Today we would like to invite you to participate in our 2-night tour of Barcelona s "Spanish Food, Wine and Architecture prior to your 2012 Pahlmeyer Wine Cruise. We always encourage our guests traveling to Europe for a cruise to arrive a day or two in advance as this gives you time to rest and enjoy the region, and flight delays are always possible. So by joining us in Barcelona, you won't risk "missing the boat"! You'll stay at Barcelona's Hotel Colón, a beautiful and historic 4-star hotel located in the Gothic Quarter, enjoy a fun and tasty walking tapas tour, a wine excursion to the Penedés appellation, and a visit to Gaudi's Casa Batlló and the Picasso Museum. When all of that is said and done, we'll even give you a ride to the pier to board the ship on embarkation day. Attached to this is a detailed description of the Food &Wine Trails pre-cruise Barcelona package, photos of the hotel and rooms, and a Registration Form for you to complete and return with your payment. 2 PRE CRUISE BARCELONA PACKAGE Spanish Food, Wine and Architecture Discover Catalonian Cuisine and the Wines of Penedés PORT: Barcelona, Spain ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium walking over uneven surfaces for extended periods of time Barcelona has become Europe s most popular city for good reason. Nowhere else can you find such beauty, vitality and sophistication PLUS a world class wine region within an easy drive. The city is made for walking and offers great restaurants, tapas and wine bars mixed into medieval and trendy neighborhoods. We ll spend two nights in the Four Star Hotel Colón, conveniently located in the historic Gothic Quarter and an easy walk to Europe s best, enclosed food market, the Cathedral and Spain s most famous promenade, Las Ramblas. Designed to acquaint or reacquaint you with this beautiful city, this two night pre cruise package gives you Barcelona at its best including a visit to the beautiful Penedés wine region. Day 1 Independent Arrival in Barcelona [D] Highlight: Walking Tapas Tour Guests will arrive in Barcelona independently and transfer from the airport on their own to the hotel. Your knowledgeable. English speaking guide will spend the next two and a half hours introducing the group to the local cuisine that welcomes the new while celebrating the old tapas! It has been said that Spain owes much of its status as a mecca of progressive cuisine to these small plate dishes, as Spaniards will try anything once as long as it s small! You ll walk through the Gothic Quarter to Las Ramblas on a tapeo, the tapas bar crawl that will have the group walking, talking, drinking, and nibbling the night away. At each stop there will be a glass of wine and one of the famous small plates awaiting you. The tour ends back at the Hotel Colón, where you can retire for the night or continue along with your newfound friends. Day 2 Penedés and Pares Balta Winery [B, L] Highlight: Terroir Tour, Winery Tour, Wine Tasting, and Wine Paired Lunch Buffet breakfast is included this morning in the hotel restaurant. You ll meet your guide in the hotel lobby and depart for the Penedés wine region. This 200 year old Pares Balta winery is a recent discovery of F&WT and one we re excited to share. Three generations have overseen the vineyards and winemaking operations, always respecting tradition but also bringing new and fresh ideas to the winery. Parker s Wine Advocate describes Pares Balta as having serious aspirations in their efforts for producing world class wines. An organic winery, Pares Balta grows 18 different grape varietals (12 red and 6 white) and makes 25 different types of wine.

3 Upon arrival you will be greeted by a family member and then transported in one of their four wheel drive vehicles for a tour of their vineyards and spacious estate. The tour ends on a ridge top affording a wonderful view of the valley below and the Mediterranean Sea shining in the distance. Following that, you will enjoy a tasting of four of their wines then a leisurely three course wine paired Catalan lunch, which, (per local custom), won t begin until 1:30pm, so be sure to enjoy a good breakfast! Return to Barcelona in the late afternoon and spend the rest of the day with dinner at your leisure. Day 3 Barcelona City Tour / Embarkation [B] Highlight: Gaudi s Casa Batlló and the Picasso Museum Buffet breakfast is included this morning in the hotel restaurant. Gaudi s Casa Batlló You will check out of the hotel and meet the group in the lobby with your luggage for an early departure. Our four hour city tour of Barcelona will take us to Casa Batlló, one of the two great buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi's work is admired by architects around the world as being one of the most unique and distinctive architectural styles. His work has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona architecture with examples throughout the city. This building that Gaudi designed for Josep Batlló, a wealthy aristocrat, is a stunning example of his work and well worth the visit. You ll continue your tour with a visit to the Picasso Museum, home to the more than 3,800 works that make up the museum's permanent collection. Thanks to the wishes of Picasso, Barcelona now has the youthful work of one of the twentieth century s most significant artists. The museum is rich in work from the training periods in his life; we could say that it is practically exhaustive up to the Blue Period, of which the museum has a priceless group of works. The museum also houses an important representation of works from 1917, and the series, Las Meninas (1957) and a very large Picasso prints collection.
