ph 4.0 to 8.0. 6 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 6 Amelanchier canadensis, SHADBLOW SERVICEBERRY (15' in 20 years) Also called Downy Shadblow or Juneberry. The first ornamental tree to flower in early Spring. Precedes Acer rubrum about two weeks. When nothing else is in leaf or flower, there are the Amelanchiers, showing their racemes of small white flowers quite abundantly. Flowers are followed by grayish-green slender leaves opening 7-14 days after flowers. A see-through openly branched ornamental tree of considerable merit. Light gray-green summer foliage turns predominantly yellow with blushes of red in mid October. Medium gray bark attractively presents an informal appearance in Winter. Slow growing, a 20' tree would be about 30 years old. Prefers to grow tree form, but clumps develop by cutting back when young. Most clump forms are sold in the nursery trade are actually crossed with Amelanchier laevis and grandiflora. June bearing, maroon-purple fruit is edible. Fruits are 2/5" long, are black to maroon-purple, juicy, and are a favorite, and considered to be highly flavored and nourishing. Flavor is a cross between a plum and a blueberry, very tasty! CULTURE: Prefers ph of 4.0 to 6.5, but tolerates soils to 8.0. Sun or partial shade. Zone 4. Quan. Found on Gilligan s Island in Red Pine Lake on the Nemagazenda River. This windy island undergoes -40 to -60 degrees F. This selection is suspected to be of Amelanchier canadensis and Amelanchier floridus origin. Very fuzzy buds in early Spring. A good bloomer with excellent fruits. A Brian Wade selection! We've been growing this very narrow, upright species for nearly fifteen years now. It is very hardy and has withstood our cold temperatures here very well. We have noted in growing this one, that it is very stoloniferous and new erect shoots emerge readily. We almost called it 'Fuzzy Buds', because the flower buds in January and February are almost like pussy willow fuzzy buds, except they are more pointed than on the Pussy Willows " Liners (Bare Root) " Liners (Container) " Light Grade (Container) Amelanchier canadensis 'Prince William', PRINCE WILLIAM SERVICEBERRY (8-10' tall x 8-10' spread in 20 years) A very compact, slow growing cultivar with suckers. Noted for its large flowers and fruit. Each pure white blossom measures nearly one inch across. Fruits are deliciously sweet, deep purple and 1/2" in diameter. Orange-red fall foliage color. Our plants seem to be very dwarf and slow to mature. Tends to be a narrower clump as a shrub. New growth tinged red and becomes glossy green. 12 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 12 Amelanchier x grandiflora Cumulus, CUMULUS SERVICEBERRY (25' tall x 15' wide in years) Plant patent #3092. A very lovely small ornamental tree or shrub. Flowers are pure white, appear before the leaves in very early Spring. Amelanchiers are the first of all ornamental trees to bloom here. This variety usually grows into a small specimen tree rather than multi-stem as some other Amelanchiers do. Grows usually upright and has an open form of growth. Fruits are excellent to eat in June. They are blueberry type berries and can be eaten right off the tree (that is if you can beat the robins to them). Fall color is an excellent orange-red. Culture: Prefers well drained moist soils. ph 5.0 to 6.0. Sun or partial shade. Zone 4. We have been growing this variety since 1977 and find them very distinctive with their narrow, upright growth form. Most are all tree form. The third member of the new Royal Family of Amelanchiers. Princess Diana is a graceful small, multi-stemmed or tree form tree with spectacular early and long lasting fall color. Fruits are 3/8" diameter. Flowers early before leaves appear in cluster. This variety grows into a small tree and is said to mature at about 18-20' and 15' wide. It is white flowering, reddish maroon fruits in June, and is distinguished primarily because of its excellent reddish fall foliage color. 16 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 16 Amelanchier laevis, ALLEGHENY SERVICEBERRY (15' in years) (40' in 90 years) The most common Amelanchier native to Ohio today, and the most widely grown and sold species in the nursery trade. You will find this variety covered with thousands of dainty white blossoms here in our woodlands, and dotted around our homes here in early April. With the planting of this tree on a choice location as a specimen, small ornamental shade tree, or as a framework tree close by a home or residence, it will challenge the knowledge of those who observe bird identification, as they partake of its excellent June bearing, blueblack to maroon-red fruit. Identification features that separate it from other varieties are that the leaves unfold with a tinge of red, and are slightly glabrous (wooly), as opposed to Amelanchier canadensis, that are only grayish-green and very wooly. Light gray winter bark coloring is attractive. Considered to be an outstanding selection for semi-shaded areas, where an irregular, non-formal, slender branched, strongly ice and snow resistant against breakage, ornamental tree is required. A member of the Royal Family of Amelanchiers selected from Amelanchier laevis seedlings by Dr. Ed Hasselkus and Mr. Watson at the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and patented in This Serviceberry grows in shade or partial shade as an understory tree. The small tree probably grows 25 to 30 feet tall and spreads 15 to 20 feet. Multiple stems are upright and highly branched forming a dense shrub, or if properly pruned a small tree. The tree is short-lived, has a rapid growth rate, and can be used as a filler plant or to attract birds. The main ornamental feature is the white flowers borne in drooping clusters in mid spring before leaf emergence. The purplish-black edible berries are sweet and juicy but are soon eaten by birds. The fall color is orange-red. It is well-adapted for planting beneath power lines. ***** LIMITED AVAILABILITY - PLEASE CHECK FOR CURRENT AVAILABILITY" ***** "BIRDS AND AMELANCHIERS" The National Audobon Society recommends the planting of fruit producing trees such as the Amelanchiers. 20 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 20 THANKSGIVING DAY BREAKFAST TREAT Freeze fresh Juneberries without adding sugar. First wash Juneberries well, drain, then freeze just as they are. Take out, thaw, and make your muffins or Juneberry Pies! JUNEBERRY MUFFINS 1 Cup Fresh Juneberries 2 Cups Sifted Flour 1/3 Cup Sugar (for batter) 1 teaspoon salt 3 teaspoon baking powder 1 Cup Milk 4 tablespoons butter (melted) 1 tablespoon sugar (for topping) 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 2 fresh eggs The fruit should be washed and dried on paper towels. Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl; combine eggs, milk, and butter into a two-cup measure; add all at once to the flour mixture. Stir lightly just until batter is mixed (light handling is one of the secrets of fluffiness). Add berries while a bit of flour still shows; fold in gently, only a few strokes, with a fork. Spoon batter into greased muffin pan cups; filling each only about 2/3 full. Sprinkle with a mixture of 1 tablespoon sugar and lemon rind or honey. Bake in 425 degree oven 20 minutes or until golden brown. JUNEBERRY PIE 11/2 Cups Sugar 1/3 Cup Flour 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 4 Cups Juneberries 11/2 tablespoons butter Usual directions are the same as for most other fresh berry pies. Bake in 425 degree oven for 10 minutes, then bake an additional 35 minutes at 350 degrees, or until crust is brown and juice bubbles through the slits in the top of the crust. Note: The fruits of all Amelanchiers are called Juneberries and can be picked in early June! If you can beat the birds to them!
